Let me replace goal square with forward 50 then. Either way, I'd prefer a heavier Jack.

I would have preferred he stayed the same weight personally and simply worked harder on his endurance while staying at that weight which also gives him the ability to keep that leap.

He can push up the ground a bit when he's getting double teamed but with his elite reading of the flight, contested marking and body work his best position is playing prodominantly out of the square against gorillas. To do that he needs as much weight as he can. A paltry 90 kg which is the same or less than some of our mids is way too skinny. He only got to a semi acceptable level of 93 kg last year (when he gained 6kg) which made him able to compete against bigger defenders and was a big reason for his improvement IMO.

Agreed. Needs to be at least 93kgs. Id prefer 95-98

If we are going to win more games of football than we lose, we need a CHF capable of providing a target for our forward thrusts. Riewoldt has already demonstrated abilities in this position in 2009. At FF he can largely be negated by good sides, it will be much harder to negate his influence if he has more room to move.

We can much easier find a FF than a CHF.

I agree with Beaver. Even though CHF is not what it used to be, you do need a target coming out of defence, around 70-80 metres from goal. This is a tough role to play - FF is easier, especially if the FF is the second-best forward and consequently the bloke up the ground is getting all the attention. It's quite possible the club is going to give Griffiths a crack at FF: Jack wins the ball at HF and Griff is one-out with space to use his pace. You can't complain on one hand that we lack a spread of goal kickers, and then criticise attempts to address the problem before you've even seen them. For all we know Jack will play pretty much the same role anyway, or Griffiths might be perfectly suited to FF and having two guns is better than one. At this point in our development it is worth finding out.

Between them, Hardwick, Lade, Leppitsch and Campbell played 965 AFL games, won six premierships as players and another as assistant coach, 10 best and fairests and eight All-Australian jumpers over a combined 67 years at the top level. And yet some people who attend a handful of games a year think they know better and are quibbling over 3kg.

Agree that we need a CHF desperately, not sure I'd be throwing players into stop-gap roles though. To me, Riewoldt's best position and where we will get the most out of him in the long-term is clearly FF. We will see how it works out. If he's getting double teamed that just opens it up for other options.

Even then, 90kg is too small for any KPP, CHF or FF.

It's not about how much he weighs, it's how strong he is. You might make sense in your own eyes but to plenty of us you're just finding something to complain about before you've even seen it.

Names are just names. They're yet to achieve anything. I think they put some good foundations in place last year and got a lot right but I disagree with intentionally slimming down Riewoldt and moving him away from the goalsquare. Also not a fan of picking up Miller and Hislop again. They're not going to be perfect no matter how much you hope. As I said, we will see how it turns out. Don't have to blow smoke up Hardwick and co's arse like everyone else if I disagree with a decision.

I don't think you need to rip "2+2 is 4" discotek for not basing his opinion on the decisions of people with more information than him. He is calling it as he sees it. We both disagree with him, but we can beat his reasoning with better reasoning alone. Otherwise this place will have no rich discussion.

Riewoldt is no stop gap at CHF Barnzy. Like I said he played it quite well at 20 years of age. Better to throw stop-gaps to FF than CHF.

(sorry PJ), Barnzy i agree with you. For years we tried to convert players into other roles (Daffey into a midfielder when he was a natural HFF, Krakour etc). This kid is a natural FF. Yes he may need to "diversify" occaisionally, but he's a FF. Build around him. Let's not re-invent the wheel.

jacks greatest strength is his reading of the ball in flight, his weight has nothing to do with it, if anything he will be able to leap even higher and run a little faster when leading for the ball, he will be fine.

he isnt one of those blokes that needs to be a massive unit to mark the ball, he is a smart player, uses his body weight perfectly.

Went and saw training today, but sat and enjoyed it more than noticed it. I did pick up that Taylor seems unfit - the team had three lines at FF and ran with about 5sec between the groups right to the other end. They did it about 6 or 7 times I'd say, with a positional-break of about 10sec whereby they ran to their positional groups on the ground and then ran back to the other goal end. By the end they all looked knackered, but Taylor was getting overtaken by the group behind him while the rest of his group ran 10m ahead. Not sure if this is to be expected due to missing a chunk of pre-season or what, but it was interesting.

Also noticed that Vickery - when he was training (he, Grigg and a couple of others only did some drills) dropped a couple of easy marks out in front, Taylor and Derickx missed some easy 20m short passes by fair distance and Deledio looked indecisive once or twice. Outside of that, the training ran pretty smoothly although there were a couple of times in the match-type drill where the defenders, who were significantly outnumbered by the attackers, managed to get the ball and goal despite their 4 or 5 fewer numbers. Good signs for them, but not good signs for the attackers.
