IMO, all the discussions about trading of players and draft picks in the hope of picking up either Chick or Headland are wide of the mark.

The eagles have a good crop of young players, and this year the midfield stood up...and there are younger players such as Sampi, Humm and Munro who may also add to that midfield strength in the future.

Our younger talls look like they may need more time to develop, but Lynch, Gaspar, McDougall and even Glass may do just that next year.

The half back line looks a lot better with Green and Hunter on it, and if there are any weaknesses it would seem to be small backmen, and good half forward flankers. We seem to be lacking both.

Granted both Chick and Headland can play a variety of roles, including half forward flank, but both are likely to be expensive to acquire, and would they be really worth it?

IMO the answer is no. A better strategy would be to look at those middle tier players who have been given opportunities and not taken them as trades for similar kinds of players at other clubs.

In other words you trade those with some potential left, but who have not been able to find their feet with you, and get the same kind of players from the other clubs.

The current core of young players and the few established stars at WCE are good ones, who got the club into 8th position this year. That core group should remain. There are not that many players who are vulnerable

The players to trade are:
Williams
Embley
Morrison - has not played for a couple of years, now vulnerable, but would be tradeable for a mid range player
Read -same as Morrison

The players to delist are (which other club would take them?):
Harding
Sierakowski - vulnerable, could not cement a place
Prior - vulnerable, same as Siera.

Methuselah you may be in Germany but you know exactly what you're talking about. Trade for trade sake isn't the best policy. The only teams that didn't trade last year were the Eagles and Collingwood. One was tipped to be the wooden spoon and made the finals and the other was tipped by some quarters not to make the finals and made the Grand Final. It doesn't mean we don't trade when the prospective players are as good as Chick and Headland but not at any price and certainly not with players like Wirrapunda and Gardiner. To hell with the trade if we have to give up one of our best players or one of our potential good players. The way to go is the one suggested by Mead and followed by the Brisbane Lions. Keep your players together as long as possible and build a great team from inside. Leight Mathews did exactly that. Took over a wooden spoon team and made it back to back premiers. Malthouse did that with the Eagles in the early 90's and is doing the same with the Pies. So I hope Woosha doesn't feel tempted to go wild in the silly trade season. I am even inclined to say that when a club doesn't trade it may be good news. It means the team is settling down and cementing the edifice they are building.

What we have to do is give it a go come trade week, it would be silly to not at least have a look at aquiring Headland. If Brisbane drive to hard a bargain...dont worry about it because i think we have a good enough core group to improve even further next season. But we MUST at least have a look at Chick and Headland come trade week.

Chick will be a lot more affordable than Headland, and quite frankly I think he'd be worth it.

Headland gets more expensive by the day (in terms of what we have to give up) and word today is that he sounds happy to stay up there.

But yeah, I agree, trading for trading's sake is just plain dumb. Our young guys look good enough, and maybe at the end of next year we can look at where our shortcomings are (assuming we improve to 6th or so) and look at what types of bit players to trade for to take the next step.

I agree....Chick is affordable as we will probably get him relatively cheap whereas Headland is starting to get way too expensive plus Brisbane are doing everything in there power to keep him compared to Chick who is all but gone from Hawthorn. I also dont think WC are prepared to give up a player of Wirrpunda's ability to aquire Dessy.

The sounds that are coming from Brissy are more like Wirra plus our first pick

That's too much!!!!

I'll probably get flamed for saying this,

While I would prefer to keep Wirra, he is a Victorian and he has family issues in Victoria. It may be wise to trade him now when we can get someone like Headland for him.
If he decides to go back to Victoria down the track, we may end up with nothing. Let Brisbane worry about that.

I wouldn't give up a first round pick in a weak draft though. If we could talk them down to Wirra & 2nd round pick I'd be satisfied.

But Wirra doesn't want to leave. You can't trade a player if he wants to stay. Same goes for Morrison. Both players have publicly stated they want to stay at the eagles and become one club players.

We don't have any players that Brisbane would want (apart from the 4 untouchables + Wirra). I can't see any way for us to get Headland unless we trade heavily for draft picks and pass them on to Brisbane. But even then, would the club want to ontrade several low picks (I'd imagine at least 2 1st rd picks).

IMO, WCE should chase Chick. Headland would cost us too much, forget him. No point in dismantling our young squad for the sake of signing one player.

Yes I agree. I believe we have an alright squad and dont need much change.

Foregt Desi, he aint coming home. All rumours and asides point to the fact he will stay.

Return our focus on Chick, if that does not work out then we leave the list the way it is.

agreed, but only if he is cheap;) Not requires, but would be welcomed if we can get him.

If he did come home, I still prefer him at WC rather than playing for the Violets. Knowing our luck, he would tear us apart in the first derby of the year....

 When did this rule come in?
Might have to tell Trent Croad that.

Well if Desi ain't leaving then it's irrelevant anyway. Back to Chick again. :(

A player has to agree to be traded.

Brisbane could offer us Black, Akermanis, Brown, Headland + Lappin for Harding, but if harding said "i'm not signing with them" then the trade wouldn't go through.

Harding would honestly be tracked down and beaten within an inch of his life.....and I'd be leading the charge :D

Try the Bullcreek TAB - he's often there.

You guys should give Harding a break. I went to Uni with him and he is one of the nicest guys you would ever meet. He is also a great kick of the footy, and I held high hopes of him being a star for our club when he came on board. It's just a pity he has spent the last two years injured (has he actually played a senior game for us?)

Yeah I reckon. I was just about to say before reading your post 'god the Eagles fans love giving it to Harding'.

Why do the Eagles fans like giving it to their own players anyway? Like Taylor, Embley and Harding.

Freo fans don't make jokes of Metropolis and co, even though he is a hack. Maybe Eagle fans should learn something about being a team.

It's one of the most frustrating things about being an eagles fan. If you go to the games ( I try to go to every second one) all you hear is a couple of loudmouths bagging all the players, except of course when we are winning.

Mind you. It has nothing on the Glory crowds. If I was in the Glory, most of the time I would prefer to play away.

Harding is the only guy i really give it too...and to be honest i give it to him because i still feel that he is the enemy. Injuries have hampered him ever playing for the Eagles so i can only ever view him as a Docker. If he had played some games for us i would start thinking of him as one of the family and stop bagging him. But to me, he is still just a Freo player. I hope he finally gets a chance next season and plays some games for us.

In fact from this day forth i will no longer bag him .... i will support him.

What an absolute crock

I have heard Freo supporters openly bag Metropolis, Fewster, Waterhouse (despite his ridiculous cult status at Freo), McManus (deservedly so) and the list goes on. The most recent one I heard was a few Freo supporters ripping into James Walker.

So before you get on your high horse maybe you should take a proper look around, I think you'll find every club has players which fans love to hate.
