What do people think about Lewis Johnston from the Crows? Haven't heard any news in regards to him as a trade target, but I've seen a few SANFL games locally this year and he could definitely be a value type trade or possibly late draft pick if he is delisted. Has played as a forward in the Crows senior team but has been shifted into defence in the reserves and seems a likely type. 23 years old, 193cm. Beautiful kick of the footy. Could be a handy swing man 3rd tall type that would be an upgrade on a White or McInnes type. Honestly, his foot skills really appeal and maybe if he's given an extended run in our seniors could develop into a good player.

Crows fans want him delisted. Apparently they're trying to make him into a defender because he's no good as a forward. You'd have to get him for absolute peanuts.

I read that on their board too, and it surprises me a bit. The SANFL games I've seen first hand he's looked a good mover. I'm sure if we targeted him it would be for peanuts but could be a steal in the Docherty and Everitt mould in terms of value added to our structure and flexibility. Malthouse would like his versatility.

Not an upgrade on White currently, but definitely more potential upside in my opinion.

Hendo is an important part of our future. I'm all for strengthening our list through a combination of trade, draft, and free agency. However, we can't afford to trade a player of his quality in a position where we lack depth and quality as it is.

Look at St Kilda for example.. They were bold in trading McEvoy but could afford that luxury because they had two young rucks in Longer and Hickey to work with. We don't have that luxury with Hendo.

Besides, no way GWS would give up Boyd and their first pick for Hendo alone.

How can people say the midfield needs to be fixed first?

We've been screaming for a kpf since Fev and quality kpf are difficult to come by. Quality midfielders are in almost every draft.

When a quality KPF is there to be picked you choose him first.

There will be another midfielder next year and probably another one coming out of contract next year.
I think it's more that across the league as whole there's only a handful of genuine star KPF, even Buddy, Cloke and Tippett (3 of the best) have their share of knockers for inconsistency etc, so the odds of fixing our deplorable midfield stocks are better at least in the short term.
I don't think anyone would say no to landing a Tredrea style KPF if there was one in the draft, it's just that those sorts of players are few and far between.

It's also interesting reading that we should trade Hendo for Boyd etc. given Boyd hasn't proven himself capable of leading a forward line any more than Henderson has, he's a promising kid but he's quietly reaching mythical status..

Waite is close to retiring. Henderson is good but not a dominating forward who copes with multiple opponents, needs a big partner to take the main forward, but he's very dangerous and looms as our number one tall option in the near future. Casboult is a role player, doubt he'll be a dominant match winning forward who can change the results of games, he is currently not taking the pressure off Waite as defenders are beating him one on one without the need for a player to drop in front of him. Watson is a project.

We really cant afford to lose Henderson, if we get Boyd and lose Henderson Boyd would pretty soon become the only good target up forward and the opposition would maul him. Also why we need Waite because Waite does warrant double teaming and he takes a lot of the heat off the other tall forwards. It would be very important for Henderson and for Boyd's development to make sure Henderson and Waite Remain on our list.

How I think it'll work out...

Hypothetical trade scenarios:
1.
OUT: Pick 5 & Casboult to St Kilda/Melbourne
IN: Pick 1

2.
OUT: Pick 1, & Garlett or Mclean or Robinson to GWS
IN: Boyd and Pick 39

Next Trade...
1.
OUT: Warnock and Pick 21
IN: Pick 19 (For example)
Clears out the salary cap and upgrades a pick, would need to find a replacement ruckman but they really are a dime a dozen.

2.
OUT: Pick 19 & Mclean or Robinson or Lucas
IN: Pick 15 (for example)

OR

OUT: Pick 19 and Garlett and/or Lucas to West Coast
IN: Pick 9

TOTALS:
IN: Boyd, Pick 15, Pick 39,
OR
IN: Boyd, Pick 9, Pick 39

OUT: Pick 5, Pick 21, Casboult, Garlett, Warnock, (Mclean/Robinson/Lucas)

I don't think we have any real trade ammunition to make direct trades. What we have are handy mature players who would fill a hole/role at another club. Players they would take if they only had to shuffle down the draft a little to get them. That and we have highish draft picks.

Upgrade picks, trade them on, use players we have to upgrade what picks we have left. One way of cleaning out the list/cap space and bringing in quality young players, while not having to trade our guns for their guns. Also a sneaky little way of possible getting back into the first round.

Going to lose a few players you'd like to keep but you replace them with the gun you recruit, our up and comers (Graham/Cripps etc) and free agents (Higgins) who we can now easily afford due to trading out a few senior players.

nor do we start with pick 21?

Good effort gbatman but those Mclean/Garlett/Robinson/Warnock types will not help upgrade us to getting first round picks. Best we could hope for is our 3rd or 4th picks to be upgraded by a few spots or even one round at best. Which can be handy.

I think we need to build similar to "the Geelong model" for prolonged success and go to the draft (i know its not as exciting, but we should put trust in our recruiting department). Getting as much youth and skillful leader types and not burning picks should be the moto. No doubt if players like Doc become available and Everitt to an extent, we should go after these types.

Boyd is exciting but if we are to give up an early pick + a player, are we not putting ourselves further behind?
Boyd is a fair way off and I think it would be best for us to go after him next year when he is out of contract and we can have the trade more on our terms.

If we believe Cas is at his best or will only improve a little, maybe we try and offload him to a club like St Kilda, Melbourne or GWS for their early second pick (21/22/23 or Jaksch)? We know he wont get us a first round pick unless maybe the Hawks throw their hat into the ring for him and offer up maybe pick 19?

We should hang onto our first pick (5/6/7) and draft best available mid (unless one of the big guys fall to us).

We should send Cas hopefully to get us either a late pick in the first or early pick in the second. We may have to throw in our 4th or better to get a pick that high.

I just very much doubt Cas and our first will get us pick 1 or 2 and I am more inclined to want to get an early 2nd for him with the moto of bringing in as much youth as possible.
We maybe able to send Cas to GWS along with our 2nd (26) for their 2 picks 20 and 22?

There will be really good players sitting between 20-35 we should aim to get as many picks in this bracket as we can.

Here we go again , swapping unwanted players from the 14th ranked team for better players from better teams or their better draft picks ...

Reality please people !!
Please explain how this isn't exactly what we did last year and exactly what every club aims to do every trade period.
