Kane I disagree here.

Hart is gone so the only tallish flankers we have left are Jericho, Massie, Torney and Mattner. We are in desperate need of tallish flankers/utilities since we only have 4 of them and one of them is nearing 30.

Playfair is an interesting one. When you look at it, we only have 1 proven depth player as a KPP next year and thats probably Stevens. Gibson and Obst are other KPP on the list and they are miles off.

We need to recruit a KPP either through trade or draft. Playfair is tall enough to pinch hit in the ruck if needed. He is not overly great mark and a very dodgy kick. If we do get him it would be for depth purposes only. With pick 14 in the draft, I very much doubt we will be able to draft a KPP that is physically ready for the AFL.

I can see why we would be interested in Playfair but I was kind of hoping we would be aiming a bit higher than that. Someone like Polak perhaps or even McDougall.
Stiffy, but Jerry doesn't play tall as a flanker. He is best suited as a running HBF & we have oodles of them.

His marking reminds me a bit of Bryan Beinke. Remember that season when Beinke was the only player who had more contested marks that uncontested? Beinke could take a grab, he just didn't do it often enough (and got injured every 5 seconds).

I think Playfair can pull down a grab in a pack ok, he just goes missing for large periods of games and is capable of kicking out on the full from anywhere on the field.

Agree that MacDougall would be a better prospect.

I agree that Polak is probably a step or 2 ahead of Playfair and McDougall. However, from what I've seen, I don't rate McDougall as necessarily better than Playfair.

Both are about the same shape and size (bloody tall and bloody gangly), both are awkward and both are very inconsistent. Their game stats are also scaringly similar. They are also the same age: 23.

I'd say the Cats would want less for Playfair than West Coast wants for McDougall. So which we way do we go?

Neither way. They're both hacks. i would rather keep the pick and punt on a kid.

I would still go McDougall without a hint of hesitation.

McDougall has shown in flashes that he is a capable goal kicker.

I would prefer McDougall but I can see why AFC would be interested in Playfair its just that I am not particularly keen on him. Then again, I strongly believe that we have one of the best training programs in the AFL and he could improve with us. I don't think we are looking at him as our saviour but a decent back up player.

Kane, Jezza is 190 cm and he has teh ability to play on a tall. He has the height, spring and pace to play that sort of game.

People make a mistake of thinking that Jericho is a finished product and cannot improve. That cannot be furthest from the truth. He is still extremely rough around the edges but the potential and ability are there. Good judges in the AFL can see that and its the reason why clubs are prepared to take a punt. Now its not guaranteed that he will make it but he has the ability to make it.

Players need to keep developing and some develop pretty quickly (see Van Berlo) and others take a while longer but still turn into good players (see Doughty). It doesn't mean that the later is a hack, it just means he needs a bit more time to get there.

In 2005 Playfair was top 5 in the league for marks and contested marks until round 11 (he broke his jaw). Bomber Thompson said he was our most important player structurally at that stage and he probably was. Many would have rated him ahead of Henschel at that stage (not even close now).

Has never really recovered since then as he had iinjury problems meaning he was very unfit this year, he looked very ordinary this year. He is worth a crack though I reckon

Geelong is not really crying out for KPP either. They have Ottens, Mooney, N.Ablett (looks very promising), Hawkins (comming) who are or will be handy KPP's. Down back they also have Scarlett, Egan & Harley. What they are crying out for is a franchise KP forward who can nkick 70+ goals.

A good preseason could see playfair become a very good player. He is still young and you could get him cheaply.

Thanks for that info!

Either way, whether we decide to pluck for one of McDougall or Playfair, our expectations are going to be pretty low. Therefore, we may be pleasantly surprised. Ultimately, though, we may pass on both or be beaten to the punch for them by another club.

I agree, and with that in mind I'd take Playfair if we could get him in exchange for a late pick.
