Trade hypotheticals

I'm not looking for a fight or arguing semantics. There's a pretty big difference between 'the media are reporting that no club wants him' & 'he's been linked to Melbourne & that's the very reason he's being discussed here'.

Again, there's absolutely no reason to trade 4th round picks. In practice there'll be no difference between Melbourne's 4th round & Carlton's 4th round. If Carlton want 5 draftees then their 5th round would be pretty much the next pick too (although maybe Essendon would still be picking at this stage with their draft penalties).

EDIT: What you're really saying is that you wouldn't be interested in trading for Garlett

Interest in trading for Garlett would likely depend on price. A 4th round pick doesn't do much for Carlton, agreed, but I can't imagine us offering too much more value. A swap with Blease who is in a similar situation (unwanted, uncontracted) would likely be our offer.

Garlett's output has been worthy of more, but the problem is he comes with baggage and from a club who has actively said they are happy for him to go, whether he wants to or not. There is no value there.
Clarke while tremendously under performing due to injury is a more important prospect, as there are more quality small forwards out there than key position forwards.

I still cannot see how a +39 goal/year small forward (Which Garlett has achieved x3 times in the last four years) is only worth a 5 spot upgrade on a 2nd rd pick .......... Krakouer was worth #25 after a couple of years in Jail, and Garlett isn't anywhere near that situation. Sure his value is at a low point (and I would MUCH rather keep him and get him back on track next year) but calls for a 4th rd selection of a small pick upgrade are crap.

Put it this way. Melbourne claim Frawley wasn't a top 20 defender this year because he was played as a forward
Even at Garlett's worst year (this year) he almost averaged twice as many goals as Frawley, and was 3 behind in total goals.
Frawley = #3 as far as Melbourne supporters are concerned

Surely Garlett would thus be worth their 2nd rd selection :D:thumbsu:

Krakouer had his head screwed on - Garlett doesn't appear to...

A bloke out of form, loose cannon and a club wanting him gone doesn't scream low pick to me.

With talk that Treloar could be interested in a move back to Vic, even if GWS don't want to move him on, perhaps there is an opening for Melbourne to try and snag themselves a bounty.
Pick 2, 3 and their 3rd round pick; and in return they get Treloar, Cameron/Boyd, Frost. Melbourne add to their spine depth, and GWS now have picks 2, 3, 4 to start shopping around to secure some ready made talent. Gold Coast have finally realised to move up they need experience and went and got Malceski, and while GWS got Shaw and Mumford last year they need more experience to ease the burden on the likes of Shiel and co.
3 picks in the top 5 and they could manouvre with St.Kilda to get number one, while also bringing other ready made talent.
You're seriously underrating GWS players or overrating draft picks. Unbelievably unfair trade.

Who?

Don't see us chasing another Grigg for Collins type trade where we'll pick up a fringe player. We'll want a pick.

You traded pick 23 for Bernie Vince and similar for Dawes who are older. Jeffy is more of a niche player, yet a best 22 player is worth something in the third round. The uncontracted Everitt was traded for a pick upgrade. If you've committed, then the trade should be something along these lines.

Krakouer went to jail like Murray Newman. Sounds like he's as mature as Jurrah and Dayle Garlett.

right... Yes Krakouer made a mistake, served his time, rebuilt his life and came back. ALthough he had a past, he had cut most of his baggage

Let's say Garlett gets his life in order at Carlton next year and turns his decision making around - he'd get a lot more on the trade table.

As it stands, his ability to contribute to a team environment is well in the air, as is Murray Newman's. It is this baggage that severely dents their trade value.

Quick question. People seem to think that Mitch Clarke is worth a 2nd rd selection. Question. If this is so then why isn't Garlett worth the same?

Clarke. Most goals scored in a season = 27 and 29.
Garlett. Scored +39 goals x3 of the last four years

Clarke. Hasn't played this year due to injury and mental illness.
Garlett. Hasn't played a lot of football this year due to injury and off-field issues

Clarke. Concerns he won't get back to his best due to health and off-field issues.
Garlett. Concerns he won't get back to his best due to health and off-field issues.

Yes one is (supposedly) a KPF and on a small forward but one is also proven to be within the top handfull of players for his position and the other hasn't.

Yet Melbourne supporters will go on about Garlett having little to no trade value and Clarke being worth a 2nd rd selection .........

Garlett types grow on trees
Clark's don't, big athletic men are hard to come by
Plus Garlett jibs it more than selwood playing for frees

Red hair, freckles, pretty quick, loves a goal... I'm sure you'd know him if you saw him.

Third rounder is gone, second rounder is too much and pick from the Clarke trade I would imagine would be used in the Lumumba deal. Blease has already stated a preference for Carlton which would indicate that you have spoken to him. End of the day, I wouldn't think we would pursue a trade too hard given he's uncontracted and unwanted by the club he's currently at.

Would Geelong settle for a third round pick?
I would back us to get a better player for our needs in the draft in the second round.
But I'm a realist and expect Geelong to demand more than a third round pick.

Your second rounder is a bit lower than what i'd like but with him being a free agent next year we would that,or an equivalent value player.

The best Melbourne would get is 2 and 3 for Treloar and Jaksch, Treloar is worthy of a top 3 pick plus steaknives.

If treloar were to come on the open market I dare say saints would offer pick one.

How good is GWS's position, they have mids galore and can afford to lose a couple tbh. They have to reduce their list size eventually so why not ship out the flight risks first.

Like most clubs we have very intensive one on ones with each player at the end of the year, the huge number of guys we have announced would like out and have shopped, they are the flight risks... oddly enough ;)

Here is a 4way deal

Carlton

Give: Garlett& Pick 28
Receive: Kirstain Jaksch

Geelong

Give: Pick 14
Receive: Mitch Clarke and Pick 28

GWS

Give: Kirstain Jaksch
Receive: Pick 14

Melbourne

Give: Mitch Clarke
Receive: Jeff Garlett

Fair ?

Mitch Clark guys Mitch Clark.

Not Mitch "Michael Clarke".

I commend you for your efforts, but Brisbane supporters never managed to nail it in his years there so I don't hold out hope for anyone else. :D

Mate I'm a believer in getting it right, it sorts out the good to the average posters imo. Hence my Griffen signature haha.

You know he has f all trade value.
Man WCE management didn't want him, and would rather look at former felon shane yarran than Jeffy.
