Absolutely spot on. Just look at the purple patch out of the middle from Oliver and Trac tonight….it all starts in the centre

The onabllers are the front rowers and second rowers in rugby mate- rugby has always been a five man game - ask any front rower and the two behind us are just pushers. ;)

He's got a lot of work to do this off-season. On the fringe, but a required player. Needs to learn how to find the football consistently and stay engaged.

Under Voss we will be a stronger contested team and hopefully play a more methodical brand of football, but I don't think that midfield unit is quick enough to go with most teams.

Walsh, Cripps and Cerra are absolute locks. Hewett likely too. Cuningham, if fit, is an absolute midfield lock. We need Dow to become a football player to have a balanced midfield.

If that's how we are going to play I'd expect Kennedy to be a lock too.

I'd like to see us get a contested ball specialist with a massive core strength like Petracca. Those thighs also, he can kick the ball 65 metres without any effort.
Complete and utter beast.

I'd say the club starts Dow ahead of Kennedy. Is he the better player now.. no, but he does have a higher ceiling as well as offering a bit of zip over those first few steps out of congestion. Kennedy and Setterfield are essentially in competition with Hewett more than Dow. I really hope we keep pumping time and development into Dow. We simply can't keep busting on all these high picks.

Starting mids: Cripps, Hewett, Dow
Starting wings: Walsh, Cerra
Bench mid(s): O'Brien & one of Kennedy or Setters

Then we have guys who can rotate through. Williams, Martin, Cuningham, Stocker, Fogarty. Potentially Kemp, Philp, Ramsay, Carroll as well.

I like the idea of bringing in a tall winger, provided they are of course a strong mark and solid runner. Provides an aerial edge and bail out kick. Have to admit I'm warming to Brander - think he could play this role whilst doubling as versatile cover in other positions.

They should just play in their best positions and where they are most effective. One at HBF one at HFF. Not everyone at this club needs to be rotated through the middle.

None of the Melbourne mids are overly quick. They have elite run outside that is our issue. Langdon and Brayshaw spread and run. Fast. Who are out equivalents? Don't say LOB...

We should be trying Williams and Martin on the wings. Both have some pace and would benefit from getting to play a bit of of bruise free football out on the flanks to preserve their injury prone bodies.

We have a coach at Carlton ( finally) who has a clue about midfield play - and the personal track record to be believed - by anyone playing the game right now at any level.

I can pretty much say that I would bet London to a brick - Voss wont be risking his coaching career on skinny runts who cant tackle and cant win a contest.

Prepare to be shocked as to who actually plays betwen the arcs for us next year.

There are a lot of midfielders on our list who are VFL at best in top4 sides.

I guess that is why we are chasing Cerra and went for the Sydney bloke as well.

Pretty much this. I'd expect a lot of people's favourites will be missing from the 22 in Round 1.

Yes but you miss my point, I meant we need someone with a low centre of gravity, strong through the hips and legs. A bull like petracca that can kick it a mile.

You're describing Stocker if you ask me, similar height but I didn't realise Petracca plays at 97kg. Stock would need to add 10-12kg to get anywhere near that.

I'd very much like to see Kemp in the midfield rotation.
Wing, tending to 7th defender when necessary is the obvious role for mine in ‘22. Release the shackles somewhat, he is a dasher with an amazing step for a big guy. Gives that extra tall outlet/defensive option as well. Takes a bit of pressure off our rucks to present to every aerial contest. Cripps, JSOS, Charlie or Harry, even Martin and Kennedy offering that marking target between the arcs is a luxury. (Sorry couldn’t bring myself to list McGov)

Unless Dow becomes an elite mid, he may struggle to be a regular due to a lack of versatility

Hopefully Voss instructs him to just focus on "see ball, get ball"

Although, does need to better defensively, especially in close
I thought his defensive side wasn’t too bad, it’s more his lack of confidence to take the game on. Can seriously get it, just unsure what to do with it. From this years changes, I still see great upside. LOB ain’t done either, but the opportunities are running out.

It's difficult to assess many of our players, Bolton ultra defensive, Teague to open and attacking

Confident the Voss style will have better balance, but players need to take more responsibility

They have no more get out cards this time around

I think they get dragged into the contest more often than not and lack the discipline to maintain width to spread ala McLuggage, Langdon types.

Hoping that Voss will have the backing to call out s**t attitudes and either turf those who aren't willing to adapt, and mould those that are, with a simple unified approach.

Crippa has been screaming out for a coach to match his competitive nature and intensity of vision. Now we have Voss, here's hoping he is backed in above unmotivated players who aren't willing to do what's required.

Both strengthen the midfield depth…

Cerra: Clean and skilled ball user offers good run, knows how to find the ball has developed nicely…
Hewett: Nice balance of inside/outside, good speed and a decent ball winner that can also shutdown good opposition players as well…

Walshy: well not much to say absolute young gun who will only get better, look out competition

Strengthen the midfield through depth of players coming on individually and by more midfield opportunities…

Cunners: was absolutely underused throughout the midfield rotations, hopefully a good recovery from his ACL and he gets the opportunity to execute his unique spread speed power and ball use in and around centre bounces & stoppages…

Fisher: another who was underused in midfield rotations, no doubt smaller framed and I’d like him to put some more muscle and strength on like others, he has a unique set of skills as a player that can give our midfield the outside boost in speed & spread it desperately needs…

Dow: showed us glimpses in the back half of the year some of the exciting skills he has in his arsenal, offensively has tremendous room to grow when he starts backing himself into taking the game on more, defensively still poor, it’s this area that will transform him into a weapon by being much more involved in the game longer, but more importantly enabling him to have far greater impact…

Kennedy: if this kid can improve on what he displayed during this year as a midfielder then the midfield will be significantly better for it, his hardness and attack on the contest is such an important aspect we don’t have or bat very to deep in, if he like a handful of others in the midfield can improve his overall running and two way pressuring acts he takes his game up another level…

Cripps: no doubt has dropped of significantly over the past few years, injuries have impacted on his overall game but his overall strength as the class bull extractor has unfortunately waned altogether, trying to improve his outside game which isn’t a bad thing at all but it’s created some problematic imbalances with his once natural instinctive offloads to teammates often burning the better choices…

Stocker: loved his development down in defense where he showed some of the strengths as a smart strong bodied tough as nails who uses the quote well footballer, matched up well some weeks on opposition small/mediums with some tough assignments on the top class dangerous smalls testing him on others, would like to see him hopefully get a few opportunities with rotations throughout the midfield his natural position…

Philp unfortunately been injured and Carroll both young promising developing midfielders could really add to the overall club midfield depth, both individually have some great strengths and have a lot of work in front of them and would benefit from a proper uninterrupted season for the VFL reserves team…

Kemp: atm it’s anyone’s guess where we will actually have him playing and developing with the new coaching system, long term imo he’s a midfielder i think he plays in the manner like the Bont, most likely will continue to build his game up throughout the defense possibly a few matchups higher up the ground as well…

Martin and Honey have the attributes to get a little time with centre bounces, Martin we know he certainly has done it obviously before, Honey most likely will be settled as a forward having the skills to play high up the ground and also deep as well…

Williams most likely will need to build his overall endurance up to a level that will enable him to get any type of minutes in the midfield, was injured and banged up for most of the year and is a little injury prone as a player, Voss might see him as a better fit as a rebounding defender…

O’Brien: we know his strengths as a player great endurance & run good speed and a tremendous left peg, has been held back due to deficiencies on his defensive game both one on on tackling/spoiling and ball winning, probably has been overlooked and underplayed a little more that he should have been, displaying some good signs in the later part of the year, we’re crying out for a good winger can he go up another level?

Setterfield: horribly played out position on a wing just doesn’t possess the traits that a winger needs needs, he’s a tall midfielder that needs to be played in the right manner that suits his skill set, no doubt like many players he needs to develop playing a second position but wing isn’t it , at times come across as lazy with effort and the defensive part of his game…
