Then we do what every other club does. use our sponsors to give lucrative promotions and deals to wanted players, and their families.
Quite a number of freos mining sponsors have players families working on good coin for doing jack shit as a result, for example.

What pushed Judd toward Carlton was Visy offering his mother a million a year, one day a week job at a desk doing jack shit

Judd got half that amount for being an "environmental ambassador" (an arrangement that is now not allowed to sit outside the cap). Are you sure that's not what you're thinking of?

I went to 15 games this year - 11 home games, an away derby, two interstate games and that final that was inexplicably cancelled. Watched the remaining games on TV. So I've seen a bit of them this year.

I'm all for adding extra midfielders, particularly some top end talent, but at the right price. Rockliff is overrated, Barlow is cactus and there's not a hell of a lot more available. If we want depth as opposed to superstars then I'd happily look at guys like Ellis-Yolmen and Ah Chee.

Otherwise, hopefully we'll have full uninterrupted years from Sheed and Redden, better output from Jetta, and improvement from Duggan and Partington, on top of whoever we get with pick 12. That's where I see our midfield improvement coming from.

Rockliff isn't just overrated, there is something toxic about him behind the scenes at Brisbane.

Sheed getting a proper pre-season for starters and actually playing. Dugan and Nelson getting their fitness and size up. Redden and Jetta not having injury interrupted pre-seasons although jury still out on Jetta. Picking up a SPP type in the draft who is ready for senior football. A lot better than "trade for some mids". I mean, can you think of any mids available that want to go to WCE who would actually complement the side? Don't say Barlow please because we already have a better version in Priddis.

Problem was we had out of form players and no one ready to come in. I agreed with and still do the signings of Redden and Jetta they both suited our needs but once you're this close don't go in your shell. Add something to help go the next step.

By the way I think Partington will be the bigger improver out of him, Duggan and Nelson. I'm hoping Duggan only had 2nd year blues

Maybe we should spend a couple of seasons near the bottom playing the kids and just drafting players. Get a few great picks. Try and wedge Hogan to replace Kennedy in the future. Not like we're gonna catch GWS, Sydney or Bulldogs anytime soon. Lets open our window when those at the top are on the downward spiral. The Petrie, Ballantyne stop gaps are not worth it.

Love the mentality of the "Trade for some mids" crowd. Every chance they've been criticizing the club all year for trading for Redden and Jetta.

It's the equivalent of the numpties who sit near me each game yelling "Just kick the thing!" followed inevitably by "Why'd you kick it there?"

We want action at any cost but we also reserve the right to criticize those actions when they fall over.

That's exactly why we got Redden however we need someone more flexible than Priddis. Love the guy but a very one-dimensional player with severe limitations in regards to his pace and kicking skills. We don't need another player like that.

Unless we are able to get an A Grade Mid, we are better off just going to the Draft! That's the road the Club has mainly gone down, and along the way we have even managed to play in 6 GFs and win 3 of them. Better than some other Clubs. Have seen many a Club try and buy success - more often than not it fails with perhaps the exception of Hawthorn but get the feeling their luck has or about to run out with their better players getting to the twilight of their careers.

Reckoned he had heard from a good source that three or four clubs had offered Judd some good coin, as well as some outside the club $$$ (as you mentioned, was completely legal back then. clubs still do this tho, mainly for family members). But claimed Carlton, thru Visy, were the only club where his family was also offered something. Namely, Mrs Judd who was a couple of years unemployed at the time, was 'offered' a completely bullshit job which required her to actually go to Visy once a week for a couple of hours to tick a few forms and sign a few documents... for a million a year. Judd quickly made his decision.

I didnt think much of this but for a few years after I have seen a few Carlton supporters bringing up the supposed job Judd's mother works at Visy. I think there is truth to it. The guy who used to run the company before he died (cant remember his name for the life of me) was a ****ing rat.

Crows have a heap of them and searching for a Shuey type which is harder to get. We already have Shuey should be easier to build around but doesn't seem it ATM.

That sort of deal would see us immediately stripped of points, draft picks, premierships etc if/when the AFL found out about it.

Innovation is one thing but salary cap rotting isn't the way to go.

The AFL does look in to a lot of these deals. It's not that easy to circumvent the salary cap anymore and I think your mate's been telling you a few wild ones - I mean if a poster on a footy website knows about it then it defies belief that the AFL wouldn't be aware of it.

Fremantle free agent Zac Clarke is understood to be wrestling with whether to play on at the Dockers or move to their cross-town rival West Coast, with the ruckman likely to make a decision in the next few days.

The Victorian has attracted interest from clubs in his home state but now looks set to remain in Western Australia.

Clarke, 26, is weighing up the ruck opportunities that exist for him at Fremantle over the next years compared with those at West Coast.

With Nic Naitanui set to miss most, if not all, of next season after undergoing a knee reconstruction and Scott Lycett under a fitness cloud following post-season surgery on his left posterior cruciate ligament, there could be plenty of opportunity in the Eagles' ruck division for Clarke next season.

However, in making his decision, Clarke will also consider how he will be placed in the Eagles' line-up when No.1 ruckman Naitanui returns in 2018.

Similarly, he knows that when Dockers great Aaron Sandilands eventually retires, possibly at the end of 2017, Freo's No.1 ruck role will be up for grabs.

any of us knew the answer to that. Mind you most players had or close to their best year that year. And we were only 1 win away from having to big shake at this year by being top 4. That's why we have to top up now

He's an unrestricted free agent so there's no cost besides cap space.

You're right though - if he wants opportunity, he's better off at Freo. And then when you consider he probably has a lot of friends there but none/few at WC you wonder why he'd leave. Perhaps if we've offered him more money he'd have to think about it however it's hard to imagine we're willing to use much more cap space on the ruck division. Seems unlikely.
