The problem with these massive front ended deals is that they effectively work as a signing bonus to spark the interest of players.

Players/managers eyes light up when they see that a $450k player can earn $800k in one season (even if they earn less the following years), their managers/clubs entice them by selling to them that they can bank that $800k at the same marginal tax rate, and bank/invest/spend earlier than they could otherwise.

Same marginally yes but lose 47% of the extra $350k on top of that instantly
So $160k roughly.

I dont understand these contract shenanigans.

Dougal is contracted for another three years. If another club randomly offers dougal a larger contract does this mean the club has to renegotiate? If so, what's the point of a contract?

Can renegotiate if you like, but it’s not mandatory. Clubland these days are all about player welfare and wellbeing so more often than not - the contracts aren’t worth much as no club wants to keep a (now disgruntled) player against their will ... particularly when they know they are being impacted financially/lifestyle wise.

That being said, the leverage is with the club to work a deal so if they really wanted to drive the point home: the player can be retained and forced to stay under said contract.

I also don't understand why port moved $ from boak, gray, whoever from this year till next? Does it mean the club wants to spend less than 95% of the salary cap next year but appear to pay the 95?%?

I’m not exactly sure on this one.

I know that some of the longer term deals that were signed a few years ago have hamstrung the club in a hot market, hence the re-working of some of them lately.

The smarter clubs get around this with flexible ASA arrangements.

Yeah but why would Port agree to it and seriously what is the point of contracts any more?
Surely we just say no way and that is the end of the story?
We’re Port Adelaide though, we only let long contracts disadvantage us, because we’re spineless nice guys

Calling for Dougal to play forward was more about having any tall forward in the team rather than Dougal being a superstar at it.

In the absence of Dixon, I've always been pro Frampton and then Marshall and then Dougal. Also preferably two at a time.

Dougal forward made sense because structure is important.

Surely we don’t agree to it.
Well Dodoro wouldn’t and Geelong kept Kelly this year and he had extenuating circumstances for wanting to return to Perth and Carlton told Crows where to go the first year they approached Gibbs, so maybe.
I just want our club to play hard ball for ONCE. I want us to get Overs for ONCE. I feel we are a pushover.

I just don't understand the link between player welfare and contracts. To me it's a salary cap game. There's only so much $ or happiness for the players. If one player gets overpaid x dollars then it means another player gets underpaid x dollars. I also think if there were no player managers then their would be more $ for the players to share. It would be interesting if players paid a small percentage to fund a contract advisory body which was staffed by employees providing information to the players and not being motivated by their percentage of contracts.

Dougal would be the last player I thought would be tempted if true. Why is he an unhappy camper C4? Coach related?

I'm interested to know exactly what positive contribution player managers have made to benefit sports world wide let alone Australian Rules.

Perhaps a necesity in some ways but not a great fan.

For the players a lot

I’m so sick of this club.
There had better be some good news this off season.
meh I'm sick of "good news in the off season" it's all been horse shit.. remember that 7 days of xmas garbage or whatever it was a few years ago, spare me I'm spun out.

They could sign Jesus Ablettfield & I really couldn't give two fcks.

They take young naive 17 year olds and school them on being fiscally responsible and offer to always look out for them and for their families best interests when it comes to making decisions about their football journey. :)

I wonder which of our players are in the anti-Ken group. I think Sam Gray may be.

Intereating that you mention a pro Ken group. Just how much of a division is there among players?

I’d hope some are pissed not making finals year on year

This. :thumbsu:

Maybe he’s trying to get an extra year added in or something. Hardly doing himself some favours with his finals so far.

We will all know next week I’m sure.

I heard he was offered 3 years by the crows.

Sometimes i go passed a player management thingy. I saw a dodgy looking bloke wandering around wearing a loud shirt unbuttoned to his belly. He was muttering something about money, money into his phone. There seemed to be some sort of massage place next door?
