Taking our 22 tonight and assuming Joey replaces stringer and Gleeson would put pressure on Goddard,

Wallis in would mean Guelfi out?

THats guelfi, redman, Ridley, laverde and begley as kids putting pressure on seniors and Colyer, green, brown, smack and mcniece as the mid Aged depth

Plus Clarke, Mutch, mynott and houlahan largely untested at that level

Not too shabby

Joey wouldn't replace stringer.

I will not be stunned if we do not go after a FA. IMO we still lack a genuine classy midfielder but apart from Gaff who I suspect may stay in WA there is not one. Also think there will be limited spots on the list anyway. They will sign Bagually. Looks most likely that McKernan will get a contract and they should sign Brown as well as he gives cover at both ends of the ground. That would be 3 spots that most would not have predicted being filled.

Ants Aaron Hall will be 28 before a balls kicked in anger next year. Not sure how much improvement he has left.
I meant improvement from moving to a better team where he’s surrounded by good structures, good players and real goals & success to work towards.

Like Pyke. Played good football with issues throughout out his career, but really was icing on the Lions cake and cost bumpkus.
If he is cheap, which he would appear to be, he'd be a good pick up. I think the coaches want all our small forwards to play through the middle, so he'd be one of the better rotation options we'd have.
Exactly. And no tag here.

If we recruit another outside running midfielder with questionable defensive attributes, I am going to membership my microwave
And if he only cost a third rounder and was an upgrade on Colyer as a minimum?

Weren't people saying the same things about Devon Smith last year, personally I'd love another one or two of him. GAff also fits the bill as an outside running midfielder with questionable defensive attributes but he would no doubt improve our team. Even if Hall doesn't improve our best 22 he would absolutely improve our list/depth.

It'll all be moot though cause Gaff will stay out west and Hall, if he goes, will likely go for money and therefore he'll end up at North or Carlton.

It's looking like we'll have minimal list changes this year, due to the performance of our old/fringe players (Goddard, Dea, Brown, Smack, Baguley etc). So unless there are a few surprise trades, the only probables at this point are Jerrett, Green, Leuenberger and maybe 1 or 2 of Hartley, Long and McNeice. Then we have McKernan and Draper that could/should be upgraded and probably a few FA/trades to bring in. Things are looking tight and depth is looking as good as it has been for a long time.

seriously don't understand why we would go after Gaff.

First of all, Gaff plays on a wing. Currently, Zaharakis and McGrath are playing that role and I wouldn't wont any of them moved out of this position. Zaharakis has been our 2-3 best midfielder over his last 25-30 games. He's a two way runner with good pace, good skills and can kick goals. McGrath has been recruited to play on a wing for the next ~12 years (maybe more), moving him out of the midfield will hurt his development.

Secondly, with the trade market as thin as it is + the reported deals Gaff has been offered, you can be sure we'll lose a Parish/Langford down the line due to salary cap reasons.

Can we use another star midfielder? Y-E-S, but Gaff is not the type we need.

Wallis continues to drive his salary up and unfortunately probably makes WBD more reluctant to let him go. His last couple of months have been exceptional, and most of that hasn't even been playing his preferred position. Seems like he's basically given Beveridge no choice but to give him more time on the ball.

It’s funny that he would be 4th in our goalkicking this year and he is currently 2nd for the Dogs

Because Gaff is arguably the best wingman in the comp let alone well inside the top 10 midfielders in the comp this season.

To be fair, what we would have to give up and potentially lose out in gaining Gaff would be a no from me but it's easy to see why we would potentially go after him.

Spending a third round pick and $300,000 of salary cap (at minimum) on an upgrade to a player who probably won't be anywhere near the senior team next year anyway? Sounds like a great deal to me...

Devon Smith the high pressure, ball winning small forward from GWS?

No, literally nobody was saying that about Devon Smith last year. Smith and Hall are chalk and cheese

I did say as a minimum he's an upgrade on Colyer. Who if available and in-form would have played plenty of games this year. You don't want a best 22, you want a best 30 because you will have injuries. And if Hall can play near his best, then he's almost certainly in our best 22.

And frankly, including Bags we have Bags, Colyer, Long and Green fighting over a single spot in the best 22, rotating small and midfield. Hall would be a strong chance to move ahead of any of them next year if Bags goes even slightly backwards.

Plenty were whining that he's outside. Even some opposition laughed at us getting him (and Saad and Stringer) on that basis.

I've mentioned this earlier but you are forgetting we have kids like Mutch around that mark who will be above the 4 players you mentioned by next year. Much rather be playing Mutch than Hall next year, pardon the pun.

If you are paying $300k and a 3rd round pick you want somebody who will actually improve your side. I'd rather take the punt on a 3rd round kid in a deep draft.
