I wonder if ownership of etihad makes a difference?

It seems like 1991 onwards whan the friday night became a permanent fixture

Personally, If have a large friday night game, but have a soft launch on the Thursday with a theme.

for example when kardina gets completed, or if the new perth stadium was ready for season launch

On another slightly unrelated point, now the AFL owns etihad, would it accommodate cricket more there, including a potential sheffield shield final?

If the fans continuously don't go or tune in (ratings) it will be stopped. Otherwise it will continue no matter how much bleating occurs.

Pretty simple I would have thought.

This.

It seems those that don't like it all tune in anyway (otherwise how do they know how bad it is?).

They're also clearly memorable games, as they get remembered, while the half of the openers for the past decade that hasn't included these clubs have been clearly been forgotten.

Football fans starved of football for six months are always going to tune in.

The "people watch so it must be good" justification is as moronic as the "why didn't your club ask for it" justification.

Why can't supporters of AFL largess just be honest and admit they benefit due to the AFL's insatiable desire to "maximise revenue"? It has nothing to do with competency or merit. Stop kidding yourselves. The have a long history of putting their financial interests ahead of sporting integrity & this is just another example of it.

Who is saying people watch it because it's so good?

As for how people are always going to turn up/tune in, etc...Then why doesn't that happen on the many occasions when other clubs have had this fixture?

Have these fans forgotten the pain of losing?

Any club with the opening game benefits from the promo, why its the Tiges & the Blues is a fair question.

Of course they are going to tune in as it is the first game of the season, they would tune in no matter who was playing. That does not mean it is a remotely interesting game for the neutrals though.

The season opener a couple of years ago Collingwood v Freo was a fizzer. Was stoked for the season to finally begin and it was over at quarter time.

I prefer the NFL method, GF repeat, great way to kick it off.

I would suggest not a ******* chance.
Cricket Victoria will have the junction oval all to themselves and opening Etihad for a crowd of under 5000 to turn up ain't gonna happen.

So Round One we have Richmond/Carlton on a Thursday night, Collingwood/Bulldogs on the Friday night & Essendon/Hawthorn on the Saturday night?

Well blow me down with a feather.

Thursday, March 23
Carlton v Richmond, MCG

Friday, March 24
Collingwood v Western Bulldogs, MCG

Saturday, March 25
Sydney Swans v Port Adelaide, SCG
North Melbourne v West Coast, Etihad Stadium
Gold Coast v Brisbane Lions, Metricon Stadium
Essendon v Hawthorn, MCG

Sunday, March 26
Adelaide v Greater Western Sydney, Adelaide Oval
St Kilda v Melbourne, Etihad Stadium
Fremantle v Geelong, Domain Stadium

I'm sure that's part of it, but if that's all it was then surely when it's other clubs, they would gain similar benefits, but they don't get the same results.

Hell, even if your little joke about the pain of losing is correct, then doubtless that means the ideal matchup for the AFL wold be 2 clubs with big fanbases (more people to 'forget') who haven't been particularly successful, so these two are ideal.

traditional powerhouse empires babylonia and mesopotamia to open the season

Rigged! Why can't the Assyrians get a blockbuster game???

More to point however...Traditional in the sense of the history of the AFL. Both teams having double figures for premierships means that over that history, they've been fairly powerful.

It's been a success so it continues. Lost of history, big ratings and good attendances. Not bad to open with a bit of a blockbuster. Will be massive if both clubs can get back up the top but at least some of the games have been quality.

Whats the big deal.
Guaranteed big crowd, tv audiances are huge for the first game, so it's a guaranteed earner.
A grand final replay doesn't mean its going to be a good game.
What if the opener was the Hawks and West Coast last year.
A final replay could be an absolute shellacking after trade/draft/ retirements.

Id be super excited to see a stinkney / dogs game - prolly wont bother with tiges / blues

and if enough people don't, it'll probably get changed...

Tell me, would you also watch Sydney/Bulldogs if it was round 2?

You sound like the supporter of a club that has won something on merit.

You haven't.

So there is no merit in the administration working toward this, and achieving it's goal?
There is no merit in the fans supporting it in a big way?

Just because your club can't seem to achieve anything (on merit or otherwise) doesn't mean other clubs can't and don't.
