Collingwood returned from the Christmas break and commenced preseason training on Monday 5 January.

The team participated in a series of tests inside the Lexus Centre before heading out to Melbourne Park to run six sets of 300 meter sprints.

After the arduous track session the players moved to the adjacent Gosch’s Paddock and completed a short training session.

There were a few notable absences from the full playing group with Dale Thomas and Scott Pendlebury set to return on Wednesday after an extended break due to their participation in the International Rules Series last year. Martin Clarke’s return flight from Ireland was delayed and he is expected to return to Melbourne in the following days. Travis Cloke missed the training session due to a superficial facial injury sustained over the New Year but was on hand to watch his teammates and will return for Wednesday’s training.

There were two new faces at training with the club hosting, Koby Stevens, a Gippsland Power player who will train for the week due to his involvement with the Australian Institute of Sport.

Collingwood’s 42nd pick in the 2008 AFL Rookie Draft, John Bennell, joined his new teammates in his first session at the club.

Bennell’s dashing speed which was on display during the 300 metre sprints. The 18 year old finished in the front half of the pack in every run.

Midfielder Ben Johnson looked like he benefited from the two-week break. His speed and endurance was admired by the coaching staff and teammates during the sprints.

The team then headed to the Paddock and was under instruction by strength and conditioning coach, Michael Dugina.

A short kicking drill focused on kicking to a player running to the wing and was soon followed by a handball drill comprising of the entire training group.

The team separated into an offensive and defensive side with the offense moving the ball through heavy traffic across 25 metres of ground.

Brad Dick, Ryan Cook and Heath Shaw stood out for the offensive side using their quick hands to get the ball down the ground. Nathan Brown and Leigh Brown used their size to excel in the defensive side.

A quick three minute address from head coach Micahel Malthouse saw the team partake in a full field training drill, moving the ball from the Yarra end down to the goals on the Swan Street end.

The drill encompassed kicking the ball out to the wings, and then moving it to the centre of the ground to be delivered into the forward fifty.

Alan Didak was the target up forward with Jarrad Blight and Leon Davis providing plenty of the ball.

Didak was substituted by Shane O’Bree who took a page from Didak’s book and finished the training session by snapping a 45 metre goal from the boundary line along the Punt Road end.

There will be an open training session at Gosch’s Paddock on Wednesday 7 January at 9:30 am.

Great - that's very innovative. Let's hope Mick is more creative when it comes to NAB selection and his gameplan in the season proper.
