This morning's training session nearly got away on time, with the boys arriving on the track at about 8.50am. Neil Craig spent quite a few minutes talking to the group before they proceeded onto Max Basheer Reserve.
The main group began their normal warm up of a light kick to kick before a jog and a stretch.
The restricted group consisted of Johncock, Jericho, Hentschel (who had his knee strapped today), Edwards, Armstrong, Cook, Kite, Gallman, Petrenko and Biglands (who came outside later). They also started with a jog and a stretch before moving onto some running, sprints and agility work, although for the majority of the session they worked on skills.
Following their usual warm up, the main group completed another kick to kick drill; this time briefly stopping to stretch and then moving back around 10 metres to further their kicks.
They then moved onto sharing the ball around the ground, generally just kicking, before again, stopping to stretch. This time, as the drill resumed, the trainers played as the 'defenders'. They mustn’t have done a good job, as they were forced to complete ten push ups once the whistle had blown.
The main group then moved onto to a faster moving drill, with several groups positioned around the ground. From the goal square, the ball would move to a leading player on the wing, before being worked back inwards and then down the centre for either a shot at goal at one end or a pass to a forward at the other end. First up, Brett Burton and Kurt Tippett were the 'go to' forwards, followed by Jonathon Griffin and Taylor Walker. Having made their lead and received the ball, they would kick to the on running player in the forward pocket. Kite, originally in the restricted group, joined in for this one.
The next drill, well I missed it as I was talking to Dave (afccomau), but I think they were working on goal kicking...
The following drill had the main group split into two. Down the left end of the ground, three groups were positioned, one in each pocket of the 50 metre arch and one at CHF. A kick would go across the ground, one pocket to the other, with the receiving player then passing onto a leading player running into the 50 from CHF. At the other end of the ground their were two groups receiving a pass from the goal square (Johncock was granted this task) and the having a running shot at goal.
Afterwards, Burton, Sellar, Jacky, Hentschel and Edwards were practicing their goal kicking.
The rest of the players were running through ball ups from different places on the ground. Several groups would rotate through and verse each other.
Gill, Stevens, Rutten, Moran, and Maric then stayed behind and went through some goal kicking with the above players.
It was then back to the rooms as the players and coaches prepared for their media photos and shots this afternoon.
