Review Training standards / skills and fitness

Ffs horizons our fitness was dogshit last year, takes years to build a proper tank. Will be a year or two yet before we build the size and strength required in the kids. How could you possibly make a bold sweeping statement about workouts unless you have compared the two? You are using performance on field as a measure of what S&C does/is doing. They have literally overhauled the s&c program, will take time to see the results, so actually give it time for a change

Good points. We won’t see any real changes for a few years.

What's most concerning is our inability to hit targets. Carrying one or two with ordinary disposal is one thing, carrying 12 or more is bloody hard to cop. Two blokes combined for nearly 20 turnovers, I mean * hit a target can't blame stagnant players for kicks that miss a target by 15m * I'm angry!

In general you play the way you train.

We are obviously woeful trainers.

It's a pretty small industry.

Posted some info a few years ago via a coach/teacher who worked with AFL club in a specialised area.

It was well known that Richmond (early 2010s) were a slack group always trying to get out of any "extras". Conversely Collingwood had a reputation for being very driven and diligent about every extra thrown their way.

It seems these days we're the Richmond and everyone outside Arden Street knows it.

Could they fast track it by going to Utah?

I think they will get a big uptick into next season. They should be going pretty hard now, they can build during the season. It will lead to some tired on field performance, but given we are struggling no one will know. It's a balancing act trying to build fitness and not impact performance during a season

This may explain the lack of intensity this year and our inability to run out games. All of our players wouldn’t be exposed to it.

I can't see why they wouldn't be doing hard training, weights and endurance type stuff now. They are not making finals and they seriously have a lot of work to do to catch up with other teams. North players look small compared to some opponents. Like most of the Fitzroy guys in their last couple of years.

If losing games now is building players to win next year then go hard. Somewhere the basic skill elements of the game like kicking at goal from 40M and passing to unmarked players also need to be addressed - even if it is only to give the players some small levels of enjoyment of the game.

Fatigue makes cowards of us all. s**t fitness leads to poor execution. Both need work

We arnt even the Richmond atm from what im seeing... we arnt training skills or endurance, as neither have improved, so what are we actually doing on the track?

Nah. Massive increase in risk of injury and game time is always super valuable to execute the game plan, trial talent and practice the intensity that's required at the elite level. Not playing at 100% intensity is such a waste

That would be a very plausible explanation and if it’s actually true I wonder why they wouldn’t just come out and say it?

Once we bulk up we could be, you know, physically intimidating.

Doubt any opposition is scared about some our players coming at them.

Listening to Noble’s many references about ‘standards’ I think he’s well aware of it too. It’s obviously not something you can change overnight so to speak. He’s taken on a hell of a job!
