An assessment of Carltoon's trade period (LOL SOS)

http://www.theroar.com.au/2015/10/22/carlton-had-a-good-trade-period-spare-me/

Carlton have the worst list in the AFL, of that there is no doubt.

When I had a look at their playing stocks in June, what I found was a capped-out, old, strikingly mediocre bunch of bench scrubs, depth players and good-not-great stars,

The re-arrival of Stephen Silvagni, the supposed architect of Greater Western Sydney’s list build, and departure of much of the previous football administration which plied their trade in the Mick Malthouse era, bought with it the promise of a new direction. The fawning over his return was a white stallion short of a medieval fairytale.

(Just quietly, I reckon a 12-year-old with a box of crayons could have built a decent list out of 12 underage pre-listed players and 11 top 15 picks in a pretty deep draft.)

Well, that lasted all of four months. Make no mistake, Carlton have had an absolutely dreadful trade period, and done almost exactly the opposite of what they should have done as far as recalibrating their list goes.

The simplest way to go about this is to split out their activity into player movements and draft pick movements. This is what the trade period has yielded the Navy Blues in net player terms, including pre-October retirements and delistings.

Out
Matthew Watson, Blaine Johnson, Cameron Giles, Fraser Russell, Chris Judd, Andrew Carrazzo, David Ellard, Lachie Henderson, Tom Bell, Menzel.

In
Sam Kerridge, Lachie Plowman, Jed Lamb, Andrew Phillips, Liam Sumner.

You can probably add Chris Yarran to that list of outs before the end of today, too.

Carlton have lost two of their best young players in Tom Bell (in large part for reasons outside of football) and Menzel, and two above average, prime-age players in Yarran and Lachie Henderson.

The losses of Chris Judd and Andrew Carrazzo were at worst neutral propositions as far as list building goes, given both were 32 and a near zero chance of being AFL standard players by the time the Blues are next contending. The delisted deadwood is nothing more than that.

In their place come Sam Kerridge from Adelaide, and a pu-pu platter of Greater Western Sydney players that couldn’t make the team on a regular basis.

The fact that the Giants gave Carlton their 2015 first round pick as part of this deal, and that these four players are moving to the same place that the guy who recruited them just moved to, should send a shiver down the spine of every Carlton fan.

But wait! It’s all about the draft picks, right? Their draft position looks a little like this:

Before trade: 1, 20, 39, 57, 75, 93, 113

After trade: 1, 8, 20, 21, 59, 60, 113

Not sure if this is allowed, but may strengthen our position:

Yarran is on close to $500,000 next year, but is prepared to move to Richmond for a lower sum and will become a restricted free agent at the end of next year.

At that time – were he to leave the Blues for Richmond on the terms of the current contract offer – the free agency compensation would be most likely an end-of-second-round draft pick.

Rumours about a couple players who we have been linked with during trade period:

http://www.theroar.com.au/2015/10/2...n=Feed:+theroar/aussie-rules+(The+Roar+-+AFL)

Cam McCarthy is another who might still move on the final day with Fremantle continuing to hold out hope that the Giants will relent and agree to a trade.
However, the Giants have not shown any hint of willingness to make a deal for McCarthy so far this trade period, and it’s looking less and less likely that a trade will eventuate.

What could prove to be a deal-maker is an apparent interest in Fremantle’s Lachie Weller from St Kilda, who it’s believed the Saints are willing to offer up pick 14 for. Weller was taken by the Dockers at pick 13 in the last year’s draft and played three games in his debut year. His brother, Maverick Weller, also currently plays for the Saints.

If Fremantle do such a deal they could potentially offer the Giants pick 14 and their first round pick in next year’s draft, which might just sway them.

The Bulldogs reportedly made a play for Matthew Lobbe yesterday involving pick 11, but it’s believed that Lobbe has knocked back their deal and elected to remain with Port Adelaide

Going to throw up what will no doubt be an unpopular trade scenario to get Yarran across the line.

We send picks 12 & 19 to Carlton.
In return Carlton send Yarran 20 & 21.

Now I know people will say that is to big a price to pay for Yarran but I look at it like this. Carlton want our first pick for Yarran and Yarran has made it clear that he doesn't want to be there next year. So we upgrade their 3rd & 4th picks in the draft to 2 picks inside the top 20. That aids Carltons rebuild while we get Yarran a best 22 player for any other team and we still get 2 cracks at the top 25 in the draft where we can still land a couple of the players that we've had our eye on.

We've invested a lot of time and effort into getting Yarran across and to walk away from the trade period without him. We bitch and moan about us not being able to get deals done but that's nothing compared to how players we're looking at next year are going to react to us failing to get a deal done. We go to them and their manager and say hey come to Richmond we'll look after you, they'll look at Richo and Blair clean in the eye and say go feck yourselves.

So as much as it might pain us to give up 12 to get Yarran we owe it to him and ourselves to get the deal done and IMHO walking away with Yarran 20 & 21 from a starting position of 12 & 31 plus a mid 30's pick next year is a pretty solid return.
Downgrading from 12 to 20 and 19 -21 for yarran is a terrible outcome .
And here is why :
1. I know you have been crowing in about it for a while now and your belief is that it's only 8 places in a weak draft . Well I don't believe in this weak draft bs and the combine results suggest likewise . Every year we here a draft is super draft or weak draft , IMO it's a croc of crap and has never been proven correct . Some drafts do produce more top end talent but rarely are these drafts the ones that are tipped as super drafts or vice versa with so called weak drafts .
2. Downgrading 8 places is like taking away the advantage of finishing 9th , rather than being premiers .
3. Smart recruiters only ever use first round picks on pure mids who can play inside and out or KPP's , Yarran does not fit either of these criteria and this is why many don't rate FJ and a major reason why we have little midfield depth , especially inside .
4. Trading away or downgrading first round picks is trading away your future to maintain your current position . We are not the reigning premiers and need to improve not maintain .
5. Houli is a far greater citizen , is more reliable , consistent and arguable on par with Yarran in natural ability.
We gave up a pre season draft pick for Houli .
6. If Yarran does join the club it is likely he will spend less than the average AFL footballers career at RFC .

Yarran is a massive risk and should be considered as such , I personally still doubt he is worth 19.

Thinking out the box we need to take 12 and 19 to the draft to give us more flexibility in future years.

We have to draft 2 players with Lambert upgrade anyway this year so thats that and chase Yarran next year
