Trades and draft selections

I know it won't happen because of the team fabric thing but from a pure list management perspective, I would offer Boyd or Cross for Walker. Carlton paid pick 12 for McLean last year so they are keen on an inside mid and Boyd/Cross are elite.

We're flush with them so can afford to lose one. I'm also not sure we can play all of Boyd, Cross, Ward, Higgins, Reid, Addison, Gia and possibly Gilbee who has slowed down, all in the same side as slow mid-sized players. And that's without mentioning opportunities for Libba and Wallis. I suspect the MC will try to play them all because they are all deserving but if/when we start losing games, a couple will need to be squeezed out for team balance.

Yep. They're 28 (or 29?) next year and will maintain their level for one maybe two more years at most. I think with Reid and Addison, we have good depth in the hard nut extraction area to let one of them go. Whether it's for Walker or someone else or a draft pick is up to the MC but i think one is tradeable. If not, then we'll either force a premature retirement of one of them next year or one of our kids will walk seeking further opportunities.

Why, the midfielders that drop off are the ones that rely on speed as an asset as they lose this, neither Boyd or Cross have any to lose as their games are built around winning hard ball and courage, no reason they can't stay in top form for another 3-4 more years.

Are you on heat?

If we were to trade either Boyd or Cross we would rip the heart and soul out of our team. Good god, that is possibly the stupidest trading suggestion I have heard since the Bombers wanted West for a Welsh or whoever he was.

Like I said, it won't happen because of the team harmony thing.
Nothing stupid about the trade itself though:

1) A stupid trade is one that is obscenely lopsided. If anything, this would be lopsided in our favour.
2) This trade ships out something we have a surplus of (hard nut extractors)to bring in something we are short on (speed).

Note that my comments are based on the MC wanting Walker. Personally, I'm a bit 'meh' to Walker.

I don't really think it's a factor.
Plenty of speedy midfielders play to a ripe old age. Look at Aker, Johnno, Eagleton, Travis Johnstone.
Likewise, plenty of slow midfielders can drop off quickly. Look at Voss, Carr, Ball, O'Bree, James McDonald.

It's more about their bodies and ability to adapt.

I must say you people strike me as being pretty reasonable after reading some of the rubbish being posted on Adelaide and Richmond boards.

And I would further endorse the sentiment that CFC are a good club to deal with based on the last 3-4 years. There have been times over the last few years where WCE have claimed to get the better of the Judd deal, and Freo have claimed to get the better of the Warnock deal. That has obviously evened out a bit. This year Melbourne supporters have claimed the better of the McLean deal but that could change next year with a better injury run. Point being, our trades are usually pretty debatable in terms of who wins which is a good sign that we trade reasonably.

Now ... I think Walker for Everitt is not too far off - and that the exchange of a later pick might do the trick.

Both players could flourish in a new club.

Logic is not welcome here.
What has Tambling done to impress anyone? He has an 'upside' side he started playing afl level and has never showed much. Richmond was pitiful early this season and they got somewhere by playing kids with real potential. With the change of coach at Richmond if he doesn't prosper there, he never will.

Tambling's best has been very good to watch. A player like him is always going to struggle at a team like Richmond. They haven't been able to move the ball to save themselves over the last few years.

You have to think how he'd fit in with the way WE move the ball, not how Richmond does. We have a couple of skillful backs, that are very good at putting the ball across the ground into open space. What we don't have is fast and positive running half backs (although, Easton Wood has gone some way to fixing this problem), we've had to play Murphy back because of that as a result. Add a guy with Tampling's propensity to run, his mroe than reasonable pace and the likelihood we'll get him into space and he becomes a very handy player.

Coaches make their mind up about players all the time, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. Just because Hardwick doesn't rate him, it doesn't mean he's no good.

Just so people know even though it hasnt been reported yet everybody who went up to Jetta at Crichton medal friday and asked if he was staying was told by Jetta he had signed a deal that very day.

If Scott Clayton hadn't messed up in 06, Everitt (picked at 11) would be treading water somewhere else and we'd have Frawley (12) or Reiwoldt (13) ... which would mean 1 more All Australian. Everitt for Walker won't fly.

Yet Everitt's first year was sensational. So many picked him to win the Rising Star the following year. We just don't seem to have a position for him in the team.

I don't buy this argument that he hasn't performed "because there's no position for him".

If he can play sensational football there's always a place for him in the team. In fact it should be used as a weapon - a winger who can take a big grab and do ruckwork, a ruckman who can sprint and kick 60m goals, etc etc.

He should in fact be the archetypal utility for the new interchange rules.

Everyone thinks these rules will force teams to field only one geniuine ruckman. Everitt will be able to ruck when needed but also take a stint in the midfield, defence or forward line when Murphy, Gilbee, Cooney, Grant or whoever needs a rest.

Your point about being a back up ruckman is well made. You would think Hawthorn would look at him.

You've either had a heavy knock on your head or you're a Carlton supporter in disguise as a Bulldogs fan!

Boyd and Cross are going nowhere.

The way I see it , these are the trades and picks that will happen,
first, Sherman for compo
then djerkurra for 4th round from cats
walker for everitt and fourth rounder
Josh hill and Brennan stack for 2nd and 4th
rounders from wc
minno to port for second rounder

1st pick to wallis
2nd pick to libba
2nd pick best available tallent
3rd pick for faulks
4th pick Paul popuala(? Spelling)
rookie-mature age ruckman

I would be really really happy with that, maybe even faulks at 4th or 5th and someone else at 3rd!

I don't think we should risk it.

I'd imagine a number of clubs would have had the same strategy for other VFL recruits : "why a 3rd round for Sam Mitchell when we can use a 4th or 5th" ... or similar thinking resulting in missing Davey/Hudson/Taylor/Barlow/a host of others by a round.

9 new payers of which 6 are mature age / proven or unproven ? I would invest in a bit more young talent. Maybe the mature age ruck I would risk and rely on Cordy / Prato for the 3rd string.

Who would you target for the 2nd pick, best available or for need, I would be looking at a Key Position Back if we got Sherman / Walker. I think we may lose Tiller and Callan is gone

I know nothing of this Puopolo but like the look of Faulks although he need to put on weight to play AFL
