Agree Surrey. I have no problem with free agency I just think the compensation criteria/system is flawed. Pick can't be linked to your ladder position.
Free agency compensation picks should be in a separate pool... like the PSD. The national draft is for teams finishing at the bottom of the ladder to top up with some quality picks.

If Melbourne gets their request of a priority pick as well as the compensation pick, they could end up getting 3 picks in a row at the sharp end of round 1 picks.

Why should they benefit from being that shit...

They already got denied their priority pick, which means they'll end up with pick three for Frawley. It's a difficult situation, because loosing Frawley would compeletely suck for Melbourne supporters and even pick #1 isn't going to replace that in the short term. AFL is giving them an extra long term benefit for short term pain, I don't think that's the right solution.

I always thought that you should lose whatever pick the other club is compensated with. E.g, hawks draft frawley he is considered a first round compensation pick, hawks lose their first. I also think free agency is a load of bullshit, if you want to leave to earn more money put a price on your head and enter the PSD, you don't get to pick your club on draft day either - deal with it.

I like the PSD... it's for delisted or out of contract players who want to test the market and/or get to a new club.

If the club they want to get to can come up with the money to pay for the contract that the players put on their heads, then they get to where they want to go... otherwise, some other club can jump in and hijack the deal... like we did with Nick Stevens. All player contracts should expire the day after the PSD. They shouldnt be allowed to go into the national draft to try and get where they are going.

The whole point of FA is to give players control over there careers just like any other profession. When it was pitched to the AFL it was sold as helping fringe players leave successful clubs for more opportunity, the reality of this is a long way from that and it's clear that is not happening.

What the solution is I am not so sure, but perhaps the clubs or an independent body need to rank a players worth in the draft, lets say with Buddy, he is worth a top 5 pick so only clubs who have the first 5 picks can bid for Buddy, unless Sydney were able to trade into the top 5 they would miss out on him, and Hawks would receive the top 5 pick of compo.

With Frawley, he is considered a pick 20-30 pick, so any club could get Frawley and Melbourne get that compensation pick. This way the player still gets to choose, but clubs are also compensated for there worth and also lose that pick.

I love this idea that the club picking them up pays the price - no extra draft picks are added, which as Mick says punishes all other clubs. Make the receiving club give up the appropriate pick then the losing club gets cap space. Win win and doesn't restrict players going to club of choice - just makes them second guess whether they can afford it - not just a big pay packet.

If you cant retain your players then you should receive nothing for them.

Those who finish in the top 4 must submit an application to the AFL commission and explain why they should be allowed to add anyone through free agency.

Players previously lost to FA may form part of your application to be considered by the AFL before granting that particular club permission to get involved in the FA process.
Again, why are we punishing good teams? If they have the cap space (Sydney excluded), why shouldn't they be allowed to go get whoever they want?

Agree. Use Mitch Clark and Geelong. A large portion of this has to come down to the success of the club and players wanting success. You have to build that respect within the league and the old adage - 'build it and they will come' applies.

Imagine if MEL or even RICH. Had got their drafting strategies right, we could have a completely different playing field in some respects. RICH is the big one. Insert Franklin into that lineup from day one instead of the squib they picked and what do you have? More infield success and more players looking to come. Ourselves, are a classic example too. I loved the 2010 draft when it happened, but alas we only have 1 player left from our top 4 picks. Imagine if a spine of McInnes/McCarthy/Murphy/Mitchell/Watson had come to fruition???

GEEL will get richer with Clark, but it pushes a kid like Kersten out, who I would love. Swings and roundabouts. You just have to make your club a place that people want to come. Wasn't that far back that the Top 8 clubs this season where struggling. Teams like MEL and WB just need to do it better and so do we.

Anyone else see the article on Matthew Spanos from SA. Was overlooked as a undersized FF at his draft year but Doggies got him in the Rookie draft. About 190-192 I remember but slight. Didn't ladt long and went home.

This year for Norwood, they threw him in the midfield and apparently he starred in the GF. Has been invited to the combine by at least 6 clubs. Big mid, worth a look? Any SA posters have any mail on him.

Was he homesick or delisted?

No I agree Jatz, was just trying to throw out some other potential thought process from the discussions above on how FA could look in the future if it becomes a problem for the AFL.

FA was never about equalisation. It was brought in for players. As many have said, can't punish clubs for their excellent operation; and reward other clubs' mismanagement.

Hawks, swans, cats get criticised unfairly for landing FAs however this is a reflection of how well they are ran. Also common denominator is the amount of young talent coming through at each club. It's frightening how much talent are in Box Hill that can't get a game as yet

Jason Tutt - a 177cm speedy forward who has good skills... reports are that a Victorian club has made an offer... could that be us?

Certainly fills a need, and at 23 he's in the right age bracket. Maybe we could somehow snag Jones and Tutt for our 3rd and Lucas/Garlett?

Lose Eddie to free agency, trade Jeffy, delist Ellard?

if he can't cement a place at the Bulldogs, should we chase him?

If only to have depth in that position. He's done some good things, and won a flag with Williamstown this year - just another of those guys on the outer at the kennell for whatever reason. Doesn't mean they aint quality...

Yep, we should absolutely be targeting the 20-23 year olds who will find it harder to get game time and be paid a fair wage from all those clubs topping up... Swans, PA, North, Cats and Hawks.
