Im very happy to have Stringer as the 3rd with Daniher and whoevers in form and on the list out of Mckernan, Brown, Stewart. With a draft pick used on a key tall fwd.

Richmond also have Dusty and a midfield that runs hard forward to kick goals. We don't
Collingwood have Stephenson, JDG, WHE & Treloar as goal kickers. We don't have that calibre.

Hawks ran Buddy and Roughead, then Roughead and Gunston.
Lions had Lynch, Brown and Brayshaw
We had Lloyd and Lucas.
When the Eagles were flying this year, they were running JJK, Darling and Waterman.
At our best in 2017, it was Hooker, Daniher and Stewart

3 talls can work.
McKernan, Brown and Stewart have shown glimpses, but have also spent stints in the VFL.
Lynch, Daniher, Stringer - that's an elite tall forward line and not an immobile one either.

Would love 2MP. Great ruck support and a good leading forward.
Well why not find a hard running midfielder who can hit the scoreboard?

Thats what pies and tigers have that differentiate us not 2 tall forwards and Stringer up front.

We did have Lloyd/Lucas 15 years ago pretty sure the game is fsr different to that era suggested ala brown lynch and brayshaw ect aswell

Personally reckon Langford can be one of our midfielders that plays mostly through the midfield but then rotates up forward. He is not bad in the forward line at all and can be a medium sized marking target. He's a pretty good set shot on goal too, which I wouldn't say about most of our side.

Langford's apprenticeship in the forward line could turn out to be very handy over the next few years. Particularly if we are playing him, Myers and Heppell together. Myers can't play other positions and we mostly want to keep Heppell in the middle as much as possible. Its not as bad as it sounds because we are complementing them with some pace with Zerrett, Smith and Zaharakis. I've seen much worse balanced midfields.

The more time that passes this year the more I'm open to the idea of drafting a key forward with our first pick. Our midfield is actually performing better and better as the year goes on and I'm really bullish about the prospects of Mutch, Clarke and Redman.

Interesting how both those sides lost to a team with a smaller forward-line.
Richmond has been the form side of the last two years, and Adelaide crumpled mentally in the Grand Final. But if Franklin hadn't been injured in the Granny, then Bulldogs might very well still be waiting.

But the over-arching point is this. You can decide to try and change your team every year to reflect what the last two premiers did. Or you can look at what got sides into the Grand Final, and has been a recurring recipe for success for the last five years and structure your side on those principles. Given how our list is currently made up, I'd focus on the second while trying to take learnings from the first. Which to me means having a good structure with talls and smalls, and bringing heaps of pressure. Manning up in the F50 as well.

Its interesting to note everyone is lauding Richmond and the Bulldogs (rightfully), while they do their darnedest to go out and recruit more tall forwards. Bulldogs have brought in Schache and Cloke, Richmond are chasing Lynch. They don't think their premiership structures are the be all and end all either.

Yeh. Im not saying to go as small as those teams did. Im happy to have Jake as the 3rd biggest forward behind a combination of Daniher and 1 of Mckernan/Brown/Stewart.

I just think our priorities need to lay with the midfield and not key forwards.

Are any of Dylan Shiel, Josh Kelly or Hopper free agents in 2019 going into 2020?

Agreed; Bulldogs were in rampaging form while Tippet and Franklin were both well off their best. Sydney also had a lot of under-performing players that day.

Adelaide's form had dropped and their KPF's did little to impose themselves; Jenkins and Walker have both had games this year they've shown that can take hold of a game, but completely failed to do so. Richmond smashed them all over the field though to be fair, not sure any forward structure would have mattered.

I think quality talls are still needed, but with modern zones, poor or immobile talls can no longer provide much benefit.

I wonder if the trend towards smaller forward lines will change a bit when numbers are more even at both ends. Suddenly marking forwards might get more opportunities. Plus has anyone seen what happens when teams can't get key forwards for long periods of time. You end up like the Bulldogs desperately trying to cobble together a forward line. Its ugly viewing and ends up costing a fortune at the trade table.
I even wonder how Richmond would go if Riewoldt was to get a long term injury.

We only have one high quality, long term key forward prospect and that's Daniher. Stewart may one day get there but right now he's a 3rd or 2nd tall (when in form). Right now with just Daniher injured we are lining up with McKernan and Brown. Does anyone think that is a premiership winning combo?

I don't think we should reach for a forward no matter what, but if we believe in a key forward that is available at our pick then I won't have a problem with it.

i think Shiel will be a free agent under the new rules.
With collingwood into May and signing up JDG, and the hawks into Lynch, Shiel could be a goer if we can end the year on a high.

Carlton will surely be enquiring, but not sure if he goes that far backwards from GWS.

Gossage saying Adam Cerra at Freo is gettable as early as this year.

Yes please!
Cerra would be a ripper.

Our top 10 pick players would make Carlton weep.
Parish, Francis, Stringer, Smith, Heppell, Cerra, McGrath, Hurley.

I agree, but what do we give up?? Obviously our first...and one of Hartley/Collier/??/swap of picks next year eg: our second for their 3rd??
I highly doubt they would want Colyer as he wouldn't be around for their next tilt. I could be wrong but feel they have a few Hartley types already.

Maybe our 1st and a future 2nd? I'm positive they won't take anything less that the worth of a top 5 pick considering he was pick 5 12 months ago and he has shown he is worth every bit of that selection.

Maybe with any luck they will be feeling generous and take unders after the massive overs they received for Lachie Weller last year :p:p

You would give up picks for Cerra.
If we could get away with a future 1st and GWS' 2nd this year, with something back to us, that would be ideal. Not sure if they'd do it, but with a draft that WA are confident of having some numbers in, they may be keen to secure some to combat developing kids that will go home.

He'd cost us a player we wouldn't want to give up, and there is no one we would give up that they'd want for him.

I reckon Will Brodie would be easier to pry away than Cerra. Would come cheaper and fit our needs a bit better as well.

The suns might be on the verge of a clearout if Lynch leaves. It seems like Dew isnt a fan of the culture and some of the players he has to work with.

Yeah seems he isn't a fan of Brodie. The fact he has only got 2 games this year is baffling when you look at some of the kids who are currently getting a game ahead of him, I reckon about 4 or 5 are still a few years away from being AFL quality footballers.

Fiorini + Brodie for our 1st + a 3rd/4th round sweetener??

Fiorini signed an extension less than a month ago. Not gonna happen.

GWS second for brodie would be a good get though. Maybe a first if they give us the WCE qst back as well.

Ah well. Lyons then maybe?? He seems to be another one Dew doesn't rate who should 100% be in their best 22 yet isn't playing every week.

Gossage corrected himself today and said his management have stated he does not want to leave and will sign for a further 2 years.

Quickest debunked rumour I have heard in a long while.
Had me peaking and brought me right back down there, damn it

Brodie is the only one I really want, maybe Wallis depending on how we see the development of Clarke/Mynott/Guelfi. Unsure as to how gettable Brodie is given that Gold Coast's midfield is already pretty undersized.
