Training Training Reports, Pics 2017

Hopefully this has them all. Some crappy pics but some ok shots of some decent 8 packs and Charlie looking like a God.

Carlton open training GC

Charlie sure is an impressive specimen but how about Phillips? Looks like he could pick up a tree trunk and swing it around his head.

No. No we don't.
Hope our blokes would let their football do the talking and leave that 'courageous' s**t to to us idiots on the other side of the fence.

Must disagree Ken.

Even though we are so far away from becoming a great side you gotta aspire to become one. All great sides have that "mongrel" factor about them and we quite honestly have not had that for decades. Im not talking show pony types (bell) or punching bag (robbo) types but genuine hard ass players.

Yes its a balance but at the moment we have nothing.

Love this pic from a couple of days ago.

I say it every off-season, I don't want to recognize my team next year.

I can't wait til we get to the off-season where you do want to recognise your team the following year...

Yawn...back to the footy folks.

Encouraged by the reports on SPS, McKay and SOSOS.

I know he needs a couple of seasons in the gym, but Harry McKay must be played. We haven't seen a KPF who is a great shot at goal and able to mark above his head since, ummm, I'll get back to you..

We need SPS to play as we need class.

We need SOSOS to develop quickly as we obviously need forwards that can make an impact. Don't expect too much however, as it is only his second year.

Rowe will play full back whilst Marchbank develops..

Quick summary of my Thoughts from Open Training - Sunday 18th December @ Southport Sharks

Won't take up much time here as Pumpy and rp84 did an incredible job with their reviews from the open training. I must admit that with all the fans (great turnout) and the players spread all across the field, it was difficult to focus on individuals... especially after I caught sight of SOS Jnr lurking off the field with some media...

Turned up just after 12:30 to see about 800 fans spanning the fences - quick shout out to the QLD Carlton Supporters Club (sorry, still haven't joined the FB group guys) who were there giving free snags out. I didn't have one on account of my dietary preferences but love the initiative all the same.

Most of the session seemed to be - in my mind and as expected - less tailored to game-plan stuff and more to general skills. Judging by the different focus from the Friday when I was there, it's clear to see that Bolts and co didn't want to give the few media types that were there any big indication of our secret plans*.

Guys that stood out to me:

Gibbs - I gave him huge wraps on Friday and will admit he's 'my boy' but seriously... this guy looks like he never wanted to leave. Based on his words to the media yesterday (Faifax interview if memory serves), it was never about his footy. You can just tell he's happy to back in Navy Blue and is leading the way on the track - looks as fit as ever and is raring to go. Dare I say that Bryce may be a sneaky Brownlow chance in 2017?

McKay - Seeing young Harry in the flesh is outstanding - met him last year as well, just a massive human. Grown a few more centimetres but just needs to get some meat on those legs. Maybe he and Cripps can see a calf-specialist... alternatively he could just hang out with Gussy Sheehan and Jack - both who have massive trunks. Anyway, Harry moves so well and kicks supremely - probably the best kick of any of our forwards already. If he stays fit, he should play 10-15 games next year and start his path to becoming a real force.

SOS - Like Harry, Jack has definitely grown a few cm since last year. But it hasn't stopped there for the only-recently 19 year old (crazily young) as he has seriously filled out. I know this has all been said, but he is a different man altogether from the one we drafted at Pick 53 last November. Will play every game and I strongly believe he could lead out goal-kicking in 2017.

Cuningham - Dave goes a bit unnoticed out there among the glitzier types and Liam 'explosive animal' Jones - but when you catch sight of him, it's hard not to be impressed. Has made real inroads in 2016 and expect him to overtake the likes of Graham, Bucks and Boekhorst to stake a spot on the wing in 2017. Just does everything well - quick, skillful and moves well - almost Murph-like at times.

Murphy - Speaking of which... he looks 100% and leaving his 2016 self in the shadows. Really hoping for a clean run to Round 1 as Murph will instantly make us better. I know he isn't the most natural leader, but is the best guy to lead us right now - has truly grown into his shoes, so to speak.

SPS - Caught sight of young Sammy Seton a few times and concur with other reports on him - just looks ready. Not really that big (seemed only a touch taller than Bolts from where I was standing) but is the perfect size relative to his height. A lot has been made of his skills, and he kicks the ball beautifully it must be said, but his attitude and character (can just tell everyone loves him, but Bolts to the bootstudder**) are the things that will see him become a big part of Carlton in the very near future.

Weitering - Was on a reduced load Sunday, on light duties with SOS, Rowe et al but really seemed to be enjoying himself. At one point he was having a laugh with SOS and I couldn't believe my eyes! The Weiterbot is evolving (good or bad, I'm not sure) and body-wise, he's a beast. It's easy to tell that he puts everything he has into every aspect of footy - not least his own body. So chuffed we grabbed this kid.

*note that I didn't really notice anything worth being secretive about when there on the Friday. And even if I did... we finished with 7 wins in 2016 so probably don't need to stress about hiding our game plan so much.
**do we still have a bootstudder? Is that a thing? Have I just stumbled across one of Thy's memories from 1920?

I haven't seen Pickett yet and for all I know, he may be under instruction to 'relax' a bit.........I doubt it but maybe.

February/March will be very telling as it always is. The heat is really turned up and some players just push themselves beyond the standard and somehow luckily get better results.

Oddly though Smith was one of those players that had a purple patch in February but dropped off soon after.
Came back in January looking terrific and showed up many a team-mate through drills, but whether it be the confidence, endeavour or will, things just didn't hold up as the season opened up.

Tough game this one and for all the talent you may have, drop off just a little and you may find yourself playing in a league, you didn't really want to be playing in. Play in that league long enough and some players just don't recover.

i suspect this might be accurate, coming from a broken foot he would be under instructions not to push it too hard and ease into his workload. Easiest way to get re-injured is to push too hard too early.

1. I wasn't being patronising towards you, but you still 'needed' to make a statement to...........what? Points score?
2. I wasn't being patronising towards Matty, but you seem to know that I was, even though I'm saying I wasn't. Freud has nothing on you.
3. I'm often condescending? I'll challenge points and have my own point of view and back that point of view. Is that condescending?

Maybe you're just taking too much notice of me. You best put this condescending bastard on ignore. It will be easier for you that way.
.........and if all the above seems to be condescending towards you.........It is.:)

Now stop trying to act smarter than you are.

What an analysis. Just don't be a rude, pretty simple.

Rowe is still the gorilla handler.

None of the rest can push around the really big guys yet .

Didn't see a lot of Marchbank, but he did suprise me due to his size. He's a big boy. Looked raring to go too. I think we'll see a fair bit of him sooner rather than later, and he'll transition to our gorilla tamer I expect.

Thanks to the coasters for the reports - matty, pumpy, mr jones, reubs, MSR, Cobalt, McConvilee and rp84. Appreciated the info, pics and videos a lot. Will keep me from champing the bit until the January sessions.

For those that have Twitter, get your questions ready ...............

Agree HEB, it's a balance.
But, there's a difference.
Bring on the 'mongrel'.
Just leave the ******** type s**t out.
