Hale is 30 next year. He's not a great tap ruck, but he's very good at getting around the ground. The same could be accurately said about McEvoy. Bailey was the tap ruck, Longer is a tap ruck.

If the Hawks are going for like for like replacement of their rucks then Longer would be firmly in the frame. The question is are the hawks after like for like replacements? If so, will they part with their Buddy compensation for him?

I'm pretty sure we would give up our Buddy compensation for Longer. The intention is to play Hale as a forward next year with McEvoy and Longer as ruckman, if we are able to land Longer. Hale is getting on and Franklin has obviously left a void up there. If you don't get a better deal than our compo pick, I think Longer will be a hawk next year. St Kilda seem keen to stockpile draft picks so I doubt they will chase him, plus they seem keen to develop Hickey as a 1st ruck.

The Saints's list manager on TWR this morning was pretty clear they hadn't spoken to Billy, but when quizzed about Trent West and a few other rucks opted for non answers, indicating they may in fact be interested. Not definite that Saintg aren't into Billy, but certainly leading.

Dont really see the sense in Saints trading for Longer with Hickey already there. If anything they might go for a Jolly/West to help Hickey shoulder the load throughout the season and give him a rest from time to time.

Say the Buddy compensation is a mid first round selection (which it seems it will be), so pick 11. In your opinion, would that be suitable for the Longer trade?

Western Bulldogs
hey guys, sorry to intrude, but what do you make of this article from the afl website?
It's caused some division on the bulldogs board, I'm curious of the lions perspective.

Lions consider bid for Bulldog Grant
Out-of-contract Western Bulldogs forward Jarrad Grant could be traded to the Brisbane Lions as part of a deal involving Sam Docherty, Fairfax Media reports.
Grant revived his career with a late-season form surge and has been offered a new one-year contract to stay with the Bulldogs, a deal that is believed to feature an incentive clause that would trigger a second season.
But the 24-year-old is seeking a non-conditional two-year contract.
A sticking point could be Docherty's preference for a trade to Carlton, while Essendon has also shown interest in the teenager, who is keen to return to his native Victoria.

According to the hawks they were trying to get a better pick for the Longer deal, obviously via savage to saints, when the saints floated the Mcenvoy trade. Nothing changes, Hawks would still have to come up with a better pick. Don't think they are that desperate for Longer anymore.

Where are you getting this from?
COMPENSATION
A club that has a net loss of players transferring to/from other clubs as free agents in one transfer period is entitled to compensation via National Draft picks allocated by the AFL.
The compensation formula produces a points rating for players based on:
1. The new contract of the free agent;
2. The age of the free agent.
Draft picks are allocated to clubs based on the net total points for free agents lost and gained during the transfer period.
Draft picks will be allocated to one of five places:
• 1st round
• end of 1st round
• 2nd round
• end of 2nd round
• 3rd round
In applying the formula, an expert committee reviews the formula outcomes. The committee has the power to recommend alternative outcomes to GM – Football Operations where the formula produces a materially anomalous result.

So one would think that Hawthorn would be eligible for 1st round (I am assuming Mid 1st round), which they can on trade for Longer. Fingers crossed.

Unless they have changed the rules it would be as notting18 said... the pick directly behind their first round pick .. where the AFL deemed them to finished on the ladder
