Emotions aside, Kelly.
Although i would need therapy from the heartbreak.

Are the two mututally exclusive though in reality?
Dunno, depends where our cap sits. But the two scenarios keep coming up, so if we have to prioritise one or the other then I was curious where sentiment lay.

If the choice is between acquiring Kelly and keeping McKenna, what would you prefer?

If I had to choose, Kelly but looking at the space being freed up with the retirements this year and next year I can see the club saying to McKenna that we will back end your deal to bring Kelly in.

We were pretty bloody close to getting JOM to join us last season.

If we manage to get Kelly I back us to make top 4 next season.
I don't think we were that big a chance last year with JOM because the Hawks were a top side verses a bottom side wheres with Kelly its out of a top side in GWS verses an up & coming side in us and one or two lower level teams.

And also considering we had absolutely no idea where our list was at with the returning players I find it very unlikely we would make a play for Jaeger.

The media just like to drop our name for the clickbait.

Exactly. We were interested but only if he came through the PSD, were never going to trade for him.

I think the club has reined him in with regards to "project players" and especially project talls in the National Draft at any rate, they seem to have realised that very few of them actually came good.

Looking back at the 2010 draft though, it'd probably be fair to say that it wasn't a particular great draft for anyone. The only player still on our list from that years crop is Heppell all of the others were later delisted with the exception of Jenkins who we traded (not including Howlett because he was a promoted rookie and might not be at the club for much longer).

He's done a lot better in recent years since the sanctions, though that may be because he's been forced to actually pay attention and has coaches telling him what they want. Hopefully we can get our list back into balance, otherwise we'll end up like Carlton/Collingwood, etc. and having huge holes in the list right when we should be contending (for example Draper is the only ruckman we have under 25 and we don't currently have someone developing who can come in over the next 3 years or so and replace Hooker as that power forward).

Just out of curiosity what players are you thinking of?

But that's not really the equation though is it.
More like: acquire Kelly and lose McKenna, or keep McKenna and 800k for someone else...

Kelly is a jet, but I'm not sure he's the key to a premiership for us. He'd need to be if we're to pay his price tag. Not that I believe we're legit in the running though.

In terms of project talls? Well the obvious one is Steinberg who never should've been taken that high. Then there's Sean Gregory, Michael Still, etc. There's a few others but I can't really be bothered going back through our draft history for the last 10-15 years.

Jesse Lonergan worth a look? Would be a cheap inside option

Had not thought about him until you posted his name.

From the little I've seen of him I've always liked him, he's a bull.

I reckon that he's the sort of player that we should look at especially if he wanted a fresh start. Certainly couldn't hurt to have some ready to go midfield grunt in reserve.

Is Sheeds still on the board at GWS?

A Sheedy, Stewart and Merrett welcome party is our best shot at Kelly.

Sheeds will know him even though he didn't coach him, Stewart will have played with him at GWS and Merrett played with him at Sandringham (albeit briefly).

I have severe concern for anyone who would pick McKenna
Presumably McKenna comes with the option of spending the rest of the money on someone else. With James Kelly retiring, McGrath moving into the midfield, losing McKenna to pay for Kelly would be robbing Peter to pay Paul, when Peter is already half broke and Paul isn't as poor as you think he is. That isn't to say I would choose McKenna, given I don't know a whole lot about Kelly I can't really make a call either way. But it's interesting.

Have spent some time off BigFooty and had time to think that perhaps our inside midfield stocks are not as poor as required. What we do lack is that run from defence (no, am not advocating a Jake Lever deal). If the reports that Connor McKenna wants to depart, we are very shallow in this area. The end goal is to have Andy McGrath move up the ground, Gleeson is only ok by foot and that is about all in the senior side at the moment (bar the man in question - Connor McKenna).

Not suggesting we move heaven and earth to get in another half back flanker with elite speed/skills but it is certainly an area of concern for me. With so much thinking time, the man to go after should be D_P_S's man, Hunter Clark (Dandenong Stingrays). If he could come on sooner rather than later and be an AFL player by year 1 - 2, it would allow us more time to draft/develop guys to replace he when he should eventually move further up the ground.

Obviously we have other pressing needs but the more you look at the evidence, the more it makes sense for us to take Hunter Clark.
Clark will go around our pick - Could go earlier if teams think he'll end up as full-time mid.
