Perhaps McCarthy's year off has rendered him valueless but that's an amazingly nice trade for Freo.

Even without McCarthy involved it looks good for them.
It's almost like paying them to get rid of him

The Giants moving up from pick 3 to pick 7 is like another draft pick for them. Setterfield or Perryman might have a bid on them before pick 7 meaning GWS would have to use 7 to match but if they've got pick 3 it takes that out of the equation so they can draft a non academy kid and still have later picks to match any bid on one of their academy kids.

Freo still get the player at 7 (SPS) they probably would have taken at 3 and get Mccarthy

Not sure why GWS need to throw in a later pick though

Giants must be desperate for cap space!

Doing that trade the Giants get other benefits in that they rort the F/S Academy bidding process.

They're chasing Will Setterfield, who Knightmare rates at pick 6 so far. If he is bid on by, say Fremantle, then GWS would have to use pick 7 as part of the points to select Setterfield.

If they trade pick 7 for 3, they can take a Brodie at 3, have Gold Coast bid on Setterfield at 4, and have to use pick 15 as the first pick in making up the points.

This way they essentially get Brodie or whoever at pick 3 and Setterfield via Academy at pick 4 (or 5 depending on who bids) in the draft for McCarthy, 7 and whatever points it takes for the Academy, as opposed to Setterfield at 3 (depending on bids) and pick 15 + whatever Freo gives them for McCarthy.

terrible deal for gws, unless the journo just ripped this rumor from bf

Was there a mention of "tough man Tony Abbott tactics" in the article?

I said a while back that I thought McCarthy will go to Freo for pick three and GWS first pick coming back, I don't see why GWS would add more to it either.

Zach Tuohy's requested a trade to Geelong.

I wonder how screwed over Carlton are going to get after this trade period.

Geelong don't have a first rounder and also want to bring in Deledio. No one seemed to bite at Motlop being on the table.

They'll need to suddenly find some picks.

Adelaide's Pick 13 + steak knives for Gibbs

On trade pick 13 to GWS for Marchbank so they keep pick 5

Motlop? for Tuohy

They'll do OK

Kersten and Vardy will get them a couple of picks but they'll more likely be 3rd rounders, 2nd rounders if they're lucky

FREMANTLE has moved closer to acquiring Greater Western Sydney forward Cam McCarthy, with the clubs discussing a deal in which first-round picks would be exchanged and another pick would be given to the Dockers.

Under the most recent proposal, the Dockers would give up pick no 3 and receive back GWS’ pick No. 7, with the Giants also giving up a later pick, most likely in the second round. The Giants hold picks No. 32 and 34 in the second round at present.

If this deal was agreed upon, the Dockers would gain McCarthy and a second-round pick and would see their first rounder downgraded to pick No. 7, while the Giants would simply gain four draft picks in the first round — from 7 down to 3 — while forfeiting the player and a later pick.

If this actually happens we need to a) Get the freo trading team onto our books and b) Trade with GWS... a lot.

I guess it isn't too bad considering they're in a rebuild phase.

Still, losing both players, especially one of Gibbs quality, could set them back a bit.

At the risk of labouring a point - last week Wallace and Barrett were asked on trade radio about Tom Lamb by a caller - Barrett didn't know who he was and Wallace said it was hard to track players in secondary competitions outside Victoria so didn't know what was happening with him.

Today a second person rang in and asked about Lamb - there was an echo from Wallace who just went back to justifying why he didn't know anything about Lamb other than he looked a nice player in his draft year.

So someone calls up about a player but you can't offer anything because you don't know anything. Some people might have gone and had a bit of a look into the player to see if there was anything you might be able to add if he his name came up again later.

Not the list manager. Doesn't give a ****

This is the same trading team that last year offered GWS their first round pick for that year and this years first rounder.

Freo were saved by GWS being campaigners

This is just a stupid trade though, if it pans out as reported.

Freo will likely take SPS at 3 or 7.

So they are effectively getting McCarthy and a second round pick for nothing.

They're running the risk that Gold Coast takes him at 4 or 6 though.

Maybe so, but that's not a reason for GWS to not do it. As some posters have noted before, there are definite advantages for GWS to upgrade their pick. What Freo does with it should be of no concern to them. McCarthy is a lost cause to them. Under these circumstances you could argue this is essentially handing them a four pick upgrade for nothing.

Edit: a four pick upgrade for a second rounder, not so much nothing, but plays nicely into their strategy.

It's strange, we did similar to get Sheed and a lot of people around here were very upset.

I guess the thing our recruiting staff are doing wrong are not being a different club that we have no emotional investment in. Everything looks 'bold' and 'brave' then.

To be fair, the proposed trade here involves getting McCarthy.

That would be like us trading pick 6 to Brisbane in exchange for Yeo, pick 11 (Sheed), and whatever pick we used to get Karpany.

It's not really that similar.
