I'm not writing anyone off yet. The club is in a process of lifting the culture to elite standards, as well as improving leadership. There will be player(s) who respond to the new culture who may have fallen by the wayside in previous years. These are young men who still need to be taught discipline at a higher standard than previously. Higher standards will improve players we thought didn't have it in them to play AFL football. We just don't have the luxury of players walking into an environment like Hawthorn or Sydney to fast track their development.

........well ok Jones is a write-off.

We've done it for the last three years and we have a fourth one on its way.
2014: 12
2015: 15
2016: 12 (13 really but then we took on Gallucci again)

Minimum 10 players and possibly 13 again.
I'm not convinced we will be turning the list over quite so aggressively going forward. We already don't have a second round pick, and very little trading commodities (that we would want to get rid of). It's all good and well to say we need a big turnover, but how do we get better players for peanuts?

Part of the reason we have turned so many over in the past few years is because we have accepted salary dumps from GWS for a better trading price on our long term targets. With our youngsters maturing I think we will target more confirmed talent and use the extra resources to secure our young stars long term.

If Gibbs leaves, we trade out our 2018 first-rounder, a few blue baggers have breakout seasons....... there's 3-4 first-rounders on the trade table.

And that's without getting too creative

We are in for another big clean out this year......we have huge B grade depth..it might be 11 or even 13 who knows but we got people signing off and even some possibly who may still want to move on[Gibbs]..
We wont even clean out properly and following year will see another easy 10....an indication of our B grade woes are summarised in our Northern results, please dont underestimate the significance of these results...woeful
{SOS already has and will continue to have a field day}..we needed help and got it,and now we are trying to invigorate a new team across the board, via appropriate means. What does this all mean?.....it means a lot of work...i think look at SOS's body language in his interviews will give you the message.
We have already seen guys like Marchbank and Pickett willing to join us at Carlton...we will attract much better players soon and for less.

That's clearly a very good point and one I used to excess last year, when people were talking about moving on contracted players, Jones, Jaksch etc.
We ultimately retained Buckley & Graham also, for this very reason.

This is the wrong thread to discuss this in depth but it won't be difficult for SOS to clear at least 10 players....................one way or another.

Korcheck's issue is and always will be the same: time. There are so many little nuances to our game, technical skills and abilities that you must execute all at once, that make it difficult for mature aged guys to pick up. He's had no exposure to the game until 18-odd months ago and is coming from such a long way back getting decent footy out of him at VFL level would be extraordinary. He's too late to the game and will require patience that won't be rewarded.

What I saw of him last year was hardly revaltory. Marking was inconsistent. Skills poor. Decision making very stop start. The mechanics of the game demand a fluency I don't believe he'll be capable of. It doesn't matter what league or level you play at, the more guys you have incapable of contributing meaningfully no justifying their place in the side - the more guys others have to carry - the less competitive you'll be.

The Irish guys get it because the DNA of the two games is quite similar; in fact, one could argue the helter skelter, no stoppage nature of Gaelic football means your decision making under pressure must be exceptional. Therefore once they get to AFL some aspects of the game are actually a little slower for them.
The "mechanics" of the game are set by the Rules of the game. The Rules have changed big time for ruckmen.

With no more 3rd man up and previous rule changes designed to take much of the body skills away from ruck work, converted basketballers have a real advantage. Korcheck's height and strength suggest a durable unit for this position. IMO his development over 2016 was fine for a first year player and I am very much hoping to see him get games at AFL level this year.

Otherwise our ruck stocks are poor. Kreuzer at 200 cm without a big leap is now short for a ruckman and his restricted game time suggests he has never fully recovered from the compartment syndrome injury/knee injury. Phillips is a bit taller with perhaps a bigger spring but is not as good a footballer as K and doesn't look like he will develop to be as good as the best. Gorringe has shown nothing.

The Club would be right to be patient with Korcheck.

Yes, i remember you saying this quite recently.
Didn't you say that he pulled out once, not at least twice?
Nevermind, maybe a team mate called him out of the contest?
The one that really sticks in my mind was a marking contest where he and one opposition player were coming from the opposite direction and he pulled out of the contest. It happened right in front of me which is why I recall it so vividly. I realise not every player needs to be at the bottom of packs and the like, but when its your turn to go you just have to go.

How do you figure this Windy? I would imagine that restricting the ruck contest to the ruckmen only makes a skilled ruckman more important than they have been for quite some time. The only difference between now and the early 2000s and prior is that the rucks technically start the contest separated - this doesn't diminish the physical/bodywork skill set, it just alters it slightly. A great ruckman is worth their weight in gold from this season again.

Jaksch and jones would have been gone already and a few others..we are carrying quite a lot at the moment.
In the present environment at Carlton we are seeing a lot of 1 year contracts offered..i think most is a three year contract at the moment at the club.

What happens when he's not in a ruck contest?

You could be right but with every rule changes to rucking that has occurred since Big John's day (and there have been plenty) each one has been designed to favour the ruckman with height advantage over a ruckman who can use his body to advantage. Eliminating the 3rd man up means that the less talented taller ruckman only has his direct opponent to beat. Much like basketball. Combine that with the rules preventing pre-engagement can only assist a big, tall unit like Korchek to the detriment of a smaller, more skilled ruckman like Kreuzer.

Like you say, a great ruckman will be an asset. What has changed is what now makes the ruckman great.

Let me try and bracket them and happy to be wrong:

Gone: Jones, Gorringe, Lamb, Gallucci = 4
On a knifes edge: Buckley, Graham, Boekhorst, ASilvagni, Jaksch, Korchek = 6
Possibly to be let go: Rowe, White, Thomas, Casboult = 4
Possible retirees: Simpson, Armfield = 2

There's 16 players just for starters, that may be hard to argue about not being there in 2018.
Move Lamby up a rung, I'm an unashamed fan
