What have you heard?

I've heard that Gherig is certain to leave WCE and head back to Victoria.

I understand it is virtually a done deal that he will be going to Collingwood because he wants to re-unite with Malthouse

Others that have popped up include Leppitsch to Hawthorn, after turning down 1.9 million offer from StKilda.

I've also heard that David King is on the market from the Roos and that Johnson and Johnson may be looking for more money than Essendon can pay them.

Others?????

You should check your sources GCG- VERY UNRELIABLE!!!
Apart from the Gherig rumour, which I've heard also, Leppitsch is staying with Brisbane, as for the Johnsons'; JJ recently signed a new 2 year contract, it was in the Herald-Sun about a week ago. MJ isn't of contracta at the end of this year, but I may be wrong about that.

J2!!!

You're right, one of the Johnsons have signed with Essendon, my mistake.

However with such a star studded team, there must be some players at Essendon out of contract who might be willing to chase the big money elsewhere.

Dan24, who is out of contract at Essendon?

Not sure who is out of contract, but hopefully the prospect of playing at Essendon is enough to keep our players.

Fortunately, in our sport, not many players leave for money. Barry Young did. I don't think Colbert did. There were probably other reasons in Colberts case.

But, not many players leave for money.

If you look at American sports, it's not un-common to see players representing 7 or 8 teams over their careers. Some rosters look completely different year to year.

Fortunately, it's not like that here in Australia. Carlton and West Coast, over the last 10 years have NEVER lost a player who they have wanted to keep. Especially Carlton. they have NEVER lost a player. If you have a good club environment, and you treat your players well, they will want to stay.

I think we will keep all our players. The lists are dropping to 38 (I think), and Michael Long can go on the veterans list, which saves money.

Anyway, why would a Victorian born and bred Essendon player want to go to Sydney and play in a possible losing team ? Sure you may be getting $300,000 instead of $200,000, but so what ? What's 100,000 dollars when you are already making 200,000 anyway ? What about the price of comfort and family and friends. You can't put a price on that. The price of your teammates respect and friendship. You can't put a price on that.

Money is not the SOLE consideration. There are other factors, which are just as important.

I read in "The Advertiser" that Shane Crawford wants to come to the Adelaide Football club

dont laugh ! I will certainly look through the newspaper reels in the State library if you wish ?

Apparently after this season is over !

I would welcome him with open arms (he is out off contract at the conclusion of this season) also (we can afford him !)

Danny reading your post above reminded me of the Justin Blumfield affair from last seasons trade period.

The offer was in the region of $800K to come and play for Sydney but Blumfield was talked out of it for alot of reasons, one of which was he wanted to stay at Essendon because its a great club with a good record, good prospects and evidently a very enjoyable club to be play for and to be involved in.

In the end the money just wasn't really an important factor.

Blumfield staying at Ess for the enviro was only half of it. I'm not sure but didn't he say that if he didn't go to Syd, he'd go to Coll? I think a main factor in this is the talk which sheeds gave with a little more money sprinkled into the contract helped a lot. I reckon this was the reason we couldn't keep Young at Ess because there wasn't any room in the cap. Anyway if players do go, at least we should get some quality players back. We've got a heap of talent.

Essendon 2000
Who will stop them?

Yes slatts I'm well aware of the 'little chat' Sheedy gave Blumfield which persuaded him to stay at Windy Hill but you are alos right in saying there was 'only a sprinkling' of money mentioned.

Quite clearly money was not the most important issue here. It had more to do with an experienced and shrewd coach making an appeal to a young player based on things like emotion, tradition and loyalty.

If money was the number one factor, then Blumfield would be a Swan or Magpie now - no doubt about it.

It's all just media crap. Anything to write a story. Every year they go about all of these good players maybe moving. They never do.

Already I've heard Gehrig, Morrison, Braun, Everitt, Leppitsch, Stafford, Saddington and N.Stevens will be playing at Collingwood next year.

It's all bullshit.

here here jaffa

I get sick to bloody death of all the stupid player trade rumours.

I see Koutafidis has been linked to the Swans YET AGAIN. The press had a field day with this one in 1994 and now the story has been recycled. By who ? - the bluddy newspapers thats who.

Get it right you hacks - Kouta is not, repeat not getting traded to Sydney, or anywhere else for that matter. Its a media beat up thats so gormless it beggars belief.

I guess the public are even dumber for falling for this kind of stuff, year in year out.

I have heard that Leppa wants to stay at brisbane but that he hasn't signed a thing.
also they have heaps out of contract, and none have re-signed yet. including Voss, Molloy, Bradshaw

Is that one about Hay wanting to join Judge still hanging around? Please? Even it that was the only thing he (KJ) did for us it would still be worthwhile
wink.gif

Don't think we'll lose Morrison or Braun. Gehrig is another prospect

One of the main reasons is the unfair go he gets from the media & Eagles supporters. Would it really be any better at Collingwood?

I'd heard Leppitch was heading for the Saints.

Gehrig in the interview at the AFL site said he hadn't yet decided whether he wanted to stay, sounds like someone leaving to me.

Don't know how Stafford and Saddington would get to Collingwood seeing as they both have longterm contracts Stafford to end 2002.

Most of these rumours are just to boost the value of player contracts.

It is rare for good players who are in form to shift clubs.

Oh- and is that true about them decreasing squad sizes again? If so it's ridiculous, and goes against the AFL's supposed focus on player development.
Pay the players less, but have more of them! Remember when it was 52?

I know I keep going back to my club, but this has been our situation this year-
squad - 42
rookies - 4 (that's standard)
retirees - 1
seriously injured - at least 12 (out for a number of weeks, not necessarily at the same time though)
Now, that leaves 29 players to choose our 22 from each week.
But/ 11 of these had not played a game before this year. Another 3 debuted last year. These kids should be being slowly developed, playing in the Westar league, then earning their place in the team rather than holding down (or attempting to anyway) key positions! I know we've a rough year, but there should be room to move when it comes to a player taking time to properly recover from injury. They shouldn't have to rush back, only to again break down.

I think it sux that money is getting in the way of these kids getting a fair go, but I'll get off the soapbox now.....

The only "rumours" I have heard have been Moorcroft to the Saints/Pies and Prior to either the Hawks or Dees.
Pub gossip both, but from a pub in Mt.Alexander rd just around the corner from Napier st

Actually I can see these would be the types that the Dons could lose, would hurt their depth a little, but would also free up the salary cap. Maybe other jobbers like Fraser/Wallis/ might retire and Bewick too (though he aint a jobber)

Havent got anything on the Hawks, except some stirrer at the official forum keeps putting Chicks name up. Well this guy deserves (Chick) All Australian this year, if we were to lose him I reckon the club may as well just give itself up.

Leppa is re-signing with Brisbane. He has officially rejected any other offers and just the normal "ironing out" of administratvie style issues is left to do. He actually even quipped that maybe he should have the "kisssing the grannies at the airport" banned in his new contract!

Molloy has another year to go on his contract. Champion is out of contract this year. Freo has shown more than a passing interest in Bradshaw since they visited the Gabba last year (when freo officials were overheard talking about him).

Voss is out of contract. But the only way he would leave Brisbane would be a package deal where he and his brother went to another club together with certainty of playing in a grand final together. Can't really see that one happening either.

I agree with Dan 24.

It would be misleading to claim that there is no player loyalty in the AFL. Living in Canberra, where I have the opportunity to examine the dealings regarding out of contract players in the NRL, only serves to confirm this.

There is little player regulation in the NRL; apart from a very generous salary cap and a farcial rule known as the "ant-tampering" deadline, which forbides clubs negotiating with opposition players before a certain date, there are no mechanisms to control the flow of players. There is no external draft or trading regime.

Due to this, club turnover is high with players switching to a different club every time they sign a new contract. There is also the farcial situation of players signing with other clubs before the season in over and coaches and administrators think nothing of it!!

If AFL players are disloyal, then what would you call that???

J2!!!

Just because a player has re-signed doesn't mean they will stay. Yes it is likely but the club may still trade them. Just as players don't need to be out of contract to be traded.

Don and everyone else. I believe Gherig is staying because he has just moved into his new home in City Beach. It seems like someone who is deciding to settle down and stay west.

I have heard another one just last night.

It concerns Geelong, so most of you couldn't care less.

Barry Stoneham to not play a senior game again and will play out the remainder of the year in the reserves.

Injury plagued Paul Lynch will shortly announce his retirement from the game, what a waste of such a talent.

This rumor came up a while ago but died down now because he became injured and was out of the spotlight. Wirripunda to Collingwood, it better not happen because i think hes the best back Pocket in the comp. On Freo, im an eagles fan so theres obviously hatred there for the best team in Perth but when they play against anyone but WCE i find myself barracking for them. Now we all know how bad Freo is at giving away amazingly talented players, and looking at there loss to Geelong on the weekend if they decide not to let any of there kids go watch freo to become a real power within 3 years. Scary isnt it.
smile.gif

2000 the year of the Eagle

Hmmm, now it's Wirripunda also. I seem to recall someone saying Jakovich was on his way as well.

It's certainly going to be interesting to see how Colingwood manage to secure Gehrig, Morrison, Braun, Wirripunda and Jakovich.

I'm not sure in anyone has noticed this, but I don't think there is that much at Collingwood that WCE would want.

As I said earlier, it's all bullshit.
