I personally dont think they land Walsh at pick 5. They could very well trade up with the Gold Coast, or even the Saints. But I dont think that both the Saints and Carlton will pass on Walsh. Its possible if Carlton take Luko, GC take the Kings and St Kilda takes Smith. But Walsh is also being talked about as being a generational mid. I dont think the Saints can risk passing on him.

So then Brisbane will be looking at Smith and Rankine. Will they go down the Nathan Buckley path again with Rankine? My view is they are already loaded with talent and now need to make a run at finals. JJ will be a big, experienced body that will benefit Hipwood. But then instead of Smith, they still get a top 12 player, who could turn out better than Smith anyway. They could just take Roughead and Smith mind you. The latter would be my plan A. But JJ and pick 12 would give them a pretty good shot of making the top 8 and the Lions as a club need that to get the fans on board again.
You've got Brisbane finishing above Saints??

I see both teams winning 1 more game each for the year. Brisbane to beat GCS at Metricon, Saints to beat Carlton this week. Saints actually have a better chance of an upset late in the season, with a string of games at Etihad vs the likes of Hawks/Bombers/North.

Brisbane should have 4, and will probably have to work with GC to make sure they land Walsh, which shouldn't be hard.

I think you're going to find Brisbane being very much again giving up their chance at landing Sam Walsh, especially because he is a Brisbane and would be one of the very few talents who would actually 'want' to play for the club.
Not what I'm hearing from my connections to several of the local lads drafted to the Lions in recent times, they are now a close knit bunch and they're are all buying in to what Chris Fagan and David Noble are selling believing the club is now heading in the right direction both on and off field. Personally I wouldn't be overly surprised if they trade down to get two high end picks and target Cam Rayner's best mate Curtis Taylor with one of those picks, a highly talented mid/forward himself.

I just looked at the draw again, I thought they played each other. Brisbane would have to beat NM at the Gabba (or us). I think they are capable of beating North, but yeah, your right, unlikely. I think I need to go back and edit about 100 posts :)

Any chance they look for a senior player? I think the smartest thing they have done is bring in Hodge, but he will be 35 next year.

Depending on who gets the pick there is a chance Rankine is the first player chosen .

Absolute star players who rise to the occasion are truly few and far between . Hird , Mcleod , Ablett , Dusty , S.Burgoyne , Danger , Cyril , Akermanis , Swan had it in his own way there are a few others ... they not only win you lots of footy matches but they own the big stage , win flags and own norms .
Rankine has that innate and very rare gift to soak in the pressure and take his game to levels not many players can get .

Jack Lukosius has something special and is a generational talent , it is a dream to have both but if we can get one of them at least with a Rozee or Hately then it is a win . If we get neither then i want Hately and Rozee to base the rest of the draft around .
Time to be bold and it is sure to be the most interesting draft as a fan in Crows history .

Best case scenario is that we don't stretch for Lukosius and we somehow get Rankine , Hately and Rozee or 2 of them and just let Jack know we are bringing him home as soon as is possible . 2 years to develop somewhere whilst Fog grows into his role and our old forwards fade into the night .

Wouldn't surprise me to see Eddie go back to Carlton tbh. He clearly has a lot of love for the club, and he's been below his usual standards. Not saying he will, and I'm not saying I want him to, but it wouldn't surprise me.

No. I dont think we will see any adventurous moves by the club. I doubt Roughead would come to Adelaide anyway. He is a pretty good player when he is on song.

I am with you on Preuss though. Dont think Jacobs has another full season of his best football in him. We were always looking at 2019 as having a chance IF Eddie, Tex & Sauce in particular hadn't hit the wall. I feel like Sauce is the one that is going to hit and it could cost us a flag. We dont have anyone else and you need that level of influence from a ruckman if you are going to be the best. You can carry lesser players in some positions, but you can't get smashed in the ruck.
It's not even about being adventurous. We've put ourselves in a position that we won't be able to trade JJ even if we wanted too.

A lot of security, last contract, next career just about sorted and is most likely very settled here. Why would he have any desire to leave?

Plus he's probably having his best season.

I'd like to keep Eddy for one more season, but i'd be open to it if we think his best is past him.
Not a chance.

You don't sign a heart and soul bloke like Sloane just to let another one leave.

Slim pickings for pressure forwards there. Puopolo plays that role but not sure now is the time.

Draft or trade I guess...

If carlton want a player that will be there at 4 it does. They are keen on walsh and the king bros. One of them will be there at 4.
Pick 1 is most probably the highest valuable commodity in football, Carlton wouldn't even trade it for Judd.

Pretty sure it's only ever been traded once in history when Freo gave it to Hawthorn for Croad and McPharline.

Carlton would be a laughing stock if it traded Pick 1 for Atkins and a pick Swap, not even Freo would have touched that deal back when they were making those diabolical trades in the mid to late 90s.

Freo also still had pick 4 that year when the VFL gave out priotity picks to any club with less than 4 wins.

I just can’t see us getting this pick off Carlton.

How about just for kicks “Westhoff”, no more send Westhoff to the backlines for Kenny to rely on. :)
