It's a great observation. We all hit ceilings. Is 5 years the ceiling indicator? I'd most likely agree. If we look at Houston, he's been improving year on year. DBJ was improving year on year and has stayed the same 18 and 19. So then it becomes is the 18-19 version enough.

He has only played 32 games in those 5 years though. Dont think you have hit your ceiling after 32 games.
Just been unable to get his body right. If we get his body right and he is able to put together a run of uninterrupted games. Dont think he is anywhere near his ceiling.

All comes down to if his body is shot or not. at 22/23yrs old, you wouldn't think so.

Think Trengove, Toumpas or Freeman. Got fit and still great footballers but lost the tools that made them excellent and AFL 22 worthy. My concern is that Nakia has lost that elite pace and agility that made him so good. Without that speed, does he have the tools to make it?

yeah thats a fair call.

It could go either way.
Still think its worth a shot as long as we dont go crazy with the amount of years and $$$.

It's his fifth year in the system. What you see is what you get with Cockatoo.

Edit: I'll add that he's the same as Impey - the idea hasn't been matched by reality. They're both the same player now as they were when they were drafted. There's no reason at all to expect further development.
I tend to look more at age than years in the system, Schulz took a solid 7 years to develop properly. Cockatoo has had about 30 odd games roughly. If we had to give a first rounder or something like that no way in hell, but if we could get him for less I'd definitely love to see Port have a crack.

As I said in another post, it's not so much about the age/experience than the fact that I haven't seen any development in his game since he was drafted. I don't care that he hasn't hit his potential yet, I just want to see him (or any player) making steps towards it. While I haven't watched Cockatoo particularly closely, I've not seen anything to suggest he's really developing.

It's hard to develop your game when you aren't playing. In his afl career, Nakia has never played more than six games of afl in a row. He was drafted off a couple of games on potential. He played 1 and a half games last year and none this year. He has tended to be rushed back into the side post injury and it hasn't worked. It's hard to be the final product if you don't play. Maybe his body isn't cut out to play afl but there is little cost in give away nakia. I'd love to see what he does if he actually plays some football. Afl needs more fun players.

.... Hammer is probably the key example from Port in that regard. He's only hit that consistency of performance in his last 2 maybe 3 years, but each year you could see him adding elements to his game like contested ball, lowering his eyes ...
Ah yes but is he lowering his eyes on the fat side while running on top of the grass? I mean he very well could be as I don't know what any of those things mean.

Impey is a good and relevant comparison. I think the main difference is that Cockatoo is more natural forward. If fit, even without any notable improvement, he probably kicks a goal a game and provides consistent pressure, things Impey could never do.

But you are right that we’d be banking on improving both fitness and output.

I’m more concerned that nakia can’t find the ball than his inability to get on the park.

One we have a history of fixing and the other we don’t

Port are probably aware of Cockatoo.

Is the draft looking like 2 picks and one upgrade?
Haven't seen anything that suggests lost any pace? He's been playing forward of centre?
Not generally a high possession part of the ground?
Seems a genuinely terrific kid as we noted before he was drafted.
Not really seeing a down side?
