Spicer started pre season late and had also been in the rehabilitation group pretty much all pre season. Any idea what the go is there?

People might get their nickers in a knot, but I think we are going to majorly struggle again.

There's still a major amount of basic skill errors from some of our better players, like the previous few years.

LDU looked absolutely miles better than anyone else on the list today coming off 2 months of rehab, whilst that might simply be the case of being an absolute top liner this year, I think it's also an illustration of how some of these guys look good in each others company but aren't close to top level AFL players yet.
Wasn’t there and take your point - thanks for the report - but the fact we had our players spread over two teams might have thinned the pool a little for quality diminishing the skills perhaps?
You’d hope with the top line together that would improve.

Yeah that was my thought. Wasn't super impressive as a whole but a few stand outs. Put them all on the same team against an opposition and it may be a different story.

We will most likely see vs Richmond in the first preseason match. When we got demolished by Melbourne last year, it should have been a sign to know we were going to be in for a long year.
Another year, another premiership contender. Guess that if we wanted a searching pre-season test, to gauge the extent of our improvement, well here it is

Not great news re: skill, was the run and organisation better?

Great write ups all, much appreciated!

Once the team comes together, instead of blue v yellow, I'm sure we'll see general play skills significantly improve.

Add in the players that were absent, we're in a good spot.

I think these coaches can help teach some footy smarts, to our players. It's not always about skills. Decision making is just as important.

Starting to get concerned that we aren't a million miles away from pre-season games and we still have a huge chunk of players who haven't really been doing a lot. Yes, we got given a couple of extra rookies. But we don't have any Cat B's and we're going into the season one down already (George). Time to raise the bar.

Shiels replaced George on the active list

Why do people keep quoting American sports examples? They have absolutely no relevance here whatsoever.
I think the example used is fairly relevant? why did Clarko spend an off season working with Kerr in the NBA if he's coaching footy?

Tigers at Arden st for the nab cup praccy match
I might have read it wrong, but i think it might even be the one organised by the clubs and the afl organised one is still to be announced? could be wrong, im a bit "luvthekangas greatest hits" at the moment.

I am a Giants fan and we won a playoff game this year after being in a similar position to the Roos the past couple of years. It can turn with even an average list with the right game plan and focus.

The Giants totally overhauled their coaching team, hiring a new HC, OC and DC for this season which made all the difference considering the little change in playing personel.

Completely overhauling our coaching team by hiring Clarko and having him bring along Viney, Ratten, Monkhorst and Gibson has a similar sort of feel.

Having said that, I'm not expecting us to win more than ~6 games.

I'm fairly confident in calling Edwards done.

I've seen hours and hours and hours of him now.

It's absolutely nothing to do with his body size. Comben was probably smaller than him 2 seasons ago and showed genuine promise in all facets of his game.

Edwards has no footy IQ in terms of his running patterns, is very timid, doesn't really attack or demand the ball etc. He's a good mover, sure, he's not an absolute freak in that regard like someone like Majak though.

He gets completely out positioned, out bodied and run off by every opponent he has at training. He never gets the ball and he hasn't been a major standout at VFL level either.

I'm normally fairly conservative with these calls, as you normally see a glimpse here or there, he's simply going to be nowhere near good enough. In fact I think he will be back in the Ammo's in 18 months.

He certainly showed enough in those 6-7 games for Sandringham to be taken where he did in the MSD, but he's no different to that player than he is now 20 months down the track.

It would have to be a turnaround of epic proportions imo.

You would be absolutely ropable if you spent a top 15 pick on him at the end of that draft, for that we can be thankful, it didn't cost us anything in draft capital.

I have learnt from McKay, to give a bit of extra time before declaring a player ‘done.’ I hadn’t quite put a line through McKay, but I was pretty close. A lot of posters on here had and lot of the reasons were similar to what you have stated above. He is only a 20 year old kid having his second preseason. He deserves at least 12 months, probably 24 months really before he is classified ‘done.’

Yes but has he got the tank to play it for a whole game at the elite level yet? That’s the problem most of our wingers last year had.

We are not an elite team yet, we’re developing. I understand your point of view though, he needs to be able to run both ways to a satisfactory level. I’m not sure of his running capabilities to be honest. But I do see him playing in that hybrid half back / wing role in the future however.
