My observations, I watched about an hour of match sim:

Archer: Didn't do a lot, but he didn't need to, he was lined up against Mahoney who didn't really get near it. Archer had one nice play on the wing, he is moving well.

Bergman: Was playing for the yellows, didn't see much of it, but was at least out there and injury free.

CCJ: Thought Dawson had the better of him early, then he got off the chain slightly, including a 1 v 1 marking win which he slotted from 40.

Comben: Probably had a quieter day than he would have liked, but he is pretty close to a lock for Rnd 1, will take a heap of heat off of Larkey.

Cunners: Was close to BOG in the first quarter. He still can't move to well, but anywhere within 10m of the ball he's just a colossus. Took a few of his trademark overhead marks also, disposal by hand and foot all elite and a demonstration to his team mates how a top class footballer goes about it in possession.

Curtis: Probably my pick for this years breakout player. He's put on a massive amount of muscle for his size/position in one offseason and you can see the Samoan gene's coming through. I think it's pretty telling that Clarko is using him as the extra forward that moves into the center square rotations instead of someone like Zurhaar. He burrowed in, stood up in a tackle, rag dolled the person trying to defend him, to get the first clearance of the game. He then took a hanger 2 mins later. He's going to be a frightening hard matchup both physically and because of his skillset in 3-4 years, he's already bigger and more powerful than most small forwards getting around. Massive ceiling.

Dawson: He's a specimen and I think will be very very handy for the senior side at times during the year.

Drury: He couldn't have done any more or been more impressive. Probably had 15-20 touches off half back in the equivalent of a half of footy. Ran Cooper ragged and honestly treated him with a bit of contempt at times. Disposal over 15-30m is absolutely elite, he's sharp of skills and mind. Clearly has a big footy IQ as his running patterns to give and receive are all of 100+ gamer. He honestly might play more footy than Wardlaw this year, given the latters fitness base atm. Smoky for Rnd 1. I want to see him on some established half forwards in the preseason games.

Edwards: Might have put on some muscle, but was nowhere near it. Needs some pretty rapid improvement for this VFL season. His body size isn't the issue, it's his running patterns, aggressiveness going for the ball etc. He looks very much like a local footballer kid training with an AFL club, not a kid that's been there for 18 months already.

Ford: Took a nice pack mark and goaled. He would be hating what he was seeing from PC and Sheezel though, basically market corrected him.

Free: Hes a bit unco, but he has a bit about him. He beat Goldy in a boundary throw in and then spread which had Monky taking notice. X had the better of him here or there, he's still going to be a very solid addition to the VFL side.

Goater: He's just a specimen that needs 20+ games pumped into him today. His kicking was a little hit and miss, but he did hit an absolutely glorious 50m pass on his left to a leading player out of 50. Absolutely rinsed Comben in a marking contest when he sprung up and spoiled, landed on his feet, recoved and was gone before Comben even knew what had happened. Should be the starting HBF/Wing without a doubt.

Greenwood: Seems to be moving better and was a decent match for Cunners at times.

Cooper H: Probably wants to get home and go to sleep after today. He probably had 1-2 touches to Drury's 15-20. He got an absolute lesson today about the top level. Just because you are a forward, that doesn't make you the most damaging of you and your direct opponent. He sagged off thinking Drury would have to go with him and Drury just continually buried him moving the ball out of defense.

Howe: Rehab group

Larkey: Typical Nick, you know what you are going to get.

Lazzaro: Just don't know where he fits anymore, was lining up on Bailey and Bailey was one of the best on the ground. Better options in almost all of his positions.

Mahoney: See Lazzaro. Except he just didn't get near it much and Archer was patrolling him like a dour defender.

Perez: Was out there, but has some decent competition with Goater and Drury who were both better.

Phillips: Thought he and Simpkin shared the points and both were in the best 4-5 on the ground. Jy probably had slightly more of it, but was a bit diabolical with his footskills at times, where Will was surgical. He's a real point of difference with how well he uses it by foot vs Jy and even LDU. Showed good zip from stoppage but was Boomer like over 30-40m, hitting pretty much every one of his kicks lace out for the game. Will be interesting to see if Clarko starts Cunners or Will as the 3rd midfielder in March. I genuinely think he overtakes Jy in a few seasons, he's just a lot more damaging when he has it.

Powell: Bit more of the Powell of old. Was spreading nicely, got plenty of it up against Jy, Cunners and Shiels. Will be interesting if he starts the year in the AFL or VFL, he will absolutely obliterate the VFL if he has to play that level.

Bailey Scott: Rinsed Laz for most of the game, was all over the ground, close to BOG. Looks to be making strides on even his breakout year last year.

Sheezel: Kicked the opening goal of the game when he cut through 50 and kicked it straight through from 40. He had another 8-9 touches up through the center square and even times in transition at half back, demonstrating his work rate for a half forward. Kicked another point from about 50 after being awarded a holding the ball. Moving nicely and a very nice size for a 1st preseason rookie.

Shiels: Based on today he would be close to playing Rnd 1. He looks a general improvement on Jed to me. Had a ton of it, was directing teammates, was spreading all over the ground. Ball use was good. Will be a valuable 20-22 player imo.

Zurhaar: Got absolutely baked by Shiels and Cunners for burning them in transition. Then had one of the worst turnovers ever at half back that gifted the other side a goal. Zurhaar is a fantastic player on his day, but still an extremely selfish one. Can't see Clarko copping half of what he has gotten away with on field for the last few years.

Lienert will be a very very handy recruit for the VFL side, one we've needed for absolutely ages, he took CCJ, Free and Edwards at different stages.

Thanks for the detailed report.
Can I ask who was taking kick ins from behinds?
Also what did our setup look like when defending kick ins?

Watched training on Wednesday and it’s great to hear about strides made by young guys and optimism about Drury. Geez it’s hard to pick sides for Ones and Twos… here’s a stab and love to see some others.

We don’t have a real idea without being mind readers to know what Alistair and his amigos have planned. Always a great time to think through it. Love the positivity. I watched Wednesday and thought the vibe was up on the last years. Also watched J Gibson working with the backs in 1-2-1 bodying. Thought Gibbo would probably get a game with us 😂😭

I like it my man. I'd personally hope TT doesn't play twos 😅

Oh that's no good, I arrived at the work at 10:30am, the important thing, of course, is my timesheet will state 7:30 am.
I will pack up shortly as the day has flown.
Leave in about 15 minutes just after I fill in 4:00pm on the timesheet

Oh well indeed
How did you get a job working for the Italian Govt?

I like that we have about fifteen million half back flank options and you've chosen to put the only specialised wingman there. Aside from that, I think it's a decent attempt

I'm so confused. The training report mentions Drury as a "speedster". I thought the knock on him was that he was slow?

Backing up all the excellent posting from BF this morning.

He was a free hit, if he works out, so be it if he doesn’t which is looking likely then it doesn’t matter. I had hope he would become a Jackson type player, I hope he has some plan to back up himself post 2023

AFL Pre-season news: Kangaroo Tarryn Thomas to return after developing off-field drama

Kangaroos midfielder Tarryn Thomas is expected to make an appearance at training after being charged over an alleged revenge pr0n threat. But some other big names are still missing.

North Melbourne midfielder Tarryn Thomas is expected to make a return to training next week after taking some time away from the club.
Thomas, 22, missed training on Friday after he was charged this week with a single count of threatening to distribute an intimate image.

He will face Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on March 28 following a police investigation into a dispute and alleged malicious behaviour with an ex-girlfriend.

The Kangaroos will await the outcome of the court appearance before considering further steps but have allowed Thomas to take some leave.

Thomas is one of the Kangaroos’ best young players but endured a tough season in 2022 leading to speculation he could be traded.

But the onballer is keen to recapture his best under new coach Alastair Clarkson this year as part of a bolstered engine room featuring ex-Hawks Liam Shiels and Daniel Howe, recovered hard nut Will Phillips, star Ben Cunnington and Hugh Greenwood.

Jaidyn Stephenson (ill) was also missing from Friday’s session which stamped top rookie draft pick Blake Drury as a Round 1 bolter.

But star onballer Luke Davies-Uniacke trained away from the main group as he deals with an abdomen issue while former Docker Griffin Logue also remains sidelined with a groin injury.

Drury, who was surprisingly overlooked in the national draft, has been moved into a half back running role and was a standout in match simulation at Arden St on Friday.

Drury is highly-rated for his prolific ball-winning, disposal by foot and football smarts, and could force his way into the senior team for the Round 1 clash against West Coast at Marvel Stadium.

Paul Curtis was another to shine on a wing, while Will Phillips is another who will eye a starting Round 1 spot after returning to the engine room on Friday.

Phillips, a No. 3 draft pick, was out with glandular fever last year but was impressive with his clean ball handling on Friday.

Shiels also started in the centre square while forward Cameron Zurhaar came off the ground late in the session after copping a knock.
