Noticed as part of another post that many supporters were suggesting Lance and Houla as trades for next season. Why would they be mentioned and Stevens not mentioned. Surely if we are looking at trading someone in the 25-27 y/o group with a big rep and as such good pulling power then he must be the man.

His rep is bigger than Houla's yet in my opinion he has not got no more natural ability. Further than this he has the Campo victim mentality and rarely picks up a man. He would gain us a higher draft pick than Ryan yet has less potential to give us good service for the next 5 years. In my mind Ryan is a more solid personality and is more likely to listen, learn and evolve than would Nick.

Lance is having a great season and will have value and a high rep by seasons end. However unlike Nick his worth equals his rep and his attitude is more mature. Further whilst Lance's body may only hold up for another 2-3 years I believe Nick will hit 28 or 29 in very similar shape to Campo.

There is no way Carlton would look at trading Stevens. Firstly, he is contracted for another year and I would think most clubs (except for Collingwood) would baulk at the paying a portion of the contract.

Secondly, I believe he will be offered the captaincy at the end of the year. This is very likely going to be Kouta's last year and imo Nick deserves to be given the job.

Thirdly, he we were to trade him, this would put enormous pressure on our kids to really step up next year. Guys like Houlihan, Simpson, Walker, Bentick, Carrazzo, Murphy and Russell. We need some experience in there along with Scotland to help the young kids through their development phase.

There is no way Stevens will not be wearing Navy Blue next year.

i just can't imagine how we could name him as our captain...maybe there's a lot more to him than what he shows on the field?

I really think alot of Carlton supporters treat Nick Stevens unfairly. Whilst I agree that his body language on the field can look bad at times, he really is the general of our midfield, and without him, we'd be a worse side because of it.

Only my opinion, but he is the logical choice for captaincy of our club after Kouta retires.

I'd be open to trading Deluca, Teague or Sporn but that's the extent to which I'd go this year and only if it was in exchange for a young Victorian Ruckman returning home like Ivan Maric, Ryan Willits, Fabian Deluca or John Meeson.

I'd also consider trading Scotland if another club initiated the move with a reasonable offer.

No trading for tradings sake this year... unless a player wants out.

IMO our days of heavy trades are gone.

I can only see us trading away a player if they seriously want out; are on the extreme fringe or we get a ridiculous offer for them.
and
i can only see us trading in 1 maybe 2 recycled players a year to fill a specific gap in our list- saddington, mclaren & french.

I reckon if any other club is willing to offer us anything for those 3 I'd take it. I don't know that anyone will though. Scotland would be worth very little too (unless his form & consistecy improve).

From what Smorgon's saying, I doubt we'll be taking any recycled players again- certainly not for any early picks.

Gone are the days of trading a dud for either a good draft pick or a good player. All clubs are alot more cagey than what they were years ago.

I don't want Carlton to trade just for the sake of trading (ala Kangaroos it seems). We need to invest our short-term future in the kids. They will lead us back up the ladder.

Haven't we learnt our lessons (hard ones at that!) from the past in regard to trading.

Handling a football club list is a balancing act. You need experience and youth. Speed and in & under-types. The list goes on.

Wait till round 15 before calling for changes. There is plenty of water to flow under the bridge first.

We need kids
We want kids
The future is kids

Keep all of our draft picks for starters and handle the playing personnel we currently have properly first then think about possible trades later in the year when form, injuries, currency, etc can be valued. Possible being the operative word.

And yet we still keep trading for recycled duds like Longmuir and Chambers, and the jury's still out on Saddington.
There's no harm in trading for a couple of recycled players if they are any good, but clearly most of hte one's we've picked up under Pagan have been duds.

picking up recycled players is always going to be hit and miss, just like picking players in the draft. not all our recycled players have been duds.
we also need to look at the players we got rid.

I also agree we need to move away from picking up too many recycled players.

Agree with Gumpy that this thread is premature. I was actually reacting to comments made on another thread that raised Whitnall and Houla as trades.

Really hope that Stevens hits his straps and becomes captaincy type material as suggested by hugebluesfan. However on his performances to date I dont believe he has exhibited anywhere near the mental toughness to be a good role model as skipper.

He certainly has the ability and also has the charisma. However thus far most of his emotional energy has gone towards Campo type wingeing. If he focassed his energy towards being in the moment and competing at 100% capacity then he could be our next captain.

At this stage would much prefer Whitnall as next years captain unless Kouta has a form reversal. If he does keep him as captain and allow others like Waite to show their hand.

I totally agree. But I also think Larnce should be our next Captain. He is our most valuable player, and the only player in our whole list with a footy brain, besides young Murphy. I think our team should be out there developing their footy BRAINS instead of their bodies. Then we will win alot more games.

Untill stevo can handle any kind of tag and produce good results he cant be captain.... Id love kouta to hand it over to lance (as chf) to be skipper for 5 years then murph or walker to step up and hold up the cups:D
