Not really a trade that hurt the club. We had to trade him and Schneider as we couldn't fit them under the cap (COLA!!!111) but despite them improving as players after they left Sydney, I wouldn't say it hurt us as a club.

The affairs that those in charge orchestrated to give away rights to Wayne Carey and John Longmire as juniors on the other hand...

Shot gun Williams was disaster. Atleast got Carlisle out of it...though would have got him anyway without the trade and could have got another high class mid for Pick 16.

I thought Peter Walsh was quite handy for Port? Could just be my hazy memory, no superstar but solid player nonetheless.
You're right, spud was a bit strong as he was perfectly solid for us in his initial year with us, but ultimately nothing more than a top-up player who was delisted 2 years later, and certainly not the game changer that Scott Thompson could have been.

The Tarrant one sticks out for me, the pick we gave up was used on Ben Reid and Tarrant ended up back at Collingwood anyway. Suffice to say I wouldn't mind Ben Reid in our list right about now.

There has been a Few trade stuff ups that freo did from 1994-2006. The Tarrant one you mentioned was bad. Trading 11, 27 and 43 which was our 1st, 2nd and 3rd round picks of 2004 just to get Josh Carr was one of the worst trades freo have done. Then Carr walked out of our club after 4 years.

What made it worse, Port refused to give up a draft pick for us. Along with Josh Carr went to an overseas Holiday during trade week. Port then got Josh Carr in the PSD.

That is basically why I have intense Dislike of Port and Josh Carr at the time.

Not a trade so much but letting Greg Williams go to Sydney wasn't very clever by Geelong in the 80's. Just because he asked for a bit more money. If they had of paid him the $40,000 he wanted he'd have stayed at the Cats and could have possibly turned some of those premiership losses into wins.

Trading Mumford has bitten us a bit as since Ottens retired we haven't really had a match winning ruckman. We just didn't have room in our cap to offer him a contract like Sydney did so we had to let him go. They gave Blake a contract that year too and that left only a small amount of money for Mumford. At the time I think they felt they had to repay Blake for the service he had put in as Ottens no 2, and carrying the ruck all those games Ottens was injured.

The interchange sub rule eventually led to the extinction of ruckmen like Blake, and Geelong got caught out having put their eggs in that basket. Mumford would have slotted in nicely as our no 1 ruckman after Ottens retired. But it was never to be and now we still struggle with that position.
But now we have Duncan who is going to be a gun. I think we did pretty good.

Hmm lets see, we have done some stupid stuff,
The Thompson trade was good at the time, if he didn't do his knee it would have been good.... but not to be...
Hay.... well pick 18 ended up being Bailey, we probably could have taken someone else... but whatever should have done our research.....and maybe could have helped Hay out...

we did some strange trade with West coast that got them Hurn... wouldn't mind him over at north....

Didnt want Byron picket going anywhere, but was'nt our choice and same with peter bell even though we traded him for everything including the kitchen dink......

traded for Carey and Longmiur which was great for us but terrible for Sydney..

Josh Gibson wanted to leave which left a bit of a gap in our defense for a short period there but now im happy with the trade....

probably a few others im forgetting....

1999 - Trading Clinton King and Pick 3 for Steve McKee and Pick 7. Cost us Pavlich, who may have been enough to get us over the line in 2002.

2007 - Trading Pick 14 for Cameron Wood. Could've potentially drafted Jack Grimes, Harry Taylor, Callan Ward or Scott Selwood, amongst others.

What exactly was the deal with Carey and Longmire? How did Sydney have them in the first place if they weren't drafted?
i believe they were zoned to us, but at that time we were strapped for cash, really strapped, and took what we could get. Carey from memory was at North Adelaide at the time(testing my memory here), dunno about Longmire. Sydney had a fire sale, and North turned up..
