Trading the #1 pick

It's a fair explanation but as you say, GWS have incredible depth, who is to say the bloke they pick up at pick 1 doesn't also become 6-8th in line for a midfield spot? In this instance the elite talent of either Hopper/Patton plus the elite talent of pick 3 isn't surely swamped by the talent of pick 1? If pick 3 and Hopper aren't getting a run in the GWS midfield...

But they wont use it on a midfielder, they want a running half back in McGrath, which again they have some depth in (Shaw, Williams, Wilson) but far less than forward or midfield. They expect him to replace Shaw in 2 years, and so he as a 'type' of player is probably worth more to GWS than another midfielder which, again, could be replaced this year (Setterfield/Perrymen) alone.

Why the hell didn't we do the deal? #1 and #41 for #3 and #16?

Unless GWS is trying to get BOTH #1 and #2, and have a deal for us of #5 (?), #15 and a player(s)??????

Reasonably annoyed we didn't do the Brisbane deal. It does show a good deal was on the cards. Will be interesting to see why we weren't interested.

Pick 3 means Essendon likely lose out on McCluggage, and weren't keen to do that as Dodoro hinted bombers wanted 'class midfielder' with pick 1 on trade radio.
Odds are (my opinion) if the Bombers were to lose out on McCluggage/McGrath, Dodoro wanted more than pick 15 or 16 in return as compensation with pick 3, which would likely have turned into 18-20 after academy bidding

The top 5 are all pretty even in the draft by most reports. And SPS is the prototype of the player Dodoro described (as is McGrath. McCluggage, less so). All three are strong inside/outside.

Oh well, I'll be pretty happy with McGrath. Just think we could have got more out of this than just him.

Gold Coast are sitting ducks with a Bowes bid coming, they should be offering us pick 4 and 8 for 1.
Its actually a bad move for GCS to do that trade. Really bad.

If a team bids on Bowes at earliest opportunity (#2 with trade, #1 otherwise).
No Trade: Bowes takes #4 and #6 and get back #11.
Trade: Bowes costs #6, #22 and get back #33
Both lose #4, #6 and get Bowes. Difference: #1, #33 versus #8, #11 and #22. Win for "not trading"

If he is bid on at #2
No Trade: Bowes takes #4
Trade: Bowes costs #6, #22 and get back #33
Both lose #4 and get Bowes. Difference: #1, #33 versus #6, #8, and #22. Win for "not trading"

If he is bid on at #3
No Trade: Bowes takes #4
Trade: Bowes costs #6, #22 and get back #24
Both lose #4 and get Bowes. Difference: #1, #24 versus #6, #8, and #22. Win for "not trading"

I dont understand this but I disagree, give us pick 4 and 8 Gold Coast!

BLUFF called.... They take Will Brodie (better player IMO)
Then... They will pick Bowes up in 2 years when he wants to go home to his family....
Works both ways....
Then Essendon starts again in 2019 with a rookie that they get for Bowes/exchange of picks.
It's a fine line that Dumbdoro is walking.

Bowes family is based in Cairns... hardly around the corner from the Gold Coast. The difference in flight is 2 hours(ish), doubt that is enough to pull on the 'go home' factor

We'll just swap Bowes for Brodie if it goes both ways. E Z

Queensland.... all the same.... Mildura - Melbourne... Portland - Melbourne.... see the pattern??
The fact a town/city exists in the same state is a tenuous link, I dont know if you have noticed but Australia is quite large (look it up) and states such as WA/QLD especially.
The fact Cairns and Gold Coast are in the same state means nothing, Papua New Guinea is closer (850km) to Cairns than Gold Coast is (1700km), maybe he should go play for Port Moresby Dockers!

Its a thin pattern; when clubs were after Ollie Wines and were using the 'go home factor' he stated that Echuca (Victoria) was negligibly different (he used different words) in travel time to Adelaide than to Melbourne. Taylor Walker is from Broken Hill in NSW, but like 6 hours from Sydney, so you think there is any 'go home factor' for the Giants or Swans?

LOL... Better than fishing for Barra... Cheers Grizz...
