I think you are under-rating Thomas a fair bit there. But also not taking into account there are probably no other players in the AFL that are of his quality or better and are also willing to go to the Gold Coast.

But as I said, if you don’t take into account that factor, what you proposed is pretty much what I stated (3rd vs 2nd going back). But in reality having a player willing to go to the Gold Coast has huge value. We paid 2 firsts for a 29 year old Gibbs after all.
No, you are massively over-rating Thomas if you think he is worth giving up a prime pick #3. That's just madness!

Unless you are trolling I just stated a trade for pick 3 the same as you have except a 3rd going back instead of a 2nd, so better for GC than yours.

The 16+Thomas trade is like the two firsts for a 29 year old Gibbs trade. The tax that unattractive clubs have to pay when a good player finally actually wants to go there. It is there, it has nothing to do with over-rating Thomas or Gibbs or Weller.

You are still missing the point.

You don't give up a gun at #3 for an ok player & a late 1st rounder, when you already have a stack of good picks.

GC are apparently after the twins, so would want to keep 2 decent top 10 picks.

Giving 1 up for Thomas is just madness.

Whats the chances GC match FA offer for Lynch. I know pick 3 compo makes sense but I reckon they could take a stand and force a trade.

AFL wont like last years premiers taking a player on more than 1 mil from a bottom club.

But AFL also own GC and might just tell them to take compo.

Will be interesting

Not that it’s big news but I don’t think Jake Kelly will be at the club next year from what I have heard
Rumours he wants to head back to Melbourne.

Would be a good time to trade him as imo doesn't have more upside.

Thomas & pick #16 ish is worse than compo pick #3.

If GC hang out for more than #3, then they will probably want next year's 1st rounder involved in the trade too, as Pies 2nd pick this year won't be til around #46.
If I was GC, I'd run the risk that he heads to the draft and redraft him if Carlton don't get him. Especially if Richmond or Collingwood are the teams he wants to go to.

Take that! And if he doesn't play, sue for breach of contract

Oy problem is that if they do that they miss the pick 3 compo pick AND they have to use their 1st round pick 2 to guarantee they get him as their WCE pick might be after hawthorn's and collingwood's pick..but they can certainly use that threat in negotiations

He would probably go to the PS draft. They don't need pick 3 anyway, they want players

Could the AFL give Gold Coast 2 compensation picks for Lynch? Say the pick after their own first rounder pick 3 and a mid first round pick eg Pick 10

The AFL can't just let GC captain and best player walk to the premiers and leave the dumpster fire that is GC in even more of a mess.

Exactly, he's actually smart to go now, cause he's probably at the peak of his demand. He's played for almost 2 straight seasons without omission, young guys like Milera, Doedee, McPherson showing substantially more promise will inevitably take his spot next year and drive it down.

If he wants to stay starting 22 next year and potentially get a OK payday then its definitely going to be for another club. Which club, well CFC and the WB have had the most points against this season, so a lock down, mid sized defender with good run would fit into both those clubs pretty well. But I daresay he has his eyes set on a Collingwood homecoming.

Realistically what would he be worth. Played best 22 this year and a good chunk last year. Mid to late 2nd?

In a year like this with draft picks being at a premium I daresay he might be worth less then what we would want for him for a straight trade. But he could be the steak knives in a pick swap scenario. For example moving from our pick 20 to Collingwoods first pick (approx 17) to get us back in the 1st round.

Doesn't sound like much, but pushing that pick back into 1st round gives us a much more enticing trade piece for other trades.

Their first this year + first next year + a player?..

If they simply settle for pick 3 and that will pretty much restrict them from getting anything more than one untried yet potentially great player.. won’t be able to use their mountains of cash to chase any FRee agents because that could threaten their lynch compo pick...

And if they don’t match for lynch.... and he goes to the tigers or Collingwood on a deal less than a million a year?... what if he’s told either of those clubs that he’s not after big dollars and 800k a year will keep him happy and he also doesn’t want to come in and instantly being one of their highest paid players like Dangerfield did when he went to Geelong ..

Compo pick may end up end of first round...

I think suns may match.

Gee.. great detailed rebuttal..

If you couldn’t be bothered why even respond?

Anyway, my justifications;

Their first this year + first next year + a player?..

Lynch is definately worth two firsts... why not demand an average player too?... especially if it’s the tigers who have some pretty good players that can’t get a game..

If they simply settle for pick 3 and that will pretty much restrict them from getting anything more than one untried yet potentially great player.. won’t be able to use their mountains of cash to chase any FRee agents because that could threaten their lynch compo pick...

What doesn’t make sense in this sentence Hammond?

And if they don’t match for lynch.... and he goes to the tigers or Collingwood on a deal less than a million a year?... what if he’s told either of those clubs that he’s not after big dollars and 800k a year will keep him happy and he also doesn’t want to come in and instantly being one of their highest paid players like Dangerfield did when he went to Geelong ..

Compo pick may end up end of first round...

Compo pick is based on the size of the contract the FA gets is it not?... so if he is only going to a vic team on 800k because that’s what he requests then the “pick 3” compo pick will definately be at risk

I think suns may match.

Just my opinion... this is, after all, an opinion site..
