I think we saw a definate improve ment with Hurn, Shuey and even Lecras bring the ball inside 50 against Geelong in round 22. If we could continue this next year we are more likely to post a winning score.

Problem being can we replace Hurn and Lecras ?

At the end of 09 we seemed to have turned a corner and that WOULD of been a good time to trade in some decent quality mature players to compliment our youngsters (and apparently we did try for Stokes and a few others) but we ended up with Dalziell and pick 22 (Gerrick Weedon).

Case can be made we're not actually any good at trading. The only decent trade-ins I can remember have been Chick and Stenglein, and they both had a case of the "I-want-to-come-home" disease.

It seems this has been going since the year dot. The club prospers when it drafts well and falters when it doesn't. Sticks with it's players through thick and thin unless the Vics get the go home disease.

I'm slightly frustrated with the public bluster of being active in trading, especially when the club's list is in bad shape, and seeing nothing come of it, all the while the Sydneys and the Collingwoods are able to make their deft moves year in year out.

these reasons mentioned above are why we must draft a quality midfielder ie: Heppell or Gaff we know they have good foot skills. Please do not draft Darling he is not what we need.

Why is not picking up another team's discards such a bad thing in so many people's eyes?

Look at the most recent premiers. Collingwood only had one player in the premiership 22 (Jolly) that was traded in. At least I can't think of any others.

Ditto for Geelong, apart from Ottens they drafted all their premiership players.

Ditto for Hawthorn with the exception of Croad, who they drafted anyway before sending him to Freo for a couple of years.

We had two players in 2006 - Chick and Stenglein.

In the meantime, other teams like St Kilda (Gardiner, Ray, Peake etc) and the Bulldogs (Hall, Aker, Eagleton, Hudson etc) have traded pretty heavily but haven't won a flaf.

Hill would offer that pacey half forward/forward pocket we require and allow us to stop trying to play Masten in that role and move him into the midfield where he belongs. But now he looks destined to Hawks, while Krakeour is already gone.

We should be talking to blokes like Nathan Djerrkura, pacey outside players who are obviously quality but struggling in the best (well was the best) midfield in the league, while we have tons of inside midfielders, (Priddis, A Selwood, S Selwood, Ebert, Masten and Swift to an extent) we need more outside midfielders WITH FOOTSKILLS something our current crop of like Rosa, Dalziell, etc lack. Look at Embley and how important his role was in the 06 grand final when he used to hit targets more.

But alas we seem destined to just sit back, get a couple of dud draft picks for trades and continue to bank on our "youngsters" coming on... then after 3 poor years just say they havent developed like we hope but continue to back them...

Djerrkura from the Cats is shit....Stokes too old and made to look good at the Cats. Adding players like those two and Hill etc, will not get us a flag.

People just like the excitement of gaining new players and get impatient if we don't chase anything.

I spoke to someone who would certainly know what's going on and he said, There would have to be a bloody good deal/player on offer to relinquish our first three picks. Apparently a very strong draft. Also, and more importantly, flat out laughed off the Shuey talk, said there is zero chance of him leaving, and said he's a future captain of the Eagles.

Come draft day I'm sure you will be relieved we didn't trade our good picks for under performing players.

Ball was effectively traded in, in that they used a pick to schnaffle an established player, and you could argue those two trades made a pretty big difference to Collingwood's side.

Your comparison with St Kilda is valid though, they have sought to trade in players over the years and while they have built a good side, there is not a huge amount of quality coming through underneath.

Of course Collingwood is at a totally different stage of the cycle to our side. I for one will be glad if we don't trade in any older players this year, we are still building our core and that needs to happen through the draft.

Geelong also had Cameron Mooney, while Collingwood had Ball, Leigh Brown and Jolly which all three of those had an impact. Look at Sydney and when they won in 05 plus lost 06, and also continue to perform.

Its not about "picking up old age duds".. its about getting in the range of 20-26 yr old fringe players who may be able to offer something such as Hill if they fill a role.

You really think keeping blokes like Lynch (when we already signed Callum Wilson) as well as having Hansen, Nicoski, Jones, players such as Rosa, Butler (who struggles to get on the park), Dalziell (can find it but butchers it worse than Priddis) and rookies such as Oakley-Nichols who have been in the AFL system for a fair few years and was easily overtaken by Hams and Strijk are going to lead us back to being a premiership contender?

I am not saying pickup any available dud, I just really think Hill could of been a good fit for the club, who knows maybe we take the cheaper option and try for Brennan Stack and hope he can develop

I guess it can be a bit of a "hope" come trade time, we will land a big star for a cheap price who will add plenty to our team.. but to get quality you have to give up quality and since Judd we havent had any decent players want to leave.

It's a good idea to trade in players when your close to a flag. It's stupid to do it from last on the ladder.

Spot on. Now we are shit, should we draft and build up. We should only be trading players out, not in. When we get better and are near a premiership, then trade away picks for players, no doubt. But only when you ARE real close, not when you THINK you are close, like Vossy last year.

Ah, Mooney. I knew I'd forget someone. Ball should be included for the reasons Wirra outlined. Brown was picked up in the draft after being delisted by North.

Dalziell is a perfect example of why we shouldn't fall over ourselves to trade in fringe players from other teams. Butler's shown he has class when he can get on the park. Rosa's improved to the point that he has a definite place in our best 22 going forward. The other guys you mentioned will be gone from our list at the end of 2011, if not sooner.

We are rebuilding. The best way to do that is through the draft and leave the trading for the time when we have a list that is playing finals consistently but has some specific holes to fill.

It worked for us in 2005/06 and it worked for Collingwood this year, Geelong before that and Hawthorn in 2008.

If you want to trade away picks for bit part players from other clubs look at 2000/01 for how that worked out for us.

As for the whinging about Spangher and McKinley maybe netting us only a couple of useless 3rd or 4th round draft picks, consider what we would be prepared to give up for them - they don't have any real currency. Best we can hope for is a pick upgrade.

Well it will be very interesting to see who gets a premiership first between Syd and Eagles... very interesting. Completely different routes.

You just mentioned Rich who would be in the same vein as Shuey, Naita, Hill, J Selwood. These players don't get traded or if they do its massive news i.e. Judd/Ablett.

Trading week is usually the club's rejects swapping clubs.

It all depends on who is involved.

Sydney are the one club that has traded very well over the years but I think a great deal of their success can be attributed to Paul Roos. They haven't had a 100% success rate with their trades either.

No doubt if a player like Rich was available I'd hope we'd have a crack but we are hardly talking about a bit part player.

I have been thinking about this whole trade week and lack of WCE movement and i am warming to it being a good sign. Sure we got mighty shitty with the coaching staff and players this year but lets think about this a bit. We have had few bright sparks of late and we are the joke of the competition but that aside the last few years this has been Melbourne and before them Carlton they were pure shit and LOL funny to watch them get smashed every week. We are now at this point we have hit rock bottom during our rebuild, we have criticized our roster and staff and fear that nothing will come good again. We need to look at the teams from the last few years who just got on with the rebuild. We have genuine young talent at this club who are still to reach there potential we have three very good picks in the coming draft, we have or will delist some dead weight. Next year may not be better pastures but they should sure be greener, whether that is with Woosha in charge or a new coach time will only tell. Lets remember we barely get belted week in week out unlike the Dees did. We have a massive fan base who demand results, we have cash to buy the best staff and we have a very good history.
With this being said my anger at this season and lack of activity has dropped away and i see what my fellow BF board members have been telling us more angrier members. Just be patient.

Don't be stupid mate, we'll probably pick some nuff nuff in a wheel chair with how we are going. I have never in my 20+ years of following this club become so disillusioned with what we are doing, who we are recruiting and our selection or players.
