The Tigers head into the off-season with picks 2 & 3 currently in the National Draft as well as the following players coming out of contract.

Out Of Contract:
Jacob Blight(r)
Thomson Dow
Campbell Gray(r)
Oliver Hayes-Brown(cat b rookie)
Jacob Koschitzke*
Kaleb Smith
Tyler Sonsie
Tylar Young

Unlike last year there doesn't seem to be any exodus of players, while we also aren't really linked to anyone major with Malcolm Rosas from the Suns the only player we've been linked with albeit not major speculation. There is some speculation that we may be open to trading one of our 2 picks for a couple of later picks and/or a future pick.

Feel like the club is really not very active in the free agency, trade part of the off-season. I would rather we used the money spent to re-sign Lynch & Prestia on overpaying a FA who can come in and help the team for the next 7 years. They desperately need some new ready made pieces to slot in to start impacting

The way Free Agency has worked out, it has been a failure imo. It rarely gets used to see a bottom team to be able to rebuild faster by adding players. The only way it has remotely done that is when a team like the Eagles get a insanely good pic by effectively getting worse "now" ala Oscar Allen leaving for a first band Pick 2 - which is a insane reward for Oscar Allen wanting to leave your team. Effectively this outcome creates
outcomes where
-The Eagles receive unfairly high compensation in the form of Pick 2 for losing Oscar Allen, who is worth a pick 10, at best. Despite getting this overpay, they are still asking for a compensation package.

-Richmond, a team who were historically bad last year & very much "earned"/needed the pick 2 for finishing 2nd bottom - now have to settle for pick 3, & everyone else goes back 1 more spot, again undermining the even more broken draft process.

-The defending flag winners Lions, are able to get Oscan Allen in to keep their window open & lose no players & likely not even have to overpay in spades like the teams like Saints, North have to do to win Free Agents. In fact, the Lions & Cats are able to use their success and the opportunity to win a flag as a way to get a discount on getting the weakest teams, best players.

Then on the flipside to this you have The overpaying by the saints to have to get TDK, & also retain Wanganeen is very scary. Free Agency has made it pretty impossible for teams like StKilda & North to stay relevant. I think the Saints obtaining TDK & retaining Wanganeen are decisions which definitely make them better - but the cost for them to do that was insane. as in success, bigger club etc. People are having a crack at the Saints for this spending, but ultimately, they were paying only what was required to get/keep these players. The stronger teams like Cats, Lions, have been able to continue to entice high end talent like Smith, Allen, on fairly team friendly deals. Free Agency works in the sense of how free trade works in the real world. Small guys overpay, to keep the big guys big.

System is very broken, gonna kill a club or 2 IMO. And the cynic in me things thats likely the entire point.

Just cause you don’t see or hear us publicly being linked to players doesn’t meant we aren’t chasing.

We were chasing Dempsey from cats before he signed, been involved in the Reid stuff so we are definitely dipping our toes in.

But it’s gotta suit us too.

Sure, you only hear what you hear, but we are not hearing much. Reid talk was never realistic as we had to trade our picks for him.

Chasing Dempsey seems pointless we would have to overpay him on the $$$ and also then overpay the Cats. It's on the UFA front i get a bit disappointed as they are opportunities to get a quality player on your list without costing you draft picks. Sadly though there is no real point to UFA if rebuilding. Have to question the motivation around the design of this system as the shittest teams have the shittest paths as both buyers and sellers. I don't see how it can be successfully used to "Getting better", faster.

The gap between the good teams & bad ones this year was about as pronounced as ive ever seen. The Bottom 8 teams shared an average of 6 wins each between them, while the top 10 shared an average of 14 wins each. This trend is getting worse as this system is driving it.

Its ironic. Free Agency has played out exactly like the free world. It has killed the middle class. The middle has become a single class of Proles, while the Top 10 create a inner party. The result is a game/life less fun. Thought the quality of games this year was incredibly poor. Far too many blowouts. With Tasmania coming in I don't see it getting better anytime soon either as the talent pool is just not there to sustain this many clubs.

One year is not a trend. We’ve come off 2 years where down to 14 were a shot at finals with 1-2 weeks to go.

Ive been told that we are very interested in Sam Butler & he is more than likely coming to us.

These arguments are just so short-sided. 2023 and 2024 are some of the most even seasons we've ever seen. We've just got 3 clubs in major rebuilds, Bombers and Sydney who had injury Crisis', and Melbourne+Carlton who played Archaic football + the saints (just always seem to be mid table).

It's just how sport works. Not every season is going to be even, there are going to be bad teams and mediocre teams.

And with the free agency good teams will attract players, there is nothing flawed about it, just how sport works.

The free agency system is not the reason to blame for this year having a clear separation in teams. It helps rebuilding sides just as much as it does for the contenders. - Mckay netted north a top pick, Saints a top pick for Battle, Allen pick 2.

The main issue is the compromised draft system - North would look a lot better if they had Will Ashcroft, Darcy and Daicos playing for them i'd bet.

Also impacts how long it takes to rebuild, instead of pick 1 and 19, you're now getting 1 and 30, whilst getting restricted access to talent.

Actually a fair few players that have moved to poorer clubs, and not that many big names overall tbf.

Just a fair few teams that are in that 'poor cycle' due to list management decisions imo.

Thoughts on Sam Butler? Dan Butlers brother who’s playing at the hawks.
Should be all over him. Him and Rosas add some much needed speed to our side. Butler same age as our 2021 class is perfect.

2021 NAB AFL Draft: Richmond

9. Joshua Gibcus

GWV Rebels, NAB League / Eastpoint FC / St. Pat’s College

State: Victoria (Country)

Height: 196cm

Weight: 87kg

Date of Birth: 04/04/03

Cal Twomey's Phantom Draft Prediction: 9

Developing tall defender who has emerged this year to be included in the Australian U18 Academy team against Geelong (VFL) where he was one of his side’s best. He also showed his skill to be one of Victoria Country under-19s better performers in the NAB AFL Challenge game against Victoria Metro in July. Blessed with an elite vertical jump, his intercept marking and aggressive spoiling are both features of his rapidly developing game. With similar traits as Melbourne’s Jake Lever, he also played 10

17. Tom Brown

Murray Bushrangers, NAB League / Mooroopna FC / Geelong Grammar

State: Victoria Country

Height: 186cm

Weight: 77kg

Date of Birth: 30/07/03

Cal Twomey's Phantom Draft Prediction: 18

A line-breaking defender who loves to take the game on and step past the opposition using his elite agility. Composed and a great decision maker he can also go forward and impact the game. His father Paul played 84 games for Geelong but it wasn’t enough to qualify as a father-son so he’s eligible in the open 2021 NAB AFL Draft. Represented Victoria Country at under-19s level against Victoria Metro in 2021 and was among his team’s best as well as playing five matches for the Bushrangers, averaging 16.8 disposals at an impressive 75 per cent efficiency as he mixed his football between the Bushies and Geelong Grammar. Showed his speed over 20 metres with the second best time of 2.98 seconds at the Draft Combine for Victoria Country.

28. Tyler Sonsie

Eastern Ranges, NAB League / Rowville FC

State: Victoria (Metro)

Height: 181cm

Weight: 78kg

Date of Birth: 27/01/03

Cal Twomey's Phantom Draft Prediction: 17

Small midfielder with rare footy smarts and clean hands, making him a stoppage star. His dazzling speed and polished step through traffic out of the centre has drawn comparison to Richmond captain Trent Cotchin. His disposal on both sides is another point of difference. Was Victoria Metro's MVP and earned All-Australian selection in the under-16s in 2019. He started the season well with the Eastern Ranges, playing five matches, averaging 23 disposals (12 contested), and a goal a game, as well as being eye-catching in his only game for Box Hill in the VFL with 22 disposals and two goals. Another member of the NAB AFL Academy, bone bruising to his knee curtailed his year before the shutdown. He was rewarded, however, with a NAB League Team of the Year selection.

29. Samuel Banks

Tasmania Devils, NAB League / Clarence FC

State: Tasmania

Height: 187cm

Weight: 71kg

Date of Birth: 02/04/03

Medium defender also capable of displaying his polish through the midfield. His use of the ball is elite, being a combination of precise decision making and neat disposal by hand and foot. Been Tasmania’s shining light for several years, winning its MVP and All-Australian honours at under-16s level in 2019. Had an injury interrupted season after suffering a broken wrist, missing the NAB AFL Academy game. But was in sparkling form before and after that, playing four matches with the Devils in the NAB League, averaging 21.8 disposals and was selected in NAB League’s Team of the Year.

30. Judson Clarke

Dandenong Stingrays, NAB League/ Yarra Valley Grammar

State: Victoria (Country)

Height: 179cm

Weight: 69kg

Date of Birth: 17/10/03

Left-footed small forward who is dynamic around goals, using his elite agility and speed to great effect to find space and convert. As well as that goal sense, he also brings energy, pressure and a sharp competitive edge, not unlike Western Bulldogs rising star Cody Weightman. His skill set and potential was to the fore in a five-goal performance for Victoria Country in a trial match against Victoria Metro this year. Overcame an ACL injury in 2019 to return to full fitness and form this year, playing five matches with the Dandenong Stingrays and averaging 17.6 disposals, 3.4 tackles and 0.8 goals per game. He was also selected in the NAB League Team of the Year. Strong performer in the 2km endurance run with a time of 6:19min (Strava tested) as part of the 2021 NAB AFL Draft Combine program.

Rookie Draft

7. Bigoa Nyuon
