The Kangaroos are almost certain to demand draft selections rather than a trade of players in their negotiations with Adelaide over Wayne Carey.

Financial considerations, and new coach Dean Laidley's desire to nurture a young list, leave no room for high-priced Crows in the Roos' calculations.

The Kangaroos are expected to re-sign Shannon Grant and Leigh Colbert in the next 48 hours while Winston Abraham hopes to be picked up by either West Coast or Fremantle.

What would you want in return for Abraham.

Unfortunately because he has been injured for a while I don't think you'll get anything more than maybe a third round draft pick.

What do you think?

I'd take an early third round pick... for Winnie... we got him for nothing (anderson only played a few games then retired) so what have we got to lose...

Just been thinking about it, and realised the Roos have done an awful lot of trading with the Dockers in recent years:

Abraham, Sinclair, Burton, Bell, Dhurkay, Anderson.

And I'm sure there's more on that list.

We screw port on the field and screw the dockers off it

but on the other hand our record against sydney is no longer too flash on the field and we didn't get a whole heap out of McClaren from the saints (not that they have got too much from Capuano)

Yeah I reckon his trade potential would be very low, but if he was delisted somebody might do a David Bourke  and draft him with one of those last round nuff nuff picks.

I think Winnie still has something to offer, because he is a good footballer, but having played about 10 seconds of (extremely idiotic) footy in the last 2 years, there are obviously doubts about his ability to come back.

Heres a Carey trade, also sorts out the Davis trade:

Carey to Adelaide
Johnson to Collingwood
Davis to Sydney
Sydneys 1st pick to Roos (Its #7)

Get:
Adelaide:Carey
Collingwood: Johnson (The big signing the collingwood fans have always bragged about!)
Sydney: Davis
Roos: #7 (The pick we picked Hale up with!)

Lose:
Adelaide: Johnson
Collingwood: Davis
Sydney: #7
Roos: Carey

Go Roos

Sounds good Tashi, Johnc*ck sounds ok with me. I spose Collingwood could do with another midfield type wiht NDavis leaving. The Hawks are another team that could do with another midfield type with Chick leaving too, so there's another trade possibility.

In relation to the article at the beginning of this thread, it shouldn't be strictly just draft selections and not players. Sure i understand Laidleys policy of youth and our less than perfect financial position, but IF those players are young and IF they fit our plans there's no reason why we cannot trade for them as we have already got players who have proved to some degree that they can play footy in the afl.

Call me greedy... but I want Adelaide's first pick too...

or Carey can go in the draft...

Absolutely

Carey for Pick 7 when Trent Croad went for Number 1 that netted Hodge

you gotta be kidding

The irony is that by going down to the 92.5% of the cap and picking up kids is that if our Docklands plans go smoothly (did I mention the IF element of all of this?), then we can gradually move up to 100% of the cap as our kids develop and (IF) our cashflow improves. We could hopefully avoid the problems that Freo and Richmond had with overpaying their players and then having to juggle things around to keep everyone happy.

I'm happy to give Kane Johnson a miss and picking up kids in the draft.

we won't get nething for winnie will we, because he is on the long term injury list.... thats one reason why carey wasn't put on this list, this year, because it would mean he could leave the club, without us getting nething out of it.......
winnie's not actually on our senior list nemore, so he can go to freo/west coast, without us getting nething in return....
it's a shame though, he was such a good player.

i would have thought if we were to get anything for winnie we would get a pick way way late in the draft.....that is if he is tradeable at that (if he's still on our list?)

as for draft picks, we should really be gunning for a top 4 draft pick not something in the late first round....

we have our pick at #11, we should get reilly and johnson from the crows who we could then on trade to st.kilda/hawthorn/collingwood/essenscum/carlton/richmond/st.kilda for a very high draft pick where we can snare salopek...who i think should go no.1 if not top 3 of this year's draft...

Winnie is still on our list.

By being on the injured list, it means that the players must stay on the list for at least 8 weeks. With Winnie injured from the start of the season, we had Baird on our list and then added Digby when Corey Jones was injured. Baird was then put back on the rookie list when Jones came back but Digby played on until the end of the season. That doesn't mean he stays on the list. At seasons end, he is back on the rookie list and we then need to add him to our final list by making room and delisting someone else.

Hope that all makes sense.

Given all that, neither Freo or WC wanted Winnie 2 years back so why would they want him now. If we get a very low draft pick for him, it would be cause they feel sorry for us and for no other logical reason. He would a big risk to them.

My belief is winnie did not re-sign last year... as the offer put by North was not very good... so I think he is uncontracted and thus could go where he wants... it is not like the demand would be extremely high....

We won't get any trades for Winnie - most clubs have at least two forward crumbers, so why go for someone in their late 20s?

If Winnie finds another club, it'll be him getting picked up by someone with their last pick in the pre-season draft. Mind you, if Richmond can take a punt on Paul Hudson, maybe Winnie will find a new home there.

Except i hear he wants to return home to WA, being from there to start with. Perhaps he will have to just play WAFL with his old club Perth.
