There seems to be a lot of optimism around the type of player we will get with pick 6.

For reference I've listed the last 17 players picked at 6.

North Melbourne Dylan Smith
Port Adelaide Steven Salopek
Essendon Kepler Bradley
Western Bulldogs Tom Williams
Hawthorn Beau Dowler
Hawthorn Mitchell Thorp
Essendon David Myers
Carlton Christopher Yarran
Sydney Gary Rohan
Richmond Reece Conca
Port Adelaide Chad Wingard
Western Bulldogs Jackson Macrae
Collingwood Matthew Scharenberg
GWS Caleb Marchbank
Essendon Aaron Francis
Carlton Sam Petrevski-Seton

RE Lever: What if we downgraded 6 + 36 to 12 and 18 from Brisbane and used 12 and 18 on Lever?
RE Saad: We need to get this guy!!! Check out the below video.

I wouldn't even do that, would much rather take 12 and 18 to the draft then use them on a position we already have well covered.

This I find interesting. McLarty you have possibly pegged for a KPD spot but a 195 cm gun doesn't fill a position of need.
Hopefully McLarty comes on and fills that role, time will tell but he's shown some promise given his interrupted preseason. One thing we'll know for certain is that he didn't cost us an arm and leg in terms of trade or salary.

Huh?
I said IF we think McLarty can fill that more 1:1 KPD role then I am more happy to overpay for Lever. That way even if Lever doesnt develop those skills, we still have a quality KPD to fill that role.
If Mclarty doesnt come along, and Lever doesnt develop those 1:1 skills (which he has yet to show) - then we will have the same problem for the next few years: still looking for a quality 1:1 defender who is not a liability disposing of the ball.

Im not particularly interested in height or weight numbers - what is much more relevant is how the guy plays. And right now, Lever IS NOT a KPD - so stop calling him that. He currently plays as a 3rd tall - in the intercepting, attacking role - basically the role that Howe plays for us.
He has the potential to be a great KPD - but if doesnt develop that 1:1 skillset (which so far he had been very much exposed to be lacking) then he is not enough of an improvement to our side to consider the current asking price.

Probably because McLarty is being developed as a..... wait for it.... KPD. And when he debuts he’ll likely play as... wait for it..... a KPD!

Apparently all that’s required to be a KPP is height though.

So we can Draft anyone off the Street that is 195cm or taller then?

I remember pick 6 being labelled as a curse pick for a long time. I remember them saying Wingard broke it. Out of that list i would take in our side right now Wingard, Macrae, Marchbank and SPS. All them players looking the goods, so recent success rate is decent!

Adelaide need midfielders.
Throw up Broomhead and Aish in a swap for Lever and maybe a late pick.
They are surplus midfielders in my view, especially as JDG and Maynard will now spend more time there.
They are both SA boys.

Could do worse.
They need gun midfielders not more depth guys.

I never really get this argument. Outside of the first 5 picks at 6 you have the pick of the draft. Put up something like picks 6-30 of the last 10 years and you'll get a better idea of what's possible if our recruiters identify the right talent.

I can't see the value in a trade strategy that gives up pick 6 for anyone that is available. As so many have rightly said, we have a lot of fairly tall intercepting backs. I can't see the point in pursuing Lever.
Getting another pick high enough to collect Richards seems like a good idea.
Since we have to lose 3, and only White has gone, the delistings matter, and could indicate where the thinking is going at the club. Or they may just show who has exhausted the club's patience.
On playing ability, Stringer has to be worth a look, but we don't have much to trade.
The same could be said of Saad.
Likewise Watts.

Yeah I get the impression we are very much a 'wait and see' when it comes to our delistings. Probably going to shop a few around, or see what we get, before we actually commit to delisting a player.
Which is what we should have done last year. That pick 100 for Marley still smarts.

I asked what KP defenders at his age had comparable numbers. Scodog rattled off a bunch that hadn't played at all at his age or hadn't played the post of Key Position. Sorry it didn't work out for you but you need to do your research first.

The point I've been making is that he's 21 and still to fill out so why would you negatively compare him to other KP defenders who didn't perform the same role at his age or weren't even playing!? He has an awesome arsenal already and when he fills out - like the rest that you raised - he'll play more one-on-one, if required.

The other factor is that his decision making and value is wasted as a lock down player. You haven't managed to comprehend that fact.
Look I was just after a decent football discussion with you for a change not one where neither of us twists the others words based on minute technicalities.

Overall I rate Lever and think he'll be a great get for almost all clubs at the price Adelaide will seek just not Collingwood. He'll get to the Dees and I'm glad I was able to clarify your stance on facts :thumbsu:

Apparently all that’s required to be a KPP is height though.
KPPs need height, ability to read the ball in the air, ability to read the play, willingness to attack the ball in the air, awareness of other bodies in a marking contest, strength, endurance, clean skills. Lever has all bases covered to a high degree - except strength. The strength will come.
