LOL....It is probably my mate. I commented on here last night that my mate knows him well. Shiel will probably come back to Melbourne this year but he is not so keen to go to Carlton. Money isn't the overriding issue with him.....playing with his mates and playing in a team to contend for a premiership is, hence why he is taking unders at GWS.
Imagine if all of Carlton's entire GWS dumpster fire recruiting drive was orchestrated in hope that Shiel might come and play and with his friends. Only for it to be dashed when he chooses the cool kids.

What is with all these players wanting to play with their friends. What are we. In grade 5.
It shows there mentality.
Not necessarily a criticism, but there's a bit of Neverland about the AFL. Populated by a relatively high proportion of manboys. On the flipside they are high achieving athletes with the ability to focus and work hard, so good luck to them I guess.

There are no other teams.
I'd like to think so but his best mate since he was 12-13 has been Devon Smith. He is selling the idea of the Bombers big time
They have room in the cap too, courtesy of the AFL turning a blind eye to a certain court decision.

Young has the height (197cm), is a good athlete and is a high level intercept mark who walked into the Dogs side with 21 disposals and 9 marks followed by 16 disposals and 10 marks as one of if not the youngest player taken in his draft in 2016. He has had x2 13 mark and a 10 mark game in the VFL this year, and he's not even 20-years old yet. So he's one if he can be pried free could develop into a monster.

If North don't want Thompson I'd jump at the opportunity to sign him. He secured 322 disposals and 120 marks from 21 games (still durable and still productive) and importantly in 1v1 contests is still very capable. I don't have his 1v1 numbers for this year, but last year he was ranked second of the top 25 1v1 defenders. He's still a clear best 15 key defender in the competition for mine.
Out of curiosity, where do you find those 1 vs 1 stats? I'm curious to see how May stacks up and a few other guys. Just quietly reckon Appleby would be pretty good with that stat for such an inexperienced player.

I agree and think we should be promoting this guy into the team. I am still a little perplexed as to why he was moved forward in the first place. His best junior footy was as a back and his form at the end of last year there was terrific. I just wonder whether it was done bc we had Moore moving back there and then a heap of options like Goldsack, Dunn, Howe etc so it was decided to move him forward. If Moore were to go then I wonder if we would move him back. Does my head in a bit!

Pie 4 Life do you have a view?
I reckon there were two factors at play in McLarty's move forward. One, as you mention, was Moores move back created a void forward. I also reckon they wanted to see what he could do forward. If he did well then that's a big list need filled potentially. If he didn't they could always shift him back again having broadened his development.

The thing that has played against McLarty's selection is a combination of bad luck and a strict selection policy. This year we have consistently brought players into the side to play roles they have been doing at VFL level. We haven't seen players brought up from the VFL into a different AFL role. Even Mihocek had split his time forward and back at VFL level. I reckon, and i'm guessing here, that this selection approach came out of the review as it is different from past seasons.

When a forward role finally presented itself with Reids injury; McLarty had at the same time hurt his ankle. Mihocek was selected and cemented his spot. He never looked back.

I don't think it's a lack of faith from the coaches; just a combination of bad luck, bad timing and a change in selection policy.

I'd be switching McLarty back next season because that is where his best footy has been played. If we don't trade in any ready made key position players I would earmark him in preseason for Dunns role. Until Dunn makes it back. See what he can do.

In the case of Thompson, took it straight out of this years AFL prospectus.

I don't have any Champion Data AFL stats or anything like that.

May was top 15% of all defenders I think the numbers were. So he's obviously high end 1v1.

When it comes to McLarty playing forward/ruck this year, the elephant in the room is our complete and utter lack of ruck depth. If, heaven forbid, Grundy got injured, Cox is our only genuine 1st ruck option and he's not got the tank to play high numbers of minutes in the ruck. We'd need a bloke who can compete in the air and bring the ball to ground to cover Cox's tall forward role, whilst Cox is rucking. The same guy needs to also be able to spend a fair bit of time in the ruck. Moore and McLarty are the only two options on our list and with Moore unable to get on the park and also earmarked for a permanent spot in defence, we need McLarty to be ready to step up in case of emergency. Grundy's health is why he hasn't got a game this year.

Well the rumour on the Swans board at least is that the Swans didn't make a sizable offer, and that it was Moore that has sought the Swans out because he is desperate to move to Sydney, not the club, but the city.
Yeah I don't think that's new. Their reasoning was that they believe he could only live in Sydney because of his "personal preferences" (read between the lines).

Assuming that's true, is Melbourne such a bad place to be if you're so inclined? I wouldn't have thought so.

God I hate having to dance around subjects like this. The AFL is such a juvenile industry in so many ways and perhaps that's a part of the issue for him.

I agree. It's a rediculous reason. The people that usually say it are from Sydney. It suggests most of them have no idea what the rest of Australia is like. They're pretty insular up there.

Melbourne is generally regarded as being Australia's most progressive city, so not sure why they think a move would be necessary.

I like to read other teams trade threads to get a feel for where other supporters feel their list is at, sometimes there is a little bit of inside info.

But i tell ya what, i think i got Aids reading some of the Tigers threads.

My favourite, Pick 23 and Shai Bolton should get it done for Adam Cerra if he wants to come home.

I know our supporters have thrown up some outrageous trade scenarios, but this is up there..
