I don't mind Watts as a player. On his day he is very effective. Beautiful kick etc. But...How many chances has he had to pull his finger out at Melbourne? He comes across to me as someone who is just going to drift through his career without giving it his absolute best crack. Clearly Melbourne think that this is the case. If he came to Collingwood, I would hope that its with a deep fire burning in his belly to prove everyone wrong, but I honestly doubt that he would.
The ball bounces out to the wing...
Player I want at Collingwood:
Runs after it thinking "This ball is mine. No prick better get in my way or I'm gonna knock the colours right off their guernsey!"
Watts:
Runs after it thinking "ooh I hope it bounces my way so I can use my elite skills and pass it 15m to someone in a similar position. Maybe I can bounce it too in between?"
He's not what we want and he's trolling you. I think/hope
Pick 54 is the most I'd be offering

It's really unusual how stinging the Bulldogs and Dees have been in letting the footy world know they want to move Stringer and Watts on. What will annoy me though is when they want overs for them despite their comments suggesting they should go cheap.

Seriously the thought of a 27 yo Watts & a 30 yo Crameri which would cost us close to one million a year in salary cap, literally make me sick in the stomach .... and a firm Pie member !

On iPhone using BigFooty.com mobile app
If and thats a BIG if they bring in crameri itll be on mimimum coin or very close to it.

I'm a bit confused about the criticism that seems to be about of us not hitting the draft. We did exactly that when we traded out some of Mick's boys.

We then had a defection which needed a replacement ready made elite player (bringing in Treloar for Beams). This is the only deal that has cost us a first round selection.

Some other moves we made were to preserve the age profile of an already young list (Varcoe for Harry, White for Dawes). We lost a lot of experience and needed to replenish with some unless we wanted to completely fall off a cliff, we were bottom 3-4 in terms of age profile for a couple of years. Some would argue we should have done that and tanked like a Carlton. I don't think so. We had a core group that when fit and ready could make the 8. Unfortunately we had a couple of years of serious injury. And then the major disaster which set our mini rebuild back a few years: the Scharenberg and Freeman injuries.

I see very few failed deals here (maybe Aish the only recent one?). I won't talk free agents for now as I think they're in a different category, but that to me is an extraordinarily good strike rate.

I think it's unfair to criticise the club simply for bringing players in from other teams, not actually critiquing the deals themselves. The game has changed with the explosion of player movement and no one only goes via the draft anymore. Not only because they are chasing other team's players but because their own are constantly on the move as well. If you're not looking to improve your team at the trade table then you're probably being left behind. There are different phases to a build, but it's no longer as simple as draft, draft, draft, top up when ready to compete.

The Watts one I can understand. He's contracted and wants to stay. They obviously want him out so are trying to burn their bridges.

I'd thought the Bulldogs had been a bit quieter officially. The media have wrecked Jake's value anyway, so no point in being quiet anymore.

Trying to burn their bridges with a player that wants to stay . Do it privately it paints your club as assholes and shows ypyr desperation to the market ypur trying to sell to.

The way I see our biggest list deficiencies.

Quick, linebacking half back: There is nobody on the list who is close to good enough, either for the now or for the future. Priority recruitment.

Key position forward: We don't have a top key position forward on our list. If we are to bring one in via trade or FA, he must be top quality now or at least have high draft pedigree from a recent draft (think Lynch or a Patton/Schache type).

Moore is a great prospect, but is still developing. Cox is a long shot but is developing ok (although I think he's a great prospect as a ruckman). Priority draft recruitment.

Key position back: We don't have a top key position back on our list, although Dunn is doing a decent job for now. Reid is a great player but is defensively suspect these days. He is more of a tall quarter back then a key position defender and in my opinion this was always his best role. If we are to bring one in via trade or FA, he must be top quality now or at least have high draft pedigree from a recent draft. Lever would be an excellent get but seems to be Demons bound. There aren't really any other viable options being spoken about currently.

We drafted McLarty last season with our top pick, although we don't know anything about him at senior level. Not a priority draft recruitment, but another developing key back would be handy if one is available at one of our picks.

Third tall forward with good skills: Fasolo and Elliott play taller than they are and are quality players, but we don't have a quality genuine third tall on the list who can provide that vital selection mismatch (except for Howe who is our best backman and needs to stay there). Watts seems to be earmarked for this role and would be a good get as he would really help to round out our forward line. WHE is a great prospect for this type of role.

Outside midfielder with pace and good kicking skills: Wells is elite when fit, but he rarely is. We don't have any others who are excellent in the role currently, although Varcoe can do a job and WHE could potentially develop into the role.

This is not a trade or free agency priority for this season, but if we rate someone who fits this profile in the draft pool we should pounce. This type of player is a risky draft choice in my opinion and we should avoid with pick 6 unless an absolute diamond is available, as many of this type of prospect don't fulfill their talent. Even at the very top end of the draft.

You'd think in footy circles that people probably already knew about their off field issues. But you're right, it's strange to air it publicly.

Crameri is not an age bracket we should be looking at. Pairing him with Moore? Are they serious? He's another Fas, Elliott size/type player. Are we going to spend 2018 trying to copy Richmond like we spent 2017 trying to copy Dogs?

Watts is practically identical to Dan Aykryod from Trading Places

Watts was the number one pick and the golden child for nearly a decade at Melbourne. All of a sudden the Dukes brothers (I would imagine exactly like the Melbourne board) have made a bet that a less fortunate player may perform better than him and now he is out on the street.

Watts will be feeling down in the dumps and life will be tough although he will get to look at Jaimie Lee Curtis’s boobies. But after that this will happen at the Melbourne best and fairest.

Then later Watts will have received his wake up call and lucky enough to be given another chance at Collingwood. Now he won’t be the golden child but just a bloke who has been given another chance at a club. He will be scared and nervous and wanting to try harder than ever to fit in. Unfortunately this will mean that at Halloween he will deeply offend Harry O.

But then in 2018 once it is business time again, Watts may realise that this change was what he needed to finally live up to what he is capable of. And just like Heath Shaw, being TRADED TO PLACES may be the kick that finally gives him what he needs to have a strong career at another club and make Melbourne wish they never let him go

Nice, your point re elliot and fasolo is a good one i think another priority is an actual crumbimg small forward the best we from a crumbing perspective is sidebottom, hopefully daicos comes on and does so quickly

Funny how Bulldogs wouldn’t give us anything better than pick 76 for Cloke, a player we didn’t want. Yet they expect a lot for Stringer, a player they don’t want.

I agree that Sidebottom would be excellent in the crumbing forward role and I've always thought we should move him there. Unfortunately the coaches have had other ideas.

Kirby might be another who could develop in the role over time, but it would be a good idea to get another prospect in with a later/rookie pick. I think this is the type of player where you can get genuine quality further down the draft.

Not sure on watts. If the pick is our fourth ok with it, but before that no.
Crameri unless it's on base wages and pick 100+ no thanks.
Still rather go to the draft, unless for saad
