There are a lot of players not really being taken into account for a run through the midfield- pickett is one, Boekhorst has been all but written off, cunningham has been spoken about with some uncertainty, sumner could run through if fit, C. Curnow is a distinct possibility, polson even Byrne. If even only one of these players steps up and becomes a good mid ,we have leapfrogged ahead in our development.

It's very rare for Top 5 picks to miss two entire seasons, and Pickett would have most certainly played a good chunk of last year had he not had the fracture. His pre-season form was good and he would have added another element to that stellar GWS lineup. He was being talked up quite a bit on the GWS board at the time.

He's been mostly talked up as a half-forward who can rotate through the middle, but his most natural position is as centreman who'll have stints forward - and usually impact. He looks most comfortable looking ahead of the field and orchestrating the play; much like SPS. It'll be beneficial for him to be developed as mid next year as I think that is where we'll get the most bang-for-our-buck and where he'll flourish. It'll take some time getting him up to speed but if we develop him properly, he'll become a very high calibre player.

Also wonderful to hear the reports on Fisher. I was hoping he'd get to us on draft night and it sounds like he's fitting in and showing his smarts. A few of the senior players have commented on his footskills and general nous'. We're going to have a pretty potent young midfield contingency.

It's mostly due to a lack of exposure. Boekhorst has copped some heat, but he hasn't done himself too many favours and maybe last year was an indication of how far back he really is in the grand scheme of things. He has nice skills but lacks situational awareness and isn't particularly tough. His running patterns can also be all over the place.

Cuningham has shown bits and pieces but will also need to improve his production value. He makes reasonably good decisions but is prone to taking the easy option; which isn't always a bad thing but he's got plenty of class and skill to use to his advantage. It will mostly be a confidence thing with him.

Sumner had stints in the midfield this year but looks more at home on a flank. He's pretty wiry still and doesn't have the inside skills to compete.

Curnow has only had very limited AFL experience but has the tools to become a full-time inside mid. Of all the young players capable of making the transition he'd be the most adroit choice. He's got freakish skills, a big body and the kind of confidence/cockiness that good players have.

Polson will likely develop into an outside midfielder, but will start as a forward flanker I suspect. He moves well through traffic and makes good decisions with ball in hand, so he'll come under some consideration. He'll be a slow burn though.

I'm a massive proponent of having Byrne develop into a midfielder once he's had some time in defence. His lateral movement and ability to find space would make him very handy playing off a wing. He's also a powerful, accurate kick and we saw glimpses of his attacking capabilities this year. He delivers the ball well and would add some class to our midfield. Obviously though, he'll need some time to recover and then re-cement his spot.

I'd say by and large our next-gen rotation will be comprised of Cripps, SPS, Pickett, CCurnow, Fisher and whoever we take in the draft this year. With some shrewd trading, we might add a gun like Shiel, Kennedy or Hopper into the fold too.

Very kindly put.

Don't want to be too disparaging but yeh he does lack some footy IQ, which is difficult to teach. His best hope is becoming a Brad Hill type, but even Hill has a few weapons; namely his endurance and speed.

I'd be surprised if he was on the list at the end of next year and a testament to a horrible 2014 draft.

It was mentioned a while ago too - I imagine it's a 7kg drop from the end of the season or earlier when we were talking to him while he was injured. So 7kg in 3-4 months for a footballer is very achievable, but is also quite a lot in the sense that he was very overweight.

Pickett is our most important recruit i reckon. If he stays fit. And performs to his junior level. ****.. we'd have accelerated the rebuild a full year almost in his acquistion alone.

Everyone on here is begging for another top 5 mid over the next two seasons... we may have just got one for chanhe
Totally agree, he's an sps'esque pickup already with experience in the system.

Can you lose 7 kilos that quickly?
I heard a theory a long time ago.

Basically that the combined net weight of the human race always stays the same. So if a person, group of people or entire country lost weight, somewhere on the planet people are gaining that weight...

I think I know where Pickett's 7kg ended up....
