All those suggest Grimely, Lowden, O'brien ect need to see that generally tall fwds that are any good (buddy, nRoo & jroo, Pav, Rough, kennedy) are high draft picks or F/s (cloke, daniher, hawkins, brown,)
We should judge talent by talent rather than by where they were drafted. Just to disprove the generalisation:

Walker, pick 75 (NSW scholarship)
Podsiadly, rookie draft
Tippett, pick 32
Darling, pick 26
Petrie, pick 23

O'Brien, pick 28
Spangher(!), pick 34

Longer is years off being a senior ruckman in a premiership side.

Doesnt look like this group will win another flag. We knew Buddy was going and our plan B is Heath Shaw and some kids ?

So Daisy and Sylvia are no longer free agency options. Not that I wanted either of them but I'm wondering if there's anyone left.

Apart from longer I don't think I've heard any approaches from the hawks that I actually believe. We have a hole in our list that needs plugging.

Have you seen Longer play? Behind Hale he could take over the Bailey role comfortably and is far more mobile, could have a Brodie Grundy like effect.

Why is our window shut because of the loss of one player? We're still right in the hunt for mine.

What are peoples thoughts on acquiring Darren Jolly for 12 months as back up if Max Bailey was to retire and we claim Billy Longer via a trade with Brisbane?

My reasons are the following:
* He would undertake similar role as to Ben Hudson at the Pies this year.
* We would acquire him as a delisted free agent therefore we get him for nothing.
* If Longer becomes tired as the season wears on, we have Jolly's strong body to come in.
* Would be great asset in the finals with his strong body and nous.
* Would be a very cheap option, not demanding big $$$
* Capable of taking on a coaches role with Longer, Grimley, Lowden.

What are peoples thoughts?

Dont mind the idea. However surely a better bloke kicking around the leagues somewhere than Jolly. David Hille maybe? Otherwise there has to be someone kicking around in the state leagues that would give you a bit more as a mature bodied ruck

Are people fair dinkum about Shaw? Gee wiz, I'm glad the club are in charge of list management rather than everyone around here wanting to jump on every overrated player who's looking to move club. I wish it was the end of trade week/free agent period already so I don't have to read any more of this dribble.

One can only assume the club is beavering away behind closed doors to pull off some trading coup with the cash freed up by Buddy. Let's hope it is for a good young mid.

You mean our group won't win another flag? You gotta be joking mate. We will be near the top next year, bet your house on that. Buddy leaving is a blessing in disguise. His role can easily be filled... Now if Gunston left, then I would be shitting myself.

Jack Gunston... I just feel comfortable when he has the ball. Can't say I ever felt that with buddy. Quite the opposite.

Yep, huge talent but 2 years away at least. He's play 9 games. Hale will have to do most of the ruckwork and that means were gonna struggle.

Were going backwards while the competition improves. 5-6 key players getting older, arguably our best player gone to a rival and nothing lined up as a replacement.

Buddy going isnt that bad but we had to use that $ on 2 established players. Looks like weve been caught out. Will wait and see but Buddy,Bailey,Goo out and Longer in, means no flag next year.

The issue Hawthorn has is the 95% player payment scheme, for one it means that teams over pay B grade players to fill their list. If we have to pay 95% with Buddy leaving we are screwed. Especially being one of the first teams in the free agency merry-go-round as now we have a million dollar gap and f**k all free agents out there to get and no way to leave space and have a crack next year. Never mind the COLA screwing up the bidding process.

The system is still very much flawed.

How are we going backwards? We still have Shoey to comeback into the side. Hill and Anderson have another pre season under there belt. Our older guys aren't quick, it will take injury to ruin there ball winning ability.....next year we will be fine, beyond that is the question.

This doom and gloom is an overreaction.

Chill out fella, our club works miracles every year and the FA period hasn't even officially started yet. There's a lot to play out.

Collingwood showed the way to play it last year - trade a player out (Wellingham) and replace him with someone similar (young) via free agency.

They stuffed it up though because young couldn't cut it. But they still have Brodie Grundy courtesy of that trade.

Our chance to do similar is closing quickly, so not sure what the next step is.

Freo and Sydney are already looking stronger than last year, we look weaker (unless Schoey and Suckling come straight in and perform at their peak).

Front end contracts. Recruit guys on a one year deal. Save cap space for 2014/15.

You can't be serious...
