Kelly deal but only if his contract doesn't lose us any promising players.
i think that would be part of the consideration.
Kelly > Kennedy & Hopper.
But Kennedy & Hopper would be cheaper contract wise and fill two spots instead of one (though with Laverde, Langford, Begley, Mutch, Clarke - I'm less worried about starting mids over the next few years).

Way i see it - Kelly's contract would eventually be offset by Goddard retiring.
In that time, McGrath & Parish will push for some better than average deals.
We will also have Hooker coming towards his twilight, plus Berger and Belly.

If Sydney can support the wages Buddy, Tippett, Parker, Hanneberry and JPK would be on(plus with Mills, Heeney, Lloyd and Jones looking the goods), we can support Hurley, Heppell, Merrett & Kelly with the rest of our list.

My call, if i had both deals landed but could pick one, would be add Kelly over Hopper and Kennedy.

Non that play Essendon
Considering we have done well out of recent drafts I wouldn't be opposed to the club offering first round pick for Kelly.

Kelly would be akin to a first round pick with a bit of development and proven footy smarts so we would come out ahead unless there is an absolute gun we are eyeing in the draft.

Seems likely hopper will go to geelong. That's all the talk with him at the moment. Brother plays in that area i think.
Wouldn't have thought they could afford him? Ablett coming in and they'll likely have to give up their 2nd rounder to make it work, then there's his salary (which is supposedly still around the 800k mark).

Geelong are one of those clubs that will struggle to make many deals this year, as per Hawthorn, Collingwood, etc.

Talk today about getting rid of Menzel, and Mackie or Lonergan or both to retire may give them some cash.

Word is they're trading a player for Ablett.
Fair enough. Either way I'm not sure they've got the currency in terms of picks or cap space to get Hopper. There's no way in hell a club would accept a late 2nd (which is all they really have) for a player like Hopper (who in all honesty isn't what they need, they seriously lack speed), Gold Coast are quite rightly demanding Pick 20 in exchange for Ablett given he is under contract and is still producing some very good numbers.

Can't see anyone really being interested in Menzel given the fact that he just doesn't apply pressure or tackle. Knows where the sticks are I'll give him that, but when you've got a big lumbering bloke like Hawkins in your side you need your smalls and mediums to apply pressure.

Even Motlop, who would've had some clubs chomping at the bit to get him in a few years ago just doesn't do enough and often looks lazy.

So according to the media GWS are going to lose: Kelly, Hopper, Whitfield, Smith, Kennedy and they are going to be happy to accept 2nd rounders for most of them...yeah sure they are! It's 2017 not 1995 when you could package up Ridley&Delany and get a jet in return.
If any club is going to be raided it will probably be the Gold Coast because everyone would be looking to get out of that train wreck of a club.

I think Hopper for Motlop is a fair swap.

Motlop would fit them well because he is mercurial. They have lots of grunt but another mtchwinner to replace Johnson would work well.

Whitfield - Hawks for 2018 1st & GWS' 2nd
Smith & Hopper - 2018 1st & Carlton's 2nd rounder
Kelly - Saints for 2017 1st and Hawks 2017 1st
Kennedy & Carlton's 2017 2nd - Essendon for 2017 1st.

They would still like up as:
Wilson Haynes Tomlinson
Williams Davis Shaw
Coniglio Ward Duncan
Lobb Cameron Greene
Lloyd Patton Deledio
Mumford Ward Shiel
PLUS
2017 - 3x 1st round picks, 3x 2nd round picks
2018 - 2x 1st round picks

and a hell of a lot of cash to go hunting players with.

I think Hopper leaving is still predicated on whether or not Kelly stays or goes. If Kelly stays (which seems the most likely scenario at this stage), would GWS even be able to afford Motlop given the rumours of a huge cap squeeze?

He would be a good replacement for Johnson I agree, but whether they could afford him is debatable (depending on what happens with other players of course). Wasn't the rumour that Port were the ones chasing Motlop?

I suspect Hopper goes anyway. I think he recognises that he may not always be assured of a spot at GWS and the pull to come home would also be a factor.

I won't be surprised if GWS have a bit of a fire sale this off season to keep the top end talent satisfied. They will keep the Taranto's and Setterfields of the world because they will be on small contracts and then the Hopper's, Smith's and such will be on the table.
