Sydney are looking like the most active in this trade period from all reports...........sen reporting they are making deals for both martin mattner (adelaide) and adam bentick (carlton).............shame i think they can both play very very well, would have loved mattner at melbourne giving us run off half back, something we tottally lack, and bentick is a very good player goes hard and good diposal

forgot to mention fergus watts too, could be worth looking at for the right price, he was 12th or 13th pick in a very strong draft in 04............never ever wanted to be in adelaide and couldnt get a game.........while at stkilda he has had to be behind reiwoldt, gerhig and kozi.............jury is still out if he can play..............but i think in the right environment and situation he could be a good KPP prospect, has nice set of hands and maybe could even be tried in defence at centre half back or full back

You'll trade anything that isn't Travis Johnstone.

So true. But really if there was heaps of interest in Green and some club offers a very good deal I would take it.

Anyway, did anyone catch the back page of the Sun today? Johnstone and Carrol on the market.

Im not a big fan of Carrol but why would we trade him we have no other fullback really he is the best we have at this stage. We really should be looking for another backline player not trading one.

That is ridiculous.... Why would we trade our only man that could possible fill a full back position this year...

Keep Carroll. He had an awesome year last year, and was pushing for All Australian mid year 2006.

Frawley still needs at least a couple of years to hold down a spot - I picture him to be like a Goddard for the saints.

agree with all ur sentiments about carroll elias................like i have tried saying are people that bone headed to realise that he had a good year when we were good, in other words when we won in the mid-field carroll played well........it doesnt take a rocket scientist to realise that if ur getting belted every week like we were that the back line is going to suffer...........carroll can play and i really hope we keep him

As for frawley, yea seems a bit to skinny to be a full back straight away, could see a zac dawson happening to him and that has ruined the poor kids career..........intersting though in last years draft west coast were keen on frawley but we took him first, they had likened him to darren glass..........i can only pray and hope he turns out to be a similar type of full back...........get on the roids spud jnr!!!!!:D:D

Just thought i'd post the Herald Sun's latest article on Melbourne in the trade week by Mark Stevens

MELBOURNE has delivered a loud wake-up call to Travis Johnstone and Nathan Carroll, putting both up for trade.
Johnstone, the Demons' 2005 best-and-fairest winner, last night had attracted interest from at least two clubs and will be moved on if the price is right.

Carroll, a key defender in All-Australian contention as recently as last year, has not yet sparked significant interest.

Both are under contract next year and will stay at the Demons if deals are not struck, but the fact they are on the market is a strong statement by new coach Dean Bailey.

The Demons want the enigmatic Johnstone, 27, to become more consistent. Carroll, 27 next month, has been involved in two post-season incidents overseas in recent weeks.

Melbourne football manager Chris Connolly said last night Bailey had been open and frank with Johnstone about his future.

"Travis has got to take stock in terms of becoming a consistent, elite midfielder," Connolly said.

"Dean spoke to him clearly. He is contracted to Melbourne and will play for Melbourne unless someone is prepared to give up what we know he's worth and give him the opportunities he's looking for."

The Demons have been happy to make Johnstone's status public, with recruiting manager Craig Cameron yesterday declaring: "We don't use our players as bait, but Travis's name is out there."

Connolly said the Demons would have a strong focus on youth heading into the Bailey era.

"We're doing our forward planning around the age group of 22," Connolly said.

"We would be looking for draft picks or a quality player of that age bracket (22) for us to consider moving Travis on."

Although reports have suggested Johnstone was not in hot demand, Connolly said clubs were starting to swoop.

"There's been a lot of interest. Solid interest," he said.

Connolly would not name clubs, but it is understood Sydney is one to show interest.

Fremantle is believed to have shown early interest in Johnstone before trade period, but has dropped off.

"Clubs want to strengthen their midfield. He can really play. He's a class player," Connolly said.

Johnstone was the No. 1 national draft pick in 1997 and has played 160 games. Affected by an achilles injury this year, Johnstone managed only 15 games and could not make the top 10 in the Demons' best-and-fairest.

Carroll was sixth in the best-and-fairest in 2006 and touted as a possible All-Australian.

This year Carroll also missed the top 10 in the club's best-and-fairest, despite managing 21 games. He was dropped by caretaker coach Mark Riley late in the year.

Despite speculation he could be on the move, Brad Miller is a lot less likely to be traded by the end of the week.

The Swans have made their intentions on Miller clear, but it would have to be a very juicy offer to entice the Demons.

"Dean Bailey's very keen on Brad," Connolly said.

The Demons are attempting to strike a deal with Adelaide for ruckman John Meesen.

Would it be worth trading pick 21 for Kepler Bradley? He is a tall young defender with improvement still in him who has a big kick. The Dons have said they want a late first rounder for him..

Are you sure the team you support isn't Essendon? :)

KB isn't a footballers bootlace and never will be. Essendon would be happy to get anything for him, and their supports have said so as well.

I would rather use our early 2nd rounder to get a tall young defender then draft KB.

If we trade Travis, i would want a pick 12 or higher.

and if we trade Carroll (which we shouldn't) i would be after at least pick 22

Most outsiders would say that its not gonna happen and that as Melbourne supporters we are placing too much value on their heads... but we need those players.. especially because this draft is deemed to be relatively weak.

Travis a absolute star but needs hard nuts around him to protect him and needs to be more consistent - good at Sydney, and maybe Freo.

Carroll tries his heart out, not overly skilled but it tough and hard, would be ideal for hawks or Carlton.

News
ALL 16 AFL clubs have met behind closed doors at Telstra Dome on Monday to kick start the annual exchange period.

MELBOURNE
General manager recruiting and list manager Craig Cameron:
On Travis Johnstone: "Nothing has happened with Travis today. There hasn't been a lot [of interest in him]. There hasn't been many offers. It's a strange week, trade week. We don't use our players as bait but Travis' name is out there."

On Brad Miller: "There's been a little bit of interest from Sydney. We'd like to keep Brad, so that's where we're at. It would have to be [a good offer].

On Crows ruckman John Meesen: "I think by the end of the week [a trade] should happen. At this stage, we haven't gone too far with it. It will probably be draft picks, but it's only Monday and by the time we get to Friday, or even by Wednesday, we'll have a better idea. I wouldn't have thought [we would trade] a second round [pick]."

A little contradictory to what CC has said, but you get the same vibe!

Kepler Bradley no way! He is a jib.

It's not a smart idea to trade Carroll, we're already lacking defenders. Defenders are always made to look bad in a poor season, its hard to defend when the ball is constantly getting drilled lace out to your opponent on the lead.

We should definately look at trading some of our midfielders, perhaps one of Bruce, Green or Johnstone. I'd be happy to trade any of our midfielders except for Mclean or Jones as they will be stars in the future.

But lets look at some KPP, I was excited by the prospect of Matt Maguire, however i think he's signed with St Kilda for a couple more years. We need to look at a CHB.

Ferguson >>> Kepler Bradley

Carroll stays, Frawley is a skinny kid who can't play FB

Meesen --> PSD

AMon Buchanan ???

would we want to do a pick 21 for Buchanan trade you think?

Is he worth our 2nd pick or better getting say Simpson or another draftee?

4) Trade C Johnson to dockers for Ryan Murphy. Dockers want to keep their first 2 round picks. Thus, Pick 24 is unlikely.

Has Johnson indicated he wants to return to WA, wasn't he a father/son selection? He hasn't played many games, has that been due to poor form ir injury?

13 games in 4 years wouldn't make him worth pick 24 I would have thought.

Does anyone else get the feeling that the whole TJ and Carroll being 'Up" for trade is a ploy by Deano (Loving that name the more its used) to give them an extra boot up the ass?

Thinking about it, Trav is considered extremely talented, but lazy. Putting him up shows he is expendable and if he wants to be a walk-up in this team he better deliver consistantly.

Carroll may be in the mindset that there aren't any other options in our defence, and therefore getting complacent in the fact that he is the only man who can fill the role. Putting him for trade lets him know he can either bleed for the club or hit the road.

Other Trade talk:

Meesen- pick 37 or PSD. Take it or leave it Crows

CJ for Murphy- I'd be jumping at that.

Trade Green? You gotta be kidding me, his value in our side is up there with almost any player on our list.

Miller- Deano seems keen on working with him, so does Roos. Maybe Daniher missed something? Keep him and watch carefully.

I did mention CJ though. He could turn into a good winger if actually given time to develop. I don't think Murphy has too much value, despite obvious potential, given that he's about the 5th ranked tall forward at Freo atm behind Pavlich, McPharlin, Tarrant and Browne.
