Maybe this was to ease him into it given his back issue. We will see whether this role continues or not. But I didn’t mind it. His kicking somehow got better during his injuring and now can kick further. His kicking was always a strong point.

Some of the biggest current myth’s on the Collingwood board in no particular order:

  • McReery is on the edge of best 22.
  • Macrae is a good kick.
  • McStay is on big money.
  • Kelly needs luck with injury.
  • We need to play both Cox and Cameron.

In context Macrae is the king of the floater and is largely a “safe” kick. He needs to add penetration in order to be rated as a good kick. If you compare his kicking to JDG’s it’s a non contest and I think JDG can be inconsistent.

McCreery on the edge of best 22 never ceases to amaze me. And the same with Ginni.

Two of the best kids we’ve recruited in years (N Daicos aside - and we were given him).

And it’s not like either of them is vanilla or easily replaced. Both bring something that no one else on our list does. They are both ‘different’.
For some Ginni -even in these pages there are some that have swallowed the pigswill coming from over the border - will never be forgiven for playing to the rules.

As for Beau well I would bet a lot on the interviews of players that he's crunched attesting to his value . . .

I think that you’re probably a little harsh on his kicking. Whilst many here do overrate it, he also displayed some really nice kicking in to the forward 50 in his first year. I think he’s quite good at weighting shorter kicks to advantage, and that’s what people remember, but I also agree that he needs to add some penetration to his long kicking, which hopefully will come with more strength and experience.

Am I? The post was intended to challenge anyone that rates his kicking as a strength whereas I generally see him as a solid kick no more no less.

Not to suggest your take is wrong, but I think his 51 kicks at AFL level is to small a sample size to suggest short kicks to advantage are a positive in his game. It’s a pretty niche measure unlike retention, penetration and decision making which can be measured with just about every kick. My guess as to why it’s rated is what I call the Steele factor where your kick rating lifts dependent on how prepared you are to use your opposite foot.

I think reliable and solid kick is probably is macrae. He just needs to trust himself to trust his kicking. You know what you get. Probably the type of player he'll become.
He definitely looks like becoming solid and reliable to me. A decade ago you'd call him close to a cert to become a second string mid at worst. But with roles now more specialised, he needs to find an AFL standard first string.

Training report: Monday March 13th, 2023.

Session 1 of round 1.

Players absent (minus the injured: Lippa, Dean, Kreuger)

Johnson
Howe

Rehab:

Draper
Harrison (running and a bunch of things, didn't seem injured. Management?)

Lighter side of a main session, there will be two main sessions, but this one more focused on a few drills and a little match play. It went for 1 1/2 hr, so a little bit less than usual.

Teams:

Black -

  • JDG
  • IQ
  • Maynard
  • Elliott
  • Mitchell
  • JDaicos
  • Noble
  • Pendles
  • McStay
  • Adams
  • Cameron
  • Frampton
  • Sidebottom
  • Hill
  • Crisp
  • Reef
  • Moore
  • WHE
  • NDaicos
  • Mihocek

White -
  • Bianco
  • Wilson
  • Allan
  • Macrae
  • Kelly
  • Ruscoe
  • Ryan
  • Murley
  • Murphy
  • Richards
  • McCreery
  • Ginni
  • Markov
  • Begg
  • Steene
  • Carmichael
  • Cox

* Reef was really lively up forward. Impressive and hard at the ball. His explosive pace off the mark is really noticeable. The coaches applauded him for his contest work and efforts. Is a real genuine chance for round 1.

* Oscar's ruck work is really noticeable, his tap work is really smart, gave his mids silver service.

During match play, the team was split into three teams. Blacks, whites and coloured vests.

* Ginni leaving no stone unturned as he works hard during his suspension, doing extra work with Macrae post session guided by Selwood

  • Kelly was on the wing opposite JDaicos.
  • Macrae looked to be on the other wing. Wonder if this is just an experiment or something going forward. A watch for wednesday.

Well for the black team today, thats what it was. Reef. Mihocek and McStay. But ive no idea how they'll line up on friday, but Reef is definitely pressing his claims.

Anyone know why AJ has been absent the last couple of training sessions?

I know it's not hos debut but goodluck to Reef.
Not sure.
Last I saw him was..last wed, but wasnt there on friday or today. Maybe he has a family issue. The club says family first. I didnt see him come off injured.

Would be surprised if Reef isn't named on Friday given he appeared in Black today.
Ditto WHE.
So 20 players in black, leaving 2-3 additional players (inc the sub).

Howe plays I expect, despite not training.
Players in White of note being Murphy, McCreery and Cox.
Perhaps Murphy misses and the other 2 play?

Ginnivan is currently a far more important and better credentialed player than McCreery. If the latter touched a ball more than once in the last practice match, and someone can prove it now, I'll shed my garments and stand naked on my balcony and yell 'Hooray ****' to attract attention.

Both best 22 though. I can see Beau playing midfield minutes eventually.

Eventually perhaps yes. From what I have seen in pre season, his headless chook runs are no more measured or purposeful than those he executed last year. All the talk of turning him into a midfielder is laughable if he cannot get his hands on the ball. If he actually manages to catch somebody and bring him to ground, he does a bloody good job of it. Unfortunately, like Jack Dyer used to say, when it comes to generating a possession, he seems to have a knack of getting to spots where the ball ain't.

Like you weren’t already cavorting naked on the balcony. Shouting “hooray” seems the only point of difference.

Gotta wonder what the coaching staff are thinking here
Doing everything they can to get him a career. Not a good enough defender, but is an athletic kid, and a decent kick. I don’t think he has the smarts or skills to make best 22 though. Just gets beaten or makes mistakes way too often

It’s interesting how Johnson seems to be on the outer with the selectors these days and no longer seems to be in our best 23 anymore.I watched a replay of our final against Geelong the other day,and thought he was quite good in that game.He kicked two goals and should have kicked three, but for missing an easy shot at goal in the first quarter. His marking was good and he seemed to be providing a good target as a lead up forward. The only thing he seems to lack is good pressure and his second and third efforts need to improve as well.If he can work on these issues I still think he can have a good career with us,as he does have talent and is a natural forward.

It was a practice match, who gives a crap?

Beau has more than proved his worth as a wrecking ball defensive forward already. To say that Ginni is far more important and better credentialed based on goals kicked is nonsense. They play different roles.
