To risk asking what seems like a dumb question to all of you, how much have teams' jumper designs changed recently ? Somebody else seemed to imply in another thread that jumper designs have been evolving over the last few decades, but I don't recall many changes before the last few years.

I seem to remember WCE and Brisbane having yellow backs, Richmond having white numbers instead of gold, WB/Footscray minus the bulldog emblem, Fitzroy a different shade of red (and blue shorts) than the Brisbane Lions (the all maroon makes them look like moving blood clots), Collingwood and Geelong having more white, North Melboure having black (or dark blue ?) numbers, and St Kilda's striped socks. Am I forgetting any ? Somebody mentioned to me once that Melbourne's jumper was once much different but neither of us could remember it.

The only change to the Richmond jumper since they joined the competition in 1908 was for the sash to be removed off the back.

The method for putting numbers on jumpers has changed through the years - for instance, they were once white patches with black printed numbers which were sown onto the back.

I vaguely recall that when I watched VFL in the 80s that the Kangaroos wore a lighter blue, like a powder blue. Vertical stripes. Am I right on that or am I imagining things?

I believe Carlton's current emblem has only been in use for a few years; before that they had that old, wide distorted looking C interlocking with the block F and the smaller C.

Melbourne's jumper went to a lighter blue becasue of colour television. They said it would look better. Thank God we went back to the traditional blue. The basic design of the Melb. jumper has not changed throughout time though.

Oh man, we could fill this topic on our own!

Began with a yellow jumper with the two blue bits on each side (what were they meant to be? like the breast fillets of an eagle?) Anyway, they thankfully reversed the colours to a royal blue jumper with gold 'fillets'. Then we introduced home and away jumpers in 95, with the home one being navy and gold, and the away one remaining in royal blue and gold. They also both had a bit of white around the eagle logo and the fillets.
So now we have a navy, white and gold home jumper, and a rainbow away jumper, that are supposed to represent the Western Australian coast or something.
Really cant wait until the next change....

Eagle_Fan,
Which design do ya think yers should keep?
From an outsiders perspective, the current 'away' jumper is a dog's breakfast. (too many colors) It's all over the place. I thought the 95 'home' jumper with the gold/white trim on the navy background was the best looking uniform you guys had. How long did yers have that design? Was it only for the '95 season?

where's wally?

I liked the design we had for both premierships - the royal blue which really stuck out with the gold sides. The jumper from 1995 was ok too, to keep up with trends they had to change the jumper to a darker navy blue. Although our current jumper isn't my favorite, the club wouldn't of made the change unless it had good reason to. They did market research and got a mixed audience to comment on what jumper they would like to see the club wear.

Can't ever forget Essendon in their retro Red shorts with Simon Madden and his Damir Dokic beard. All because of TV they said!

Not a good look.

I don't miss the navy blue Eagles jumpers. The only time I've ever been confused by two teams' similar jumpers (watching on tv of course) was a WCE/Richmond match about four years ago. Even the umpires looked confused one a couple of occasions (again the only time I ever saw that). The fronts were sufficiently distinct but the backs looked almost identical.

I never saw WCE play Adelaide in those jumpers. Did WCE always wear the lighter blue ones for those matches ?

i LOVED the old royal "tropical ocean" blue of the eagles in thier premiership year wtih the white outline, it was simply awesome, it looked good, we stood out and it was synonomous with the eagles, the new ones look cool, but lacks the true eagle blue

i think it should be our home jumper
