And, I am working in and around Freo today, and as I was screaming past Freo Oval through "Gero's Roundabout", saw a mass of bodies on the ground, so went back half an hour later for a (seriously) quick stopover. I wish every day was as lesiurely as Monday was.... Unfortunatley it's not so... :o

1. JLo and Bellie kicking to each other away from the main group.
2. Didn't see Haddrill (but he could have been there in the large group who were out there)
3. Ryley Dunn looks fit and well.
4. Gilmore still working on his own - dodging and weaving through the cones, and doing sprints.
5. Tarrant still doing laps.
6. Hase still running end to end.
7. Saw Mourish out there with the main group (it's the hair!!), but couldn't pick Collard or O'Brien.
8. Biggest news was that both Dodd and Farmer were working away from the rest of the guys (but not together). Jeffrey was running laps, and Doddy was doing sprints on his own... in-house disciplinary action perhaps?? Dodd was certainly with the main group on Monday, and AFAIK Jeffrey isn't recovering form anything.... :confused:

was headland about? he will have to train hard at freo and and play well at subi to even start being considered this year.

How good he plays is very dependent on how well our 'in and under' types play, if they aren't winning the ball and getting it out to him, he is going to look very ordinary. That's why people bag him so much, when we lose he looks terrible, when we are winning (as evident in the second half of last year) he can look brilliant, hence the terms front runner, fair weather etc etc always popping up to describe him.

I would have thought that in the position our team is in, having just an above average player isnt good enough anymore

These types of players are only bagged because they are not willing to do the hard stuff when it counts, not willing to get hands dirty etc...

However is this good enough from a player of his age and experience?? We are not talking an up and coming player anymore. He will not fit into forward line anymore. Nor the backline as isnt accountable and cant play hard. And in the middle is he in front of: Peake, mundy, johnson, carr brothers, bell, cook, mcmanus, hase, dodd. Peake as he gets stronger will improve his kicking and can run better, and johnson and mundy and do that and win a contested ball.

Des is everybodies whipping boy. Even in the PF against Sydney Wallsie even got in on the act.

They replayed a play where Wallsie castigated him for not putting his nose over the ball when He appeared to overrun it.

I have been watching the tape the last couple of nights and Des had the ball and it was kicked out of his hands by Kirk.

But We were never going to win that game.

Dead right rip I saw and said it at the time.If they try and be first too the ball and fall they get trashed for not staying on thier feet and if they hold back to not over commit they get trashed,they just can't win

From memory the 3/4 time margin was 3 goals, and 50/50 umpiring decisions went against us late in that 3rd quarter resulting in Sydneys last 3 goals. If we had gone into the final quarter a couple of points down we would have had a real chance to win IMO.

Headland's performance during the finals warranted criticism, and while he will almost certainly play round one, his place in the side will be under pressure if he struggles in the first 2 or 3 rounds of 2007.

We played some inspired footy that term against the odds. Considering that there were 2 x 2 goal turnarounds earlier in the QTR when Justin wasn't paid a (mark/ arms taken / opponent face on - take your pick) on the goal line and Cookie not paid a (mark / arms taken / HTB / throw - take your pick) on any other day We would have won that quarter 8 - 2 goals or 7-3 goals. Both of those non-decisions led to a fast rebound and a goal.

And that is just the 3rd Quarter.

From memory there was also a sydney goal which came from a soft free just outside 50 and another once the ball was kicked inside the 50, which had Luke Darcy criticising the umpires.

That final seems so long ago now, yet the new season is still months away. :mad:

Had the opportunity to stop in at Freo Oval this morning for about 15 minutes... here are my observations (some probably similar to obseravations from before - apologies if I am repeating myself):

Pav - is a hard, hard worker. They were practicing set-plays, and he was positioned between 25 - 40m out, changing with either Murphy or Campbell as the one closer in. The others who were close by Pav were Solly and Browne... Pav was knocking a few high balls down, and Browney was crumbing off him. That surprised me a bit as I would've expected to see Browney with the midfielders, not crumbing off the tall forwards. Browne looks fully fit (and has a dumb looking ratty haircut).

Kiwi Campbell is a big bugger now. Fast and determined - he will be challenging Murphy I would think, and certainly keeping Murph at his best.

Solomon is a real leader out there, and is a very large man! He looks to have trimmed off a few kgs though, and certainly appears to be moving very freely. His knees don't look to be bothering him at all.

JLo has moved on from playing kick to kick and was running laps. He looks a little proppy, but was running fairly freely and fairly quickly. It definitely wasn't a slow, gentle jog.

Hase was doing sprints with Tarrant and Gilmore. He still looks a little uncomfortable, but has certainly increased his speed and intensity over the past couple of weeks that I have been sneaking peaks. Same with Tarrant - he was running pretty freely and pretty quickly, no grimaces, just sprints. Gilmore stopped just by me for a stretch, so I asked him what his problem was, and he said he'd just had a bit of a "tidy up" in his shoulder, and that he expected to be out there in full training straight after Christmas.

Haddrill was still kicking away from the main group with some coaching-type, using a tennis ball. I think he only came out for about 10 minutes, then he disappeared again.

Crowley ran up and down for a short while. The brace on his leg looks like that one JLo used to wear. All metal with a bed mattress attached...

Bellie was back right in amongst it, joining in with everything. Didn't see Parker at all. While on the "old fellas", Macca and Cookie are full of enthusiasm. Macca especially looks like he's 21, not 31 - bouncing all over the place, patting guys on the back, the bum, the head. He obviously wants to go out on his own terms.

Grover was running hard and looks determined and tough. Webster too.

I was impressed with Ryley Dunn. He's a big boy now, fairly fast and seemed to be pushing himself a fair bit (as they all were really). I hope he can translate that to the Big Time...

The Wiz was doing some sprints along the side. Not sure what's with him, but he was kind of with the other sprinters, but doing his sets after the others...

Thornton is back to full fitness and looks pretty quick. Drum looks bigger.

Mundy looked to be closer to the middle of the ground in the set plays, rather than down back. Hayden looked sharp, and Schammer was loud!!

The only new bloke I could pick out was Mourish (the hair!!) - I looked for the rookies, but could only see Copping, who of course isn't new.

Warnock - tall and bigger.
MJ has cut his hair off again, and was with the defenders.
Sandi - huge... as always.

I just had another thought. Last year Pav had 3 ops during the off-season (big shoulder one, plus minor ones on his knee and groin) and had virtually no pre-season to speak of. He didn't even start any contact stuff till late January... yet he still managed 71 goals, club B&F and AA selection in 2006...

Imagine Pav with a full pre-season under his belt. :eek: And judging by what I saw today, he is working very, very hard. :thumbsu:
