Trade Hoops

I don't know about others on this board but i'm getting genuinely sick to death of the "Trade Player X" threads.

Houlihan is one of the best kicks in the competition, and not every player in every team can be a hard-ball magnet. Now that our list is strong enough to allow us to play players in the position that best suits them (rather than having to play our best players out of position coz there's no-one else to fill certain important holes) we might actually be able to get full value out of Houlas.

At the very least you monkeys could STFU for half a season while he has the opportunity to do his stuff under a new coach.

Three months ago there was non-stop "Delist Russell" rubbish on this board - you don't hear that any more.

Thank christ...someone with some ____ing sense!

Well said. :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Trust me, i've seen a fair few tapes.:thumbsu:

Unfortunately, I think it's too late for Houlihan to regain that ability to play on the Half Forward Flank/Forward Pocket after his style of gameplay was dramatically changed when pagan persisted with him as a defender, and I think that if we try and use him where he played when he was a younger bloke with potential, we will be backtracking with him. It took a couple of years to settle him into the Forward Flank, just like it took him a couple of year to settle into the Back Flank. At 26 years of age, the two years would be better spent using him on the Back Flank rather than trying to re-kindle his forward potential, if anything. It's a touchy case.

Althought I must admit, he showed that he may have the potential to play a forward role again after last years win against Port Adelaide.

No hard feelings, but this is utter garbage.

Noob? Not to be mean to a fellow Carlton fan but that has to be one of the most anti-logical posts I have ever read. Just because you have watched a few YouTube clips of Hoops from back in the day makes you no expert. He is a very valuable player to the list and you will see in the next few years that the youth policy that first-year draftees must get a game will be thrown out for a more finals like attitude of playing your best 22. Hoops is in our best 22 and his skills (something we lack) adds a lot to the side and his goal-sense is as prominent as it was in 2001. As many have mentioned his trade value will be rock-bottom after a year off so he's not going anywhere.

But seriously, you mention Browne, Armfield, Russell, Wiggins as though they are closer to being in our top 22 than him, please

Well they all do one thing he doesn't.

And that's throw their bodies into the contest without fear.

I want players who will show a bit of heart when the chips are down.

And that's not Houlihan.

He's had plenty of chances to stand up and be counted when we've been down but he always goes missing.

Hoops isn't going anywhere.

We need someone who can kick bloody straight and over 50m's in our forward line.

Fisher = cant kick over a jam tin

Russel = tries hard but still a pretty shit kick for goal

Betts = crumber

Wiggins = big kick but inacurate

Edwards = replica of fisher

Crying out for a quality goal kicker other than fev.

Because footy is only about having 22 players that are willing to throw their bodies on the line, who cares about skill right

I never claimed to be.

Don't even bother trying to make assumptions.

What good is skill if you are chasing shadows and go missing when the game gets tough?

You have to want the ball before you get the ball.

Houlihan is a senior player who doesn't lead by example and goes missing in tough games.

We don't need those kind of players.

He's got no place in the backline.
Midfield is sorted.
Forward line is lacking some quality.
And although we're raising some talent by playing youngsters week in and week out (i.e. Edwards, Hartlett), it's also possible that Hoops could cement his spot in the HFF. His kicking for goals is his strength, and although he's not one to run, chase and apply forward pressure, he'd be producing 30-40 goals over a season.

Fisher ??? Hoops

Betts Fev Wiggins

It makes good sense to me to put him on the HFF, as out HFFs normally lead up the ground, allowing Fev more room to lead into in the forward line. And like i said, he's got a good, reliable eye for goal. It's not to say he has to start there, but the rotation normally comes in handy during matches. If we were to develop/recruit a CHF that would compliment Fev's leading + dominating the forward line, we'd be set.

Obviously been a great service to the club but I don't see where exactly he will fit in when he is fit to return?
With the likes of Armfield and Browne developing and Wiggins and Russel finally displaying their potential, it's going to be difficult for him to get a run in my opinion.
He's still only 26 so we could get a 2nd or 3rd rounder for him.
Thoughts?
27 though when next season starts. Not much currency these days for players of that age unless you're a Jonathon Brown or the like.

As others have pointed out,you must at least agree he deserves a chance in a winning side.

Besides our problem was never that Ryan specifically was soft, our problem was we had too many soft/unacountable players. A lot of players have lifted their game, so even if this doesn't change about him, his skills more than make up for it. His benefits far outweigh his negatives.

As I said, stick him up forward, and mid next year, a lot of people will be revoking their comments.

Houlihan is a quality player who has been very loyal to Carlton and provides a super silky mid/forawrd option. I think it sends a bad message to the young players if we trade someone true blue like him to get a sh#ty 3rd round pick.

If u trade people like him don't cry when our players hold out for extra cash or leave as clubs are about breeding a culture and therefore u need to look after loyal long term players.

Would definitely not put him on the trade table. I rate him as a player, but no team will offer us what he's worth to the side as he's got a stigma around his head. Wouldn't trade him for a 2nd round pick - one of our more experienced and classy player, for a pick which will net us a player who's just as likely to end up on the scrap heap than not.

We might get pick 70+ for him and we should take it.
We'll delist him when his contract is up any way so best get something for him and free some room up in the salary cap to land another good player in trade week.

I have to say I never saw super silky as much as I saw what Smithy is talking about. Loyalty and culture is of utmost importance, as is maximizing your list but it can also come down to the club doing the right thing by a player if they do not see him in the team in say 2010 - in such circumstances the others should see that it is not disloyalty

Why are we even discussing trading a player who is recovering from a serious injury and has not had the opportunity to cement his spot this year.

Bloody nature of BS unfortunately, win, lose or draw each week people are posting about trading or delisting players, the team is finally winning, playing good footy and we want to trade everybody, so far we shoudl trade, Wiggins, Carrrots, Hoops, Walker, Fev, Fisher, Bentick and Russell.

I mean we'll be playing in the under 12's soon.

The only player we should be looking to trade is Ackland, if we could get the last pick in the draft it would hold more value than him.

Just quietly if anyone wanted an example of daylight robbery.....

You do know if he doesn't want to be traded,he won't be traded, but if he did it's only good if he is in a trade for a CHF like Thorp with a early pick.

This is a True Blue Carlton player not one of the johny come lately players who come in the club for 2 years as a trade and get's cut. The guy was playing real good footy until he got injured this year.

There isn't any point in trading for a ordinary round selection. If there is a gun defender or CHF off contract who's young he might be traded along with our first round to get him, probably pushing it for second round. The only thing he might want to stay.

don't think we would get much for him, perhaps he would be part of a package to get a good player this season (Like Josh Kennedy). Depends what other clubs out there think they need and what they can offer us.

Doesn't fit our criteria at Carlton IMO. Can't play players who can't tackle no matter how good they are, it kills you as a side to have that weakness.

Peter McConville wore the 33 guernsey with a bit of heart and pride. He must be gutted to see his old number worn by such a blouse.
