He had zero injury problems as a junior
I stand corrected. I wasn't sure, those sorts of issues can follow you from a young age. I've had back problem's since I was about 13, and obviously I had the shoulder injury to contend with as well. Don't think that ever properly healed, but then it was torn up pretty badly.

Gumbleton has always been over-rated - Could never hold his ground in one-on-one contests and was too easy to play against for defenders - Interesting Hansen went at number three and has been a good player over the duration and nothing more - My guess is Gumbleton would have been at a similar level with no injuries.

At the time, who on our list was comparable to Stewart and which similar players were able to be picked up in the draft?

Midfielders like Balic and Webb are not in short supply.
Lav, Francis, Redman, Langford. There's an argument to be made that Stewart's form and his ability to cover the turf better than 90% of the key forwards in the league has forced positional moved for Redman and Francis, which looks to be better for both of them

For what it's worth I agree with you, although I think Webb is a really nice fit.

Hooker, Carlisle, Bellchambers, Hurley, Daniher and Ryder as 18 year olds.

Jenkins, Ambrose, Hartley and Stewart as 22 year olds.

His strike rate with talls even including Gumby and Bradley is excellent.
Exactly. Say what you like about our drafting of midfielders, but this club has always nailed the kpf/kpds

Rival clubs are circling versatile midfielder Lukas Webb ahead of the AFL off-season

WESTERN Bulldogs could lose one of its talented young midfielders as rivals circle versatile ball winner Lukas Webb.

The 21-year-old has struggled to lock down a senior berth in his third AFL season and is weighing up his future.

The Dogs are keen to keep Webb and have offered him a deal to stay for at least the next two years.

But the No.27 draft pick is eyeing more senior AFL opportunities and looks set to wait until after the season to make a decision.

The depth and strength of the Dogs’ young gun midfield means Webb’s best chance to cement a permanent onball position could be interstate.

Midfield teammate Lin Jong will return from a knee reconstruction next season, adding further competition for spots in the middle in 2018.

Gold Coast could make a play for Webb to help bolster its thin midfield following a string of player departures including Jaeger O’Meara, Dion Prestia and potentially Gary Ablett.

Webb, from Gippsland, lost his senior place on the eve of the Dogs’ stunning finals campaign last year and was again omitted from the team for Friday night’s loss to Greater Western Sydney.

The goalkicking midfielder has averaged 11 possessions across nine senior games over the past two seasons, including only four senior matches this year.

The Dogs have smartly retained their priority young premiership stars from poaching raids but midfield pair Webb and Clay Smith appear the most vulnerable to other offers after stints in the VFL.

Webb’s form in the VFL has been strong, kicking four goals in a best on ground performance against Coburg three weeks ago.

I don't think that there is any doubt that Stewart has created a nice and unexpected problem.
While Stewart appealed as a recruit because of his age and athleticism I am sceptical of anyone who would claim that they saw this coming from Stewart, especially this soon.

I'd expect that we're now planning a long-term forward line around Daniher and Stewart and that we'll manage the list accordingly.

It's not just about Stewart being the incumbent, he's shaping as a physically more capable Gunston/Lynch (Ade)/Watts and I think he's as exciting a forward prospect as anyone we have on the list (I wouldn't bother comparing anyone with Daniher).

The next move should be to add Boyse to the list, as a mid-sized/small/half forward, and to get Laverde, Begley and Francis training with the midfielders from November.

I saw Stewart in a pre-season VFL game early in the year and thought we had something straight away.

I could see he would break into the side and I could see even in the one game that we had a player. The preceding games in the VFL confirmed it. Clearly Dodoro had done his homework.

There is always one.

I don't get why Essendon keep doing it I was actually surprised we were into our eyeballs with O'Merea.
I wouldn't believe everything you read. Especially from somebody that derives a wage from talking shit.

He's a muck raker and nothing more.
