AFL Insiders (Sirengate has posted a thread with the link in it), did a segment on Mayne.

At the end of the segment, Alastair Lynch made the comment that when Pav is in the side, Mayne goes up a notch as Pav takes the key defender.

Pav is vital to our structure.

Now how about that training!

For all the talk about the great Pav and his lack of forward pressure when we don't have the ball I for one agreed with every poster up and until his return after the 3 week suspension .

The Pav for the first time I can remember was chasing opposition backs and not just for 3 or 4 paces like the old pav but serious chases over 20 and 30 paces .

His recovery and fitness has improved quite a substantial amount .
Mind you he was having a lot of work done by the physio on his lower back when he took a couple of knocks but then he came out again and was working just hard .
So old the dog is hearing the RTB message and is putting in the work off the ball the same as the rookie.IMHO:thumbsu:

I'd still like to see Pav chase with a bit more intent though. No harm in asking for 110% effort.

I'm not so sure. Nowadays his inability to change direction quickly means that he's more likely to give away a free when trying to lay a tackle. Perhaps better that he just go to an unmarked opposition defender to cut off the handball receive, or try and corral the player who has the ball in hand, or just race to his designated spot in our defensive 50.

Show me the money

The latest at Brissie is that Roos hasn't commited to them before or after they sacked Voss .
The members are calling for the management Committee and the CEO's head .

The commentators on the show you can't remember

The leading commentators I can't remember think a Key forward is especially important in finals.

Well, you've been around long enough to forget more than most. A key forward yes, but is that necessarily Pav?

I think it might have been Kingy that said it. He's on a lot of shows, so take your pick.

Hopefully Salim will find out John and let us know, but I will be down there tomorrow so I hope it is Freo. I couldn't bare another Jason Webber death stare.
The Freo website says that the next training session at Fremantle Oval will be on Tuesday 27 August. So it looks like they're at Subiaco tomorrow.

Matbe you'd better get ready for the death stare, Harry!!

I'm pretty sure they are the open sessions with the autographs and what not.

Didn't he have a bit of a stinker against Adelaide last year?

He was injured and had three operations in the following preseason.

Yep, he was absolutely cooked. Pretty much won the game off his boot against Geelong, was 29 years old, and had a decade of being a leading and team-reliant player on him. You can't expect him to be that consistent at that age, and to berate him and not give him an excuse is a bit OTT. I remember being surprised at how taped up his feet were after the game... just absolutely buggered all over.

He'll come in a lot fresher this finals series, though. He's bee getting his touch back and getting better in every game so far.

It was actually Ben Dixon. ;)

I can't agree that Pav is vital to our structure, because Ross has the team to the point where the structures hold up whoever is playing a particular role, and we have won plenty without him.

I do, however, acknowledge that I'm being way too harsh on Pav and that he would be enormously beneficial in any game, but more particularly a final. I'd still like to see him chase, but I've been banging on about it for so long now I'm probably on automatic.

I hope he's training the house down and has an injury free run to the GF.

I agree with that.

However, I reckon Pav's putting in a bit more chase these days, he's improved a touch for mine. Of course he's coming from a pretty low base to begin with so take that what it's worth. I still see him as a defensive liability, and oposition coaches know that. However, we are working the Ross Lyon defensive system so much better now that we can carry that fwd who will only be able to put the semi-chase in so I think we're OK in that regard.

Everything else he brings to the table makes up for that. He's not 'vital' to the structure, but he's the best we've got by a long long way at slotting into the structure we have.

The term 'vital' here can be construed in so many ways. I look at Pav's inclusion in the following manner:

1) He is our Captain
2) He takes the best key defender (and most times the loose man)
3) He can win a game off his own boot
4) He is our best 50+ meter kick for goal
5) He has the stamina to provide a target up the wings for 4 quarters
6) He is fresh and barring an unfortunate injury will provide maximum firepower for the finals series
7) He is the ONLY Key Forward we have
8) He makes us BETTER
9) He is a Champion of not only this club but the AFL
10) He bleeds PURPLE

And just for interest's sake, Pavlich averages 2.3 tackles a game compared to Nick Riewoldt's 1.5. That should give a pretty good indicator of how a star key forward works out in RTB's gameplan.

Ben Dixon, Alistair Lynch, easy mistake :p

I would argue that he is vital to our structure, especially come finals time. Coaches know what he is capable of. Put any other of our forwards in the 50, and coaches throw a defender down there, put Pav in our 50, they consider putting two defenders down there.

It's just the thought of what he could do. You can say the same about Goodes and Jono Brown. Probably not the threat they once were but still have enough to make the opposition worry.

So, you're suggesting Taberner gets a game ahead of the Pav in September?

It may just be semantics, but I construe the term vital to mean exactly that - vital. As in absolutely necessary or essential. Pav is desirable, but not vital. Those tackle stats are impressive though.

So, you're suggesting Taberner gets a game ahead of the Pav in September?

No, but what's his defensive pressure like?

Our side with Pavlich > Our side without Pavlich.

His mere presence causes defenders to jump at shadows.

Mayne, Ballaz and Walters all cry out with childish glee everytime Pav brings the ball to ground.

You need talls up forward.

Ross likes talls up forward and I back his judgement.

If I had to choose the talls up forward I would choose the clubs greatest ever goal scorer over any other talls on our list.

I don't think that Pav is lacking in defensive pressure considering that his direct opponent will be about the same height and weight as him and likely slower without the great marking ability he has.

Please note: Even though this post contradicts the great David King (lol) I still believe it to be true.

He is vital to structure

His ability to lead up the ground and take marks straightens the team

His ability to free up the smaller forwards

His ability to kick long range goals - set or field

Whenever he comes back from injury and takes a strong contested mark I remember why he makes Freo better (even if they are winning without him).

So if Pav was unavailable for a grand final, you wouldn't turn up because we would have no chance of winning?

Pretty sure they could win; but it would be even more remarkable, but now not so much surprising victory
