Sorry for my ignorance here, but given that Caddy appears to be keen on Essendon (based on what we saw last trade period), and that Essendon have a pick before us, isn't it true that we have little chance of getting him? Would love to see him at the club.

Edit: Okay, I know, should have revised this: does Ess have any traid bait for GC that would seal a deal?

Hooker and a 2nd rounder ;)

Cannot give in and throw away our first round DP. We could get a guy like Wines or Stringer who will be very valuable imo.

They just got rid of Fraser, so they'll be open to taking a ruckman like Hampson or Warnock.

Now as trade bait we have Kane Lucas as well who has struggled for opportunity and hasn't really shown much of the potential he was thought to have had to warrant him being amongst the top picks in the 09 draft. Fresh start might be ideal for Lucas to turn things around.

How about (Hampson/Warnock and Lucas) for (Caddy and Toy)?

The point with them getting a 1st rd draft pick is

1) They satisfy the mandatory "recruitment of 3 players/year rule" and
2) They get a quality kid

Giving them x2 players makes their list management HARDER (they need to clear up x2 more spots) and they still don't forfil their recruitment requirements.

To get Caddy/Toy for Lucas/Warnock you would need a 3rd party to part with a 3rd rd selection to get the deal done .........

Would rather we chased Toy than Caddy.

If there are 10 Vic clubs interested in Caddy then someone's going to end up paying massive overs.

On the other hand Toy has show nothing at AFL level so shouldn't cost too much, and was an u/18 star.

Caddy's the better player but i reckon Toy is the value buy.

As has been stated Gold Coast need to cut their list, but i don't think they will be completely against picking up established players, they need players in the 22-26 year old range to balance out their list and they have a whole ton of players who would barely get rookie list spots on their list still.

J. Allen - 1 Game
J. Brennan - Could be getting cut :/
M. Coad - 6 Games, injuries, Warnock has his full back position
P. Flannergan - 3 Games
J. Gilbee - 3 Games
A. Hall - 8 Games
J. Hall - 2 Games
J. Hutchins - 6 Games
H. Jolly - 6 Games
A. Magin - 8 Games
L. Moss - 0 Games
T. Nicholls - 1 game
L. Patrick - 11 Games
H. Schade - 0 Games

Just there are 14 names, they need to cut 7 as the general consensus for list shortenings and this years draft picks.

So the question is, is Ellard, Warnock, Lucas, Hooker, Pears etc no better for them than some of those names - Patrick 24 year old whos played 11 games, Coad - mature aged, injury prone and can't get a game.

Surely they can take some ready to go players.

Problem with Toy is he has little to no trade value, and any pick you trade for him would most likely not be used (eg they won't be looking to use a 2nd rd 2 pick as their 1st rd, Caddy Compo and 2nd rd selections will be of higher value (and will take up their x2 manditory list changes). Also if their elevation of O'meara counts as a change this year then they may only need 2 selections in the ND

Getting Toy would most likely be part of pick upgrade or a sweetener for the Caddy deal (which is why most people are including both in proposed deals)

I would do pick 11 for Caddy. Caddy has shown he's going to be a star, he's very young - but will far more likely have an immediate impact than a new draftee, he was taken at number 7 only 2 seasons ago.

As much as I'd like us to hold on to our first round pick this year, there is certainly merit in the idea of trading it to the Gold Coast.

We know that the Suns need to reduce the size of their squad, and I think that presents an opportunity. They have to cull their list, and they may just have to lose something for less than the value they perceive that something to hold.

I'd be open to the idea of trading pick 11 and a later pick, or a fringe player for Caddy and Toy.

With Russell, Thornton, or both set to leave us through free agency, the compensation we receive from the AFL by way of picks could hold the key here.

I just wonder if we could package one or both of the picks we'd be receiving, with pick 11, for those two from the Gold Coast.

I think we'd really benefit from a trade like that. And I think the Suns could do a hell of a lot worse than that, too.

Warnock + 2nd Round > Collingwood #17

#17 + Lucas > Caddy + (Toy?)

Outside the realms of possibility??

it's the magic "first round pick" they want, albeit a low one

The minimal chance of Collingwood doing business with Carlton will turn to zero chance with MM in the frame. Plus, I'm sure they would see Robbie Warnock as barely an upgrade over Cameron Wood.

Collingwoods main weakness, arguably, is their ruck stocks. Doubt we would be willing to trade one of our ruckman to them, unless it had a massive benefit for us, given they are likely one of the 5 to 6 teams we will be competing for a top 4 spot with. I know its pretty trivial, but you would be surprised how much the rivalries can effect decisions.

If we did send them Warnock, I would expect it to be for nothing other than their first round pick. After they go out in straighht sets, it could be around pick 16 or 17...

How about, assuming Port are still interested in Hampson (and we get Cloke)

Hampson + #11 to Port for #7 + 2nd rd selection
#7 to GCS for Caddy + 2nd rd pick (which they wouldn't use anyway)
Use the x3 (Carltons + Ports + GCS's) 2nd rd selections on the best available mids in the draft

EDIT. NVM they probably wouldn't trade Hampson for the 2nd rd pick, let alone it and a 1st rd upgrade ....... We would probably need to put in out 2nd rd pick too .........

Would like to keep our first round pick no matter what because it will net us a good player from a good draft.

Would like Caddy but not get into a bidding war that is likely to mean overs will be paid.

Suspect MM will have a couple of very specific targets to complete his concept of our premiership team list and they may not include the midfielder we all assume we need. Could see both Walker and Gibbs in the middle next year and making it a pretty formidable group. Walker may not have had the impact this year that he did in 2011 due to injury and being moved about the field but I thought he showed some real aggression and hardness that could serve us well in the engine, along with all his other attributes.

If we recieved Cloke as a FA we wouldn't get any compensation for either leaving thanks to the AFL's "net gain" formula

I confess I have seen SFA of Caddy...is he really that good?

He arguably kicked the sealer against the Blues in round 22. Along with two other goals as a forward. He tapered off as the year progressed through injury and illness, but he will be a very good player.
