Bluey is such a character ,he has so many stories about freo and freo people I recon there's about 3 books for the taking but between the lawyers and the mafia we might never see them in print .

Its great to hear that Pav and 211 are training with the main group and looking good .

I agree with the feelings of others that they should be given as much time as possible before they are playing so that we have them in good shape for the pointy end of the season

Tab's ability in going working both ways has obviously impressed Ross, using him as an example to the rest of the group.

Spirit Level and couldhavebeen both make great points. Couldhavebeen is right, arguing for saving full strength for "the pointy end" of the season, in which we all want to excel in. But as Coach Lyon is wise to constantly remind everyone listening, the Finals are no guarantee after a ripping start -- ask last year's Bombers. Spirit Level is right, asserting that even at less than 100 percent, Pav draws defenders and his mere inclusion in the side makes the opposition more accountable, as does Sandi's. So why not work them in slowly, starting with limited time against Geelong, then build them up? The top four is no guarantee -- notice I'm NOT looking ahead to our other opponents on the calendar -- so we have to make moves that give us the best chance to get there. That means playing our best, even it means in fits and starts at first. What a morale boost it would be. Pav and Sandi are seasoned pros. If they're ready to go, but a bit underdone, just manage their time. Our other boys have shown they can pick up the slack if they falter.

It would be great. But Ross demands that his players play with 100% tempo. It would be too risky and would make them a liability on the ground.

Except for one thing: What if, in the end, we miss the top four because of a close loss to Geelong -- without Pav and/or Sandi? Then we might be kicking ourselves later and wondering what might've been if we'd played both, or one of them, even for a little bit.

I totally agree with you .
It would be dangerous to make them wait until the finals to start playing them as they will need game time to get back to full fitness and up to best possible speed of the game before then .
Also the team would need to play with them to get the structures right never mind the game plan that would need reworking since we have changed it so much without them being there .

True but I guarantee the outrage will be much worse if we rush him back and lose him for the next one-two months.

Which could be countered with; What if we miss the top 4 because we rushed either, or both of them, back to soon on a windswept, freezing cold Skilled Stadium?

It is, without doubt, the least player friendly ground in the AFL.

Think Buffalo, or Michigan, without the snow.;)

True, whiteoak, but aren't we an anywhere, anytime team? Having those guys out there isn't gonna cost us a top four spot. Get a big scalp in beating Geelong on their turf and you send a pretty powerful message to the other clubs that'll stick in their heads from now until September. Too bad we're not all on the match committee to have these debates -- or at least flies on the wall to hear the real thing! :)

OK, gotta ask...I know WHAT a Bluey is. And I know we're not talking about Guy McKenna. But who's this "Bluey" you guys are posting about? Sounds like a legend!

Bluey is an ex South Fremantle player and a wharfie who hangs around the club and has played with a lot of the legions of the club .

He's very well known in Fremantle and is a friend of many ex East Fremantle players as well .

A good all round guy , very friendly and a true dink um Aussie .
He tells a good yarn and has a terrific sense of humour .

Absolutely we are.

But that doesn't translate into rushing players, (regardless of who they are), back before they are ready, and in highly unfavourable circumstances.I.E: extra travel, and generally inclement weather.

We aren't going to win every home and away game, that's just normal. But pushing recovering players too hard, simply because it is Geelong AT Geelong lacks common sense imo.

And I very much doubt that Ross would even consider it.

Remember that Pav and Sandi have only rejoined full training for a week. That's a very, very skinny time frame for two senior players coming back from surgery.

All good points. Guess that's why none of us are AFL coaches or team doctors, right? But it's fun playing those roles in the forum! :) And thanks, couldhavebeen, for the info on Bluey. Just gives me yet another reason to want to go to Freo. Sounds like Bluey's a guy with stories dying to be told. I'll Google him in a minute, but anyone know if any newspaper stories have been written on him?

Stop dancing around it Harves....Bluey is Mark "Jacko" Jackson.

He is one of the guys always down at training but he doesn't post on here.

Sums him up very well. He is the heart and soul of Fremantle based football. He's always at training in a pair of "tracky dacks" leaning on the fence. He knows the groundsmen as well so they never tell him to stop smoking inside the ground.

His stories are hilarious and he knew Bon Scott pretty well, as did Salim who went to school with him. It's great standing next to Bluey at training and hearing his views on the game and how the players are looking.

There should be a statue of him next to the "The Flying Slav" in the garden in the roundabout out the front of the ground.

Is he acknowledged by the FFC officials, when he down at the ground? Not that it is essential but would seem like a nice thing to do, hot cup of tea occasionally, an invite to speak to the players informally, the odd ticket to a game.

Just on Pav and Sandi, I don't think they are being rushed back into the side at all as they were both given a longer period of time to recover than what was first anticipated. Yes there was a couple of minor set backs I know, but hey are both back in full training now and doing all the work required to resume their places in the side.

Unlike with Mora who is not doing the body contact drills as yet.

Pav is the one really required, as is having Walters back too, as our forward line is our weak spot at the moment.

Ross said at his presser last week that he knows that they need to get games into Pav and Sandi before the finals, but he is also aware of the risks of bringing them back too early.

I know I am alone in my thinking here, but I think Pav and Sandi would be available for selection next week. Pav trained again fully this morning and just completed a recovery session at Cottesloe Beach.

I think he is being fast tracked for match fitness purposes.

Well he was certainly acknowledged by the "String Bag" (to quote Bluey himself) on Friday morning.

Everyone down there would know who he is as he has been there since day one.
