Went down to training this morning. Was a different session to what i have seen from the boys in the few i have been to so far this pre-season.

Absentees were Pav, Hase, Des, Farmer, Macca (rocked up towards end of session in civis).

Started off with the normal lane drills 20-25m kicks which got stretched out to about 45m kicks. Then went into cris-cross handball drill... skills were really sharp.

There was a lot of contact and one on one drills this time. Bell absolutely taught Schammer a lesson in one on one marking contests, scham i dont think took one mark. Sandilands is still is 2 grab mark. Brent Connelly was doing a pretty good job matched up on Michael Johnson.

The other drill was working at clearing the ball out of defence, harvey was pretty specific about what he wanted and kept stopping the drill and telling players where they should have been and what they shouldnt be doing. A quote "if your one of those tired players then you can get off the track now." The background on that quote is this drill was the last they did this morning, session of about 2 high quality hours in some hot weather and a couple of guys may have got lazy with a shephard or not running hard enough so he just reminded them basically he was watching without naming names.

Back to that drill clearing it out of defence, harves wants to use our hands and run from defence, kept telling the boys not to kick until on or past the half back line. Drilled that point into them.

My man Rhys Palmer was good again, not one target missed again... will start round 1 in my opinion.

Brock O'Brien, Scott Thornton, Kiwi and Ryley Dunn were just doing some basic ball skill work and some run throughs... Kiwi wasnt happy with whatever his injury is, overheard him say to kelly o'donnell (think it was kelly) "na its f..ked today"... hopefully nothing too serious.

Schammer came off the track early, looked like he injured a toe/foot, limped off anyway.

Blackie completed most of training before warming down a bit early and hitting the pool. Tarrant was the same.

Pratt grabbed his groin late in the session, looked in some discomfort.

Kepler was the worst ive seen him so far, foot skills shocking.

Mark Johnson training the house down, he is the loudest guy there, you would swear he is Captain the way he training and offering advice to the young guys (mayne, hinkley, palmer).

if i think of anything else ill add it

Thanks for the update pistol - certainly beats the nightly love fest we seem to be getting from eagles training. If we didn't get the updates here, you could almost believe that there is no training going on down at Freo.

Good to see my buddy MJ MkII fitting in well - his experience and leadership is going to be a quality addition to the team both on and off the field in '08.

him say to kelly o'donnell (think it was kelly)

The Kelly O'Donnell that's an assistant at the Dees these days??? ;)

Thanks for the update pistol. Hope the boys don't work so hard that we end up with a stack of unjured players before the season even starts... :o

I'm going to try and get down one day next week and will post another report - it's good to keep these going IMO.

I was at the same session and I might add that Black looked 100% better than he did this time last year after hip surgery. He was restricted to running but looked in damn good shape.

Soloman also looked as fit as I have seen him, this time last year I thought he was fat and overweight.

Peake was the one that really stood out for mine. He looks to have toned up, but not bulked up too much.

One thing about Kepler was it didn't matter what he was doing, he always looked buggered. If he was jogging 10 metres from a standing start at walking pace it looked as though he was spent. Meanwhile you would have someone like Michael Johnson next to him looking fresh and ready to go. I'm not sure what that says for either player, either Johnson isn't putting in or Kepler is out of shape.

hmmmmmm, not looking too good for old keps is it?

But what did I say about drafting people with stupid names huh? Stupid names come from stupid parents, stupid parents have stupid genes which in turn makes stupid players.

Any sign of smith? Noticed in the last training report it said he wasn't on the track, not out again yesterday?

Good to hear Blackie looking the goods. One of those players that seem to influence the rest of the team, purely on his match day form. If Des and Blackie hit top form this year, the bteam will run hot.

yes i was also at the session, didnt see chris smith.

hey has anyone noticed that josh head, with his MASSIVE jaw looks somewhat like roger ramjet??? maybe that could be a new nickname for jobby head.

black looked good, infact great.

my old man asked kiwi what the problem was and he replied "bit of a hammy mate" so i dont think it is serious but in saying that i went to training about a month ago and he wasnt taking part in training then either.

rhys palmer is a gun!!!! and all ours!!!!

im not one to defend people with stupid name and im definetly not one to defend stupid players, but in keplers defence i think that his hunch and his running style, plus his kicking style might make him look more tired than what he really is. shane parker always used to look buggered to me too but i think he was pretty fit.

peak did look really good, they had him playing at full forward during one of the long drilss in the abscence of pav taz des and wiz, he was looking really quick and he had strong hands, didnt see him drop a mark. where is sandi who was also leading out couldnt take a mark..... very frustrating.

whoever mentioned about solly being massive is dead right. i pointed it out to my brother and old man. he looks really fit, and unbelievably solid. i think another good year for solly is on the cards:thumbsu:

One thing I did forget to mention was Michael Johnson, he looked particuarly lean (but still fit). He looks to me like he has set himself for either a spot in the midfield or loose man in defense. He could not go man on man with his current physique.

That's a good sign, he should have improved his pace off the mark which was an issue. They might have him earmarked to play on the lead up forwards like Riewoldt and Hansen.

i dont know, but its my opinion that johnson isnt accountable enough as a backman to play on the reiwoldt type. and he has such good offensive skills that maybe harvs has said you can be our kouta. fingers crossed it works if thats the case

Anyone notice Crowley?

crowley with mark johnson is the fittest player at the club, he looks sensational. big big year for him. if he can stay injury free he will be a very important player for us. infact with palmer and solomon i think crowley is the player getting me the most excited just by watching him train

Lol your right IP... now i dont know who it was lol;)

Yea smith was out there for the whole session. I didnt actually pay too much attention to him tho sorry, was mostly watching my buddy rhys palmer.

so you were that weird guy at the training session who rhys was saying "look im not that way, im not interested, dont make me get a restraining order" pistol :D ahh well maybe you will have more luck with daniel gilmore

guess you haent seen johnson lately

....hmmmmm...... not that there's anything wrong with that but please....keep it clean......for the children

I have seen johnson but just coz the guy is looking buff doesn't mean he could run all day. I think our fittest players would be along the lines of crowley, foster, peake, dodd, smith and schammer, i think even ibbotson would be up there. Don't get me wrong i'm not saying johnson isn't fit and yes he is looking good, just think that the call as being fittest at the club was a bit extreme thats all

the reason i called him fittest at the club with crowley is not only based on the fact that at training he is looking buff. but because he and crowley look like they are the ones running out training better, because of his second efforts at training, and also because of his results in the running trials (he was in the top 3 for every endurance run i have seen) therefore i think the call is reasonable. the other player i would put up there is doddy
